• Ghost Whisperer: TV series starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. She talks to dead people.

Dean: Dude, I full on Swayze'd that mother!

• Ghost: Chick flick starring Demi Moore and a lump of wet clay and Patrick Swayze. The lump of wet clay is quite good. Swayze is dead and tries to communicate with his girlfriend through medium Whoopi Goldberg.

2.02 Everybody Loves a Clown

Jo: You know, I thought you were gonna toss me some cheap pickup line. Most hunters come through that door think they can get in my pants with some... pizza, a six pack, and side one of Zeppelin IV.

• Fast Times at Ridgemont High: Mike Damone, a character in this 1982 movie, claims to be an expert on women, recommends in his five point plan that, "When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV." Though referred to as Zeppelin IV, Led Zeppelin's fourth album is technically untitled.

Dean: You didn't think I'd remember, did you? I mean, come on, you still bust out crying whenever you see Ronald McDonald on the television.

• McDonalds: Ronald McDonald is the clown-like mascot for the fast-food restaurant chain.

Dean: (to Sam): I know what you're thinking - why'd it have to be clowns?

• Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark: A shout out to Indy's line Why'd it have to be snakes? Kripke, can Dean have a whip please?

Ash: I'll be on it like Divine on dog dookie.

• Pink Flamingo: Divine ate dog poo in this John Waters classic. Ah, they just don't make movies like this anymore.

2.03 Bloodlust

• Silence of the Lambs: 1991 movie based on the novel by Thomas Harris. Creepy and quotable in equal parts.

• Lost Boys: 1992 movie featuring teen slacker vamps pre-Buffy and Kiefer Sutherland before he started saving the world 24 hours at a time.

Gordon: How to kill them. Now seriously, bro. That knife's making me itch. Whoa. Easy there, Chachi.

• Happy Days: Chachi was a character on the sitcom about idealized life in the 50s and 60s.

Lenore: If we can change, they can change.

• Rocky IV: Rocky Balboa has a similar line, “If I can change, and you can change, everybody can change.”

2.04 Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things

• Fletch: Alan Stanwick is the lead character's name in this comedy action movie about an investigator who investigates and gets the girl and the money in the end.

Dean (on walking in while Sam is watching porn): Awkward.

• Casa Erotica Four: Despite extensive research I couldn't find this movie. However it comes from the genre of Latina lesbian porn.

Dean: Haven't you seen Pet Semetary?

• Pet Semetary: A Stephen King classic proving both pets and people should stay dead. Followed by a movie that, again, failed to be anywhere near as creepy as the book.

Sam: You've been watching too many Romero flicks.

• Night of the Living Dead (followed by sequels and remakes and remakes of sequels): The quintessential zombie movies. The original Night of the Living Dead opened in 1968. Under all the brain eating, there was a pointed critique on 60s America.

Dean: Maybe he's out renting Beaches.

• Beaches: 1988 chick flick starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. And yeah maybe I bawled when I saw it but if you tell anyone I'll have to kill you.

Dean (reading Angela's journal): It's got unrequited Ducky love written all over it.

• Pretty in Pink: 1986 brat pack, teen chick flick with big hair.

Angela: Hi honey, I’m home!

• I Love Lucy: Similar line to the 1950’s sitcom where Desi Arnaz’s character would say “Lucy! I’m home!”

• Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope: A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away there was a really great movie. Six movies later - not so much.

Dean: Well, it looks like he can't work his mojo just by twitching his nose, he's gotta use verbal commands.

• Bewitched: TV series about a witch who had to twitch her nose to perform magic. Second time Dean has reference this TV show, he must have really liked it, as he references it later in 7.05 Shut Up, Dr. Phil.

2.06 No Exit

• Ghostbusters: The Sumerian god Gozer manifests in as the fictional corporate mascot Stay Puft Marshmallow Man at the climax of Ghostbusters.

