January 9: Premier of My Bloody Valentine 3D
The premier of My Bloody Valentine 3D in LA kicks off a round of publicity interviews for Jensen with the likes of Jimmy Kimmel and Chelsea Lately.

Jared talked about going to see the movie in Vancouver with Jensen, Danneel and Kerr Smith.

iF: It’s ironic that both you and Jensen Ackles have two horror movies out at the same time.

Jared: It is exciting. His movie being called MY BLOODY VALENTINE, and my movie coming out February 13, when we found that we were like, “Oh dude, I hope they don’t come out on the same day.” It’s nice. It’s rare for us to have a day off, and we both had that Friday off [when his movie came out]. His girl and he were going on a date, and I was like “no, we’re seeing your movie.” We put little goggles on and snuck in after the movie started. Kerr Smith, who is also in the movie, he was in town shooting a pilot. So the four us, Kerr and Jensen’s girl saw the movie and we were joking afterwards, the guy behind us must have been going “these goggles are amazing, they’re right there.” Jared talked about going to see the movie with Jensen, Danneel and Kerr Smith in Vancouver.

January 14: Interview with Jensen where he talks about kissing and his career:

Q: You came to L.A. right out of high school to become an actor. What have you learned along the way?

Jensen: I was so young, an 18-year-old wide-eyed teenager from Texas who didn't really have his ways set yet. Since then I've learned that Hollywood is not a corporate ladder that you can climb to the top. It's such an unpredictable business that you've just got to keep pressing and stay focused. I'm a roll-with-the-punches kind of guy but feel like I'm making progress.

But most cracky is mighty Jensen and his SPIDER KILLING activities (shhh Jared don't tell PETA).

Ackles recounts, "Just the other night, when I was getting into bed, I picked up the sheet and slid my legs underneath and as I was about to put the sheet back down on my chest, a spider suddenly dropped down from inside the sheet, right next to me on the mattress and I was just like, 'What?' I got it with my hand, put it on the floor, and then stepped on it. I don't like them, but they don't frighten me. If that would have been anybody else I know, it would have been 'WAHHHH!' What's amazing is if you think about how many spiders you don't see. That's more scary to me than actually seeing one, because if I see one then I know where it is and I can take care of it, but it's all the ones I don't see that can kind of mess with my head."

Kim Manners dies from lung cancer. He had been ill since mid 2008. The last episode of Supernatural he directed was 4.04 Metamorphosis.

Eric Kripke said of Kim:

Everyone at Supernatural is walking around in a daze, shocked and absolutely devastated. Kim was a brilliant director; more than that, he was a mentor and friend. He was one of the patriarchs of the family, and we miss him desperately. He gave so much to Supernatural, and everything we do on the show, now and forever, is in memory of him.

Both Jared and Jensen often quoted Kim's philosophy on work “We spend way too much time with each other not to enjoy each others' company.”

There are number of tributes to Kim in episodes for the rest of the season including a slide montage at the end of 4.15 Death Takes a Holiday dedicating the season to him. In 4.19 Jump the Shark a display card in the room advertises happy hour at the Sonny Buono lounge and features a pic of a mustached Kim Manners. There were also upside down "KM" carved into the wooden paddle parts of the room divider in the motel room. At the Salute to Supernatural L.A. 2009, Jensen and Jared mentioned that in honour of Kim the crew had undertaken a mustache growing competition. In 5.10 Abandon All Hope..., Ellen's parting words to dean are "Kick it in the ass" - a deliberate use according to Sam Ferris, of Kim Manner's signature line.

Feb 8: Friday the 13th premiere
Jared starts pimping F13th around the country including at Comic Con gig in NY and an interview with Bonnie Hunt. Genevieve Cortese, Danneel Harris and Steve Carlson were in attendance.

In another interview, when asked whether he ever he Googled himself, Jared said:

When I started playing Dean on Gilmore Girls, I had long hair and then they cut it. That's when I found out about how people talk about you on the Internet. I went online and someone was like, 'Dean got his hair cut and he looks cute.' The next person was like, 'He looks like an idiot. It's ugly.' And I was like, 'That's kind of mean. Why would somebody say that?' I just don't think people should say hurtful things about you on the Internet. So I don't go there much anymore.

