History

The Whore of Babylon was a creature from Hell whose name also appears in the Book of Revelation. According to Castiel, it could not leave Hell until Lucifer had broken out of his cage and was walking the Earth.

Some time after Lucifer's release, the Whore rose from Hell and found Leah Gideon in Blue Earth, Minnesota. It killed her and assumed her place, claiming to receive visions from angels of the Apocalypse and began work to damn the town of Blue Earth to Hell.

Characteristics

The Whore of Babylon as depicted in lore.

The Whore of Babylon appears to be a humanoid creature, with it's true face appearing twisted and malformed with white eyes.

This creature's main purpose was to harvest and prepare human souls for Hell. She would go about condemning people to Hell by speaking falsely of prophecy, suggesting that she was the "false prophet" described and mentioned in the Book of Revelation.

Powers and abilities

  • Demonic control – This creature had power over the will of demons and used this to "predict" where battles would occur, thus strengthening the belief in her being a prophet.
  • Enochian spells – The Whore understood the Enochian language and seemed to be semi-fluent in speaking it; she recited a spell that harmed the angel Castiel, and also influenced a small town and taught them a false Enochian exorcism that when translated by Castiel meant "you breed with the mouth of a goat."
  • Invulnerability – As a creature from Hell, very few things were effective against her.
  • Manipulation – This creature was shown to be very manipulative and she, while in human form, almost condemned an entire town to Hell.
  • Shapeshifting – The Whore was capable of taking on a human appearance.
  • Telepathy – It can read human minds.
  • Telekinesis – It is a telekinetic being, which allows it to influence and move objects and people with its mind.

Weaknesses

  • AngelsCastiel was able to briefly restrain the Whore, however he was unable to kill her by conventional angelic means.
  • Crucifix/Cross – The sight of a cross hanging on a mirror caused the Whore to react in anger, briefly showing her true face.
  • Cypress Stake – The Whore can be destroyed by being impaled with a stake or branch of cypress from Babylon by a true servant of Heaven.

Episodes

The Whore of Babylon is killed with a cypress stake from Babylon.

5.17 99 Problems

Sometime after Lucifer was freed from the Cage and began walking the Earth, the Whore of Babylon was released from Hell. Upon arriving on Earth, it found and killed Leah Gideon to assume her form. As Leah, the creature pretended to be speaking to angels, and helping exorcise demons, which were in actuality working in collusion with her.

When Castiel arrived in Blue Earth, Minnesota, he revealed that the Leah Gideon was not a prophet, as all the names of prophets are seared into his brain. He goes on to tell the Winchesters that the Enochian exorcism she had taught the townspeople actually translated to, "You breed with the mouth of a goat." With the Whore's grip on the town becoming more firm, it was able to convince the townspeople of Blue Earth that in order to be among the Chosen who will experience Paradise on Earth, they must follow "the angels' commandments" -- a set of behavior restrictions -- and anyone who broke them was to be killed. This act amongst the town would lead to condemning those who did the killing to Hell. After the death of Paul on Leah's orders, Castiel informs the Sam and Dean that only a true servant of Heaven can kill the Whore, with a stake of cypress from Babylon. It is decided the only worthy person appeared to be Pastor Gideon. When the Whore commands the townspeople to burn the sinners alive, Gideon attempts to stop the creature, but when he fails, Dean completes the act -- suggesting he was close to agreeing to be Michael's vessel.

Whore of Babylon in Lore

Byzantine painting of the Whore of Babylon.

The Whore of Babylon is a figure of evil mentioned in the Book of Revelation, and has close connection to the Antichrist and the Beast of Revelation. Her full title according to the text of the Bible is "Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and Abominations of the Earth", her downfall is described in the Book of Revelation as being killed by a "beast with seven heads and ten horns". Though the Bible describes her as an actual physical manifestation of evil, the term Whore of Babylon has taken on a more allegorical meaning; from the Protestants and Seventh-Day Adventists viewing the Catholic Church to be the Whore, to a traditional Catholic view that a Counter-Catholic Church will rise to deceive believers (some believe to be the Catholic Church post-Vatican II).