2.07 The Usual Suspects

• The X-Files: Mulder and Scully were one of the greatest examples of Unresolved Sexual Tension on TV. Well, except until it wasn’t unresolved anymore. So why exactly is Dean comparing him and Sam to Mulder and Scully??

Dean (referring to the repetition of the word DANASHULPS): I dunno, but it's everywhere. Well, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

• The Shining: When Jack Nicholson’s character is going mad in the movie, he types out repeatedly “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

Dean: I'm not joking, Ponch.

• CHiPS: This is a shout out to Erik Estrada's character motocycle cop Officer Frank "Ponch" Poncherello of the California Highway Patrol on the 70s series CHiPS, probably the first Latino main character, and sex symbol, on TV since Ricky Ricardo in the 1950s.

Dean: Hey, thanks for the law review, Matlock. But. If you want to help me... I need you to see my brother.

• The Great Escape: 1963 movie set in a prison camp in World War 2, where the Germans put prisoners who have escaped from other camps. Star studded cast led by Steve McQueen, this escape makes Prison Break look like a picnic.

Dean: You know, sometimes the spirits, they, they get things jumbled. You remember "REDRUM". Same concept. You know, it's, uh, maybe word fragments... other times, it's anagrams.

• The Shining: The little boy writes the word Redrum on a mirror. REDRUM backwards is murder!

Dean: You know, Casper the bloodthirsty ghost?

• Casper: Cartoon ghost, more schmoop than psycho.

Dean: Go to the first motel listed in the yellow pages. Look for Jim Rockford - it's how we find each other when we're separated.

• The Rockford Files: 70s TV series about a private detective called Jim Rockford. He was the opposite of most 70s cop/PIs – not suave, lived in a trailer, didn’t always get the baddie, didn’t get into gunfights much and hung out with his dad (Rocky) all the time.

2.08 Crossroad Blues

• Public Enemies: John Dillinger's exploits and law enforcement's efforts to catch him were the subject of the 2009 movie.

Dean: Great. So we've gotta clean up these peoples' mess for 'em? I mean, they're not exactly squeaky clean. Nobody put a gun to their head and forced 'em to play Let's Make A Deal.

• Let's Make A Deal: TV game show that started in the 60s.

Dean: George Darrow. Apparently quite the regular at Lloyd's. Though this house probably ain't up next on MTV Cribs, is it?

• MTV Cribs: Reality TV show that takes tours of celebrity mansions.

Dean: Wasn't for cash. Oh, who knows. Maybe this place is full of babes in Princess Leia bikinis.

• Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi: While trying to rescue Han. Leia is captured by the corpulent Jabba the Hut. He keeps her as his slave girl (read sexy dancing whore) and dresses her in a fetching bikini ensemble, and keeps her on a chain.

Dean (to crossroads demon): You think you could throw in a set of steak knives?

• Late night TV infomercials: Late at night ads become programs as washed up celebrities sell us things to flatten our abs, smooth out our wrinkles and slice vegetables into pretty shapes. To sweeten the deal as you sign up to pay $69.95 in ten easy installments, sometimes they throw in some extra cutlery.

2.09 Croatoan

Dean: Yeah! Shots heard 'round the world, How bills becomes laws...
Sam: That's not school, that's Schoolhouse Rock.

• Schoolhouse Rock: Series of 46 educational short films featuring songs about schoolhouse topics.

Dean: That was kind of creepy, right? A little too Stepford?

• The Stepford Wives: A book by Ira Levin (who also wrote Rosemary’s Baby) made into a 1975 movie. At a time when feminism was starting to have real effects in women’s lives, in the town of Stepford, men are replacing their wives with perfectly behaving robots. While the original was quite chilling, the 2004 remake with Nicole Kidman was played for laughs.

Dean: You've got a neighbor named Mr. Rogers?

• Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood: Starting in 1962 and running for nearly forty years, Mister Roger’s Neighborhood, featured Mr. Rogers talking directly to the audience about various issues, and doing all the other things that happen on kids TV. It also featured a puppet show set in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe.

