This page lists the writer and director for each episode. You will also find listing of each episode a person has been involved with on their own page.
The Supernatural writing team and post-production is based in LA while the show, except for the pilot, is filmed in Vancouver.
Following a large roster of writers in Season One, Supernatural has had a core group of around eight writers each season. Writing on a TV show is not a solo effort - story arcs and individual episodes will be developed and broken in collaboration the writers' room. Eric Kripke, Bob Singer and Sera Gamble in particular have a greater input and influence on the scripts than their individual writing credits indicate. In addition story editors and writers assistants have input as well at different parts of the scripts development. Some writers assistants have gained writing credits on the show including Emily McLaughlin, Jenny Klein and Jackson Stewart. Stunt coordinator Lou Bollo also has two story credits.
The showrunners are involved in both the creative and operational aspects of the show. Veteran Bob Singer was brought on by the studios to work with Eric Kripke when the series began and remains in that position in Season 7. Eric Kripke stepped down as showrunner at the end of Season 5 but has continued to have creative input into the show. Sera Gamble, who began as a writer and story editor with Supernatural in Season 1 was been elevated to showrunner in Season 6.
It is normal practice for TV writers, directors or other crew to be given a producer or executive producer credit as based on their length of tenure or seniority in the production team, although not all of these will actually take on roles more broadly involved in the shows' production.
Some regular writers who have moved on from Supernatural include:
- John Shiban - writer and producer on Legend of the Seeker and Breaking Bad
- Raelle Tucker - writer and producer on True Blood
- Cathryn Humphris - writer and executive story editor on Mad Men
- Jeremy Carver - writer and executive producer on the US version of Being Human. Jeremy left at the end of Season 5, but is returning as Showrunner in Season 8
- Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder - creators and writers of Ringer for the CW
- Eric Kripke - left as showrunner and writer after Season 5, in 2012 his new series Revolution will start on NBC.
- Sera Gamble - left as showrunner and writer after Season 7, developing a new medical drama for ABC.
