Clarification requested: What does this sentence mean?

Even though initially timidly introduced and confronted with ideas of masculinity and heroism, "slash" gained a wider audience over the years.

Slash was confronted with ideas of masculinity and heroism? By whom? For what purpose? To what effect?

Also,

Much has been said about why fans (the majority of them women) write slash fiction, and it always stands in relation to the concept of slash fiction itself.

I think I understand what this is attempting to say, but not sure. To rephrase without changing the meaning of the sentence: "Much of what has been said about why fans write slash always stands in relation to the concept of slash." That seems rather redundant? Could this be rewritten for clarity?

Early slash fiction in the 70s struggled with traditional perception of masculinity and heroism - e.g. it was perceived as a discrepancy even by writers themselves, to see men both with female and male characteristics. Writers had to find a way to incorporated their ideas into the beliefs they had been brought up with - or even forget what they had been taught and create new perspectives of masculinity.

Several things; 1) is this the right place to mention the top/bottom convention in labeling? (eg. how Sam/Dean is different from Dean/Sam) For that matter, does this fandom even follow this convention in labeling much? And 2) Despite the fact that incest is endemic to this fandom, I've seen complaints that this is a rather un-kinky fandom (aside from that), so I'm not sure if calling the SPN fandom eager to explore every corner of sexuality is quite accurate. (for example, there seems to be a marked lack of necro, especially considering that everybody dies at least once.) IsaacSapphire 20:54, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Please do not remove the term Queer from the Wiki. It is an umbrella term for people who identify as sexuality or gender diverse or as an alternative term to GLBTIQ and not a slur. Missyjack / Super Wiki Admin