Dean: Man, I don't know, I feel like Chuck Heston in the Omega Man.

• The Omega Man: 1971 Post apocalyptic movie in which Chuck Heston’s character is one of the few people not killed or infected by a plague which turns people into violent, light-sensitive albinos.

Dean: Yeah, good point. Night of the Living Dead didn't exactly end pretty.

• Night of the Living Dead: is a zombie film directed by George A. Romero. It is known for having a nihilistic ending.

Sam: All right, then we should keep him tied up, and we should wait and see.
Dean: For what? For him to Hulk out and infect somebody else? No thanks, can't take that chance.

• The Incredible Hulk: TV show and various movies starring a scientist, Bruce Banner, who transforms into the strong and almost unstoppable green monster, the Hulk, whenever he becomes angry or panicked.

Dean: ...or we could go to Hollywood and see if we can bang Lindsay Lohan.

• Lindsay Lohan: Skanky ho with the sorta talents that end you up on the cover of tabloids. Note that Dean is suggesting both he and Sam bang her. Neither of them should touch her with a ten foot pole. Boys, keep those ten foot poles in your pants. Sam and Dean do make it to Hollywood in 2.18 Hollywood Babylon but don’t meet Lohan.

2.10 Hunted

• Star Wars: ‘To go dark side’ is a reference that means to become evil.

Sam: These are .223 Caliber, subsonic rounds, the guy must've put a suppressor on the rifle.
Ava: Dude, who are you?
Sam: I ah...I just I...I just watch a lot of TJ Hooker.

• T.J. Hooker: 1980s cop show starring the inimitable William Shatner. Sam may have also been watching for the blond hair talent of Heather Locklear.

Gordon: Besides Mr. Tinkles the cat, no.

• Mr.Tinkles: starred in the 2001 movie Cats and Dogs about, well, rival cats and dogs.

2.11 Playthings

Dean: Old school haunted houses, you know? Fog and secret passageways, sissy British accents. Might even run into Fred and Daphne while we're inside. Mmm. Daphne. Love her.

• Scooby Doo: A long running cartoon series about four friends and a dog called Scooby Doo who hunt down ghosts and the supernatural. Daphne was a sexy red-head.

Dean: You know, there's a really good hangover remedy, it's a greasy pork sandwich served up in a dirty ashtray.

• Weird Science: This is a line from Chet in the 80’s movie John Hughes’ movie. Evidence Dean is a fan of his work, after his previous mention of Pretty in Pink in 2.04 Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things.

2.12 Nightshifter

Ronald (holding up a magazine): Chinese have been working on 'em for years. And the Russians before that. Part men, part machine; like the Terminator. But the kind that can change itself, make itself look like other people.
Dean: Like the one from T2.

• Terminator movies: A series of movies (the first two directed by James Cameron) about the threat to humanity of intelligent machines. In the first movie body builder and politician Arnold Schwzanegger is a cyborg known as Terminator sent to kill a future rebel leader. In the second movie, known as T2, the Terminator, played by Robert Patrick (of X-Files fame) is a T-1000 model which can assume the shape of objects or people it touches.
• Fortean Times: The magazine cover features a picture of a Cyberman, long-time enemy of the British television character Doctor Who.

Dean (to Sam): I don’t think he likes you very much, Agent Johnson.

• The Matrix Reloaded: Agent Johnson was an upgraded agent of the Matrix in the second installment of The Matrix series, written and directed by the Wachowski brothers.

When Sam and Dean present their fake FBI badges for Ronald to inspect, Sam's badge reads "Han Solo", and Dean's reads "Jack Ryan."

• Han Solo: Character played by Harrison Ford in the Star Wars films.
• Jack Ryan: Fictional CIA officer created by writer Tom Clancy. Harrison Ford also played Jack Ryan in Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994).

