Team Free Will. One ex-blood junkie, one dropout with six bucks to his name, and Mr. Comatose over there. Awesome.

Dean Winchester, 5.13 The Song Remains the Same

After Dean sarcastically named himself, Sam, and Castiel as "Team Free Will," it was quickly picked up through fandom as shorthand for referring to their alliance in stopping the Apocalypse. It has also been adopted to include Bobby, who was mentioned by Castiel as being a figure in stopping Heaven's plans, though he is more of an unofficial member of the team.

Team Free Will

And of course, I remember the most remarkable event. Remarkable because it never came to pass. It was averted by two boys, an old drunk, and a fallen angel. The grand story, and we ripped up the ending, and the rules, and destiny, leaving nothing but freedom and choice.

Castiel, 6.20 The Man Who Would Be King

The concept of "Team Free Will" has persisted and is used again by Dean in a sarcastic manner as they try to find Lucifer's soon-to-be born Nephilim child. He uses it in a pep talk with Castiel before using his free will to get himself a beer.

Team Free Will 2.0: Sam, Dean, Jack, and Cass.

We. You, me, and Sam, we're just better together. So now that you're back, let's go, Team Free Will. Let's get it done.

Dean Winchester, 12.19 The Future

Later, Team Free Will also includes their latest member, Jack Kline. Dean dubs it "Team Free Will 2.0." Subsequent to the events in Apocalypse World, Team Free Will is shown to have begun hunting regular monsters together such as werewolves in 13.23 Let the Good Times Roll and a gorgon in 14.14 Ouroboros, showing that their efforts have expanded beyond their usual world-saving to protecting innocent people from monster attacks.

Alright, well. Two salty hunters, one half-angel kid, a dude that just came back from the dead... again. Team Free Will 2.0, here we go.

Dean Winchester, 13.06 Tombstone

In 15.08 Our Father, Who Aren't in Heaven, Michael, whose derision at the notion of free will inspired the name, becomes an ally of the team in the fight against God.

Billie reveals that Team Free Will 2.0 are the messengers of God's destruction as Death prophesied ten years ago to Dean in Chicago.

Trivia

  • A number of fans use it to indicate they do not have either a character or shipping allegiance and support all main characters.
  • "Team Free Will" is also used sometimes to describe fanfics which feature Dean, Sam, and Castiel in a sexual relationship although this is most commonly known as Wincestiel. See Dean/Sam/Castiel.
  • Of Team Free Will's official members, both the original team and 2.0, only Sam has not killed an archangel. Similarly, Sam and Dean exclusively wiped out two generations of demons. Sam led the White-eyed Demons to extinction and Dean killed the last of the Knights of Hell.