2.13 Houses of the Holy

• Cocoa Puffs: "I'm cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs!" is one of the taglines used in commercials for the breakfast cereal.

Dean: But she seriously believes she was touched by an angel?

Dean: Yep. Roma Downey made him do it.

• Touched By an Angel: A 1990s TV series starring Roma Downey as an angel helping people at difficult times in their life. And no she didn’t touch anyone in that way.

Dean: Look, I'll admit I'm a bit of a skeptic, but since when are you all Mr. 700 Club?

• 700 Club: News show on the Christian Broadcasting Network featuring women with big hair and the men with scary smiles.

Dean: It's just a spirit, Sam. Okay? And it's not the first one to be able to read people's minds. Okay, let me guess. You were personally chosen to smite some sinner. You've just got to wait for some divine Bat-signal, is that it?

• Bat-signal: In the Batman movies, the Gotham City Police Department uses it as a method of contacting and summoning Batman.

Dean: Yeah. Yeah, we just need a few odds and ends, and that séance ritual in Dad's journal.
Sam: Oh, a séance, great. Hope Whoopi's available.

• Ghost: Whoopi Goldberg played the medium in this 1990 film. Because dead Patrick Swayze communicates with Demi Moore through Whoopi, there is some nice lesbian subtext which I am sure Dean enjoyed.

Sam: Dude, all right, I'll admit, we've gone pretty ghetto with spell work before, but this takes the cake! I mean - a SpongeBob placemat instead of an altar cloth?
Dean: We'll just put it SpongeBob-side down

• SpongeBob SquarePants: Stars in the eponymous cartoon series where he lives in a pineapple under the sea with his friend Patrick the Starfish. Metallica released a T-shirt featuring cartoon versions of themselves playing live with SpongeBob and Patrick which would have given them street cred in Dean’s eyes.

2.14 Born Under a Bad Sign

• Justin Timberlake: Renaissance man who is quite the triple threat e.g. sings, dances, acts. The phrase originated in football where it refers to a player who excels at running, passing, and kicking.

• E.T.: Huge schmaltzy 1982 Spielberg movie featuring a stranded, cute alien and an even cuter seven year old Drew Barrymore. The alien had a long finger that glowed.

Dean: That's right where the frat boy had his close encounter.

• Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Another Spielberg movie about aliens who come to Earth.

2.16 Roadkill

• The Wizard of Oz: Dorothy Baum and her friends follow a yellow brick road to reach the Wizard.

Dean: Sammy's always getting a little J. Love Hewitt when it comes to this.

• The Ghost Whisperer: TV series starring Jennifer Love Hewitt as Melinda Gordon who is always having ghosts chat to her.

Dean: Well all right, Haley Joel.

• Haley Joel Osment: Saw dead people in The Sixth Sense. Not seen much since.

Molly: So this is really what you guys do. You're like Ghostbusters.

• Ghostbusters: 1984 comedy about dudes who catch supernatural entities. A reboot, starring 4 dudettes is due to be released in July 2016.

• Incredible Hulk: In this comic, TV series and movies a mild mannered scientist gets really big (and green) when he’d get angry.

Dean: I'd say Kurt's looking more and more like our Cujo.

• Cujo: A Stephen King book and later movie about a rabid St. Bernard called Cujo that drools a lot.

Sam: Wait, so Kendall married Ethan's father just to get back at him?
Madison: Yep and now she's set to inherit all the casinos that were supposed to go to Ethan.

• All My Children: Soap Opera which has run since 1970 and covered most of the soap staples including the usual sexual shennigans, OMG you’re my mother/father/sister, OMG you’ve got <insert disease>, OMG x killed y, OMG you’re gay and OMG this TV show ran for 41years!

Dean: What are you, the Dog Whisperer now?

• Dog Whisperer with Cesar Milan: Reality show about how Cesar trained humans to train their dogs.

2.18 Hollywood Babylon

Dean: You know this is where they filmed Creepshow?

• Creepshow: 1982 movie consisting of a series of short films. Directed by George Romero of zombie flick fame, and written by Stephen King, how could Dean not love it!

Tour Guide: To the right here is Stars Hollow, which is the setting for the television series Gilmore Girls.

• Gilmore Girls: Notably neither of The Boys own up to watching this TV series which ran from 2000-07 in which Jared Padalecki starred as Dean Forester for 65 episodes.
  

Dean: Tara Benchley? From feardotcom and Ghost Ship Tara Benchley? Dude why didn’t you say so?

• Feardotcom: Horror movie where people die after logging onto a website. Many people who saw it died from boredom.
• Ghost Ship: 2002 horror flick based on the real sinking of the SS Andrea Doria. Features Australian actor Alex Dimitriades which may be of interest to no one but me. Like feardotcom, did not star Tara Benchley.

Dean: Oh, like Poltergeist?
Sam: It could be a poltergeist.
Dean: No, no, no. Like the movie, Poltergeist. (pause)You know nothing of your cultural heritage, do you?

• Poltergeist: 1982 movie about an evil spirit that lives in a TV. (Notably, neither Sam nor Dean know that their heritage makes them legacies in the Men of Letters).

• Poltergeist: The Legacy: TV show that ran from 1996-99, about members of a secret society that protect humankind from ghosts, spirits, evil forces and other baddies by investigating reports of suspicious deaths, fighting said baddies, collecting knowledge and artifacts and putting them in a fortified castle-like building. They had member houses all over the world, including London, England. There was even an episode where a wrestler collects souls, similar to 11.15 Beyond the Mat. Anyone else see a resemblance to the bunker and the Men of Letters? No? Just me then. Ok.

Dean: Sam, check it out, it's Matt Damon.
Sam: Yeah, pretty sure that's not Matt Damon.
Dean: No, it is.
Sam: Well Matt Damon just picked up a broom and started sweeping.

• Matt Damon: Rose to fame in Good Will Hunting he wrote, and starred in with mate Ben Affleck. Since then he was developed a penchant for series with the Bourne and Ocean's (11, 12, 13) movies.

Dean (to Tara Benchley): You I know it’s really uncool to say this but I’m a big fan. I loved you in Boogeyman.
Tara (laughs): Yeah, what a terrible script. But thank you.

• Boogeyman: Written by Eric Kripke, this is a much underrated example of the horror genre. Okay, not so much. It’s not bad – but it’s no Supernatural. Also, did not star Tara Benchley.

Dean (to Gerard St James): You were Desert Soldier Number Four in Metal Storm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn. I knew I recognized you. I am a huge fan. I mean – your turn as a tractor crash victim in Critters 3? Wow.
Dean: Hey I wanted to ask you – what was it like working with Richard Moll in Metal Storm? He was Herok, King of the Cyclops people.

• Metal Storm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn: Can’t say I’ve seen this 1983 sci-fi flick. Did anyone? Maybe Dean watched it for Kelly Preston?
• Critters 3: The third in this series about furry, snarky, mean critters.
• Richard Mole: Had a role in The Christmas Cottage which Jared starred in.

Dean: It's like Three Men and a Baby all over again.

• Three Men and a Baby: American remake of a French comedy about three bachelors raising a baby. The urban legend associated with the film says that the ghost of a boy who killed himself during filming can be seen in one scene.

Dean: Come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs...

• Die Hard: First in a series of action movies starring Bruce Willis as New York detective John McLane who has a crappy marriage and a lot of witty one liners.

2.19 Folsom Prison Blues

Dean (mugging for the police photographer): I call this one my Blue Steel…Who looks better – me or Nick Nolte?”

• Blue Steel: was the name of a modeling pose belonging to the really, really, ridiculously handsome Derek Zoolander in the movie Zoolander.
• Nick Nolte: was arrested in 2002 for drunk driving; his mug shot showed him with wild hair and wearing a Hawaiian shirt.

Lucas: You talking to me? You talking to me?
Dean: Okay, another guy who’s seen Taxi Driver one too many times.

• Taxi Driver: “You talking to me” is a much quoted line from Robert De Niro’s character Travis Bickel in Taxi Driver – usually by people who have never seen this dark 1976 Scorsese movie.

Dean: I wish I had a baseball. You know, like Steve McQueen.

• The Great Escape: 1963 WW2 prison camp escape movie with catchy theme music based on an actual escape from Stalag Luft III, where the Germens sent Allied POWs who had escaped from other camps. When sent to solitary Steve McQueen’s character Hilts bounces a baseball against the wall.

Dean: That’s the Sammy I know. You’re like Clint Eastwood from Escape from Alcatraz.

• Escape from Alcatraz: Clint Eastwood stars as Frank Morris who escapes from Alcatraz prison. Based on real events, it portrayed something close to the real conditions in the prison.

Dean: It’s a good thing I’m like James Garner from The Great Escape.

• The Great Escape: James Garner’s character, Hendley, is the scrounger who ingeniously gets all the items needed for the escape.

Randall (to Sam): She did this Charles Bronson thing with a hypodermic.

• Death Wish: A reference to the vigilante role of Charles Bronson who kills criminals after his family is attacked. You can probably tell from the title it’s not a romantic comedy.

Sam: Thought we were screwed before?
Dean: Hell yeah, I know. We gotta go deep this time.
Sam: Deep, Dean? We should go to Yemen.
Dean: Not sure I’m ready to go that deep.

• Friends: Comedy which ran from 1994-2004 about a group of yuppie 20-somethings in New York who drank a lot of coffee. In episode 4.15 of Friends, The One With All The Rugby, Chandler pretends his company is transferring him to Yemen in order to avoid a scary ex-girlfriend.

Dean: My god, Barbara Eden was hot, wasn’t she? And way hotter then that Bewitched chick.

• I Dream of Jeannie: Barbara Eden played a genie in the 60's TV series who lived with Major Tony Nelson, an astronaut she (innocently?) referred to as Master. While she wore a sexy harem outfit, standards at the time prohibited her showing her belly button.
• Bewitched: Elizabeth Montgomery starred as Samantha, a witch with a twitchy nose in this 60s TV series. A housewife and mother, she was less sexualized than Jeannie.

Dean and Carmen apparently fell asleep to (or they had better things to do) with the TV on which showed:

• From Hell It Came: Campy 1957 movie about a tree-like resurrected man who exacts revenge and is killed via a bullet pushing an already stabbed knife into his chest. Yeah, it is a bad as it sounds.
• ThunderCats: An 80's cartoon about a group of cat-like warriors from Thundera who battle evil mutants on a foreign planet. Also Sam is seen watching ThunderCats during Dean’s first childhood flashback in 1.18 Something Wicked. In 14.04 Mint Condition Sam finds a case that involves a possibly-possessed ThunderCats figure that Dean is excited to investigate.

Sam: Where are we?
Dean: Well, we're not in Kansas anymore.
And
Dean: Auntie Em? There's no place like home.

• The Wizard of Oz: When Dorothy wakes up in Oz she notes that she is no longer in Kansas. When she returns she says “There’s no place like home”. The Boys do meet Dorothy Baum and The Wicked Witch of the West in 9.04 Slumber Party.

2.21 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One

Andy: Yeah... D. Hasselhoff?

• David Hasselhoff: Dean signed the receipt D. Hasselhoff, who was the star of the series Baywatch. Sam and, definitely, Dean watched for Pamela Anderson in her little red swimsuit. David Hasselhoff also starred in the TV series Knight Rider in which he fought baddies while driving a kick-ass, nearly indestructible, black car. Sound familiar?

2.22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two

• Jean-Claude Van Damme: Kick-boxing champion turned action movie star.

• Star Wars: Jedis can use The Force for mind control.