We live together in Vancouver. We live in a house. We’re just actually good buddies. It’s not like, “Hey, you play brothers on screen. As soon as they call ‘Cut,’ you’re, like, fighting each other.” It’s like, he’s a Texas boy, and our girlfriends get along famously. Like, “Fine, go enjoy. We’re going to be watching the Super Bowl and grilling steaks; you go talk about girl stuff.” It’s fun. It’s like having a brother, it really is. So I’m really excited for him when stuff happens; he’s really excited for me, and ultimately, the better each of us does, really the better it helps both of us. The better his movie does, the more it helps me. The better my movie does, the more it helps him. And so it’s really nice to have a buddy who’s really after you to do your best.

and the grueling shooting schedule that keeps him from seeing friends:

Literally, we start like July 1st. Usually I’ll be in LA, like, June 26th. I’ll plan to leave up to Vancouver, drive up there with my dogs, and so I’ll have a dinner June 25th. Last year, I took my buddies to Mortons. I was like, “Listen, I’m going to buy us some steak,” and I’d sit down with them, my closest friends, and I’m like, “All right, guys. See you in April.” [Laughs] It happens like that, and then it’s like text messages and kind of odd phone calls, but I don’t get to see anybody.

and some Surprise JDM! (I assume the tragedy he is referring to was Kim's death, along with that of two crew members who also died in early 2009.)

IH: Jeff Morgan raved you up. I just talked to him for Watchman, and he thought you and Jensen were really great, and he said they’re not the assholes...

JP: [Laughs] Ah! That you think they are… I love Jeff Morgan. I actually talked to him the other day. There’s a tragedy going on in the Supernatural family...And so he called just to check up on me, talk about everything, see how everything was going, make sure I’m all right... we chatted for a little bit, and I have the utmost respect for that guy. First of all, I love him. He’s a great dude, he’s funny, he’s talented, he’s nice to be around, he’s real supportive and likes to have a good time, and I’m just really proud of him. He’s been working his ass off for a long time and he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves. But I wish I saw more of him. I wish he’d come to Supernatural as soon as the show ends, or if he can come and make it back up, we’ll have a lot more opportunity to hang out. But I’ve seen my brother twice a year, so the people I care about I don’t really get a whole lot of opportunities to see. You kind of have to force-feed visits and stuff like that. But I’m really proud of Jeff. He deserves everything that he gets.

February 24: Jensen is featured in an interview in Venice Magazine. Great interview where he is geeky about film and passionate about Supernatural. Pics here

During the interview, when asked about he and Jared both having movies out, Jensen actually scrolls though his phone to find a message Jared sent him on the night of the MBV premiere which he reads out to the journalist: "Hey dude, thinking about you. Hope it's going well. Kick ass. Enjoy."

and from the Tao of Jensen Ackles: "If something bad happens, I cross that bridge when i come to it, whether it's a broken bridge or a golden bridge."

February 25: Supernatural is renewed for a fifth season.

March 6-8: Salute to Supernatural New Jersey 2009
Notable as Misha's first Con, there was little hint of the playfulness (ahem - madness!) we were to come to know from him later. Misha did say that Castiel probably wants to retire to a country house with Sam and Dean. Someone said, "Not together!" And Misha said: "Well, you don't know how Castiel thinks."

First con also for Traci Dinwiddie who revealed that "Jensen's really shy, but Jared brings him out, it's kinda sweet".

March 12: In a TV Guide interview we learn a bit more about Misha...

TVGuide.com: How was your first Supernatural convention experience this past weekend?
Misha Collins: It was good. I don't feel nearly as traumatized as I expected. I feel like a little bit of a whore, so that's a triumph in my book.
TVGuide.com:"In the wake of [producer-director] Kim Manners' death, did the tone on set change for the long term, or did people realize that this is what he loved and continued to do their best to honor him?"
Collins: I only did one episode with Kim, but it was amazing to see the effect he had on the crew. His leadership up in Vancouver very much affected the dynamic of how this crew operates. He lived in a hotel up here, and all the staff came to his memorial — the doorman, the housekeeper.... That's the kind of guy he was.
TVGuide.com: And lastly, "In CSI , 24 and Seven Days, your accent was unbelievably believable. How did you manage that?"
Collins: When I was in high school, I liked to pretend that I was a Russian foreign exchange student. I would do things like go into a pizza restaurant and tell them I'd never had pizza before, and they'd bring me into the kitchen and show me how to make an American pizza. It's really fun. People relate to you totally differently, and show you a side to themselves that you never see in your regular voice. So I guess the short answer is just "By fucking around."

March 27-29 Salute to Supernatural L.A. 2009

At which Jared gets obsessed with a baby, Jensen danced and Misha talked crack about his pet turtles. Oh and glee as Aldis Hodge made a surprise appearance. Jensen and Jared also mentioned that in honour of Kim Manners the crew had undertaken a mustache growing competition.

April 3: Scary. Sexy. Supernatural.
Entertainment Weekly magazine does a four page spread on Supernatural in on the eve of 4.18 The Monster at the End of This Book.

The article talks about the rising popularity of the Show, and Kripke's intention to only do 5 seasons, and the boys' agreement with that. Jensen says:

"We don't live at home. We don't sleep in our own beds. Our families aren't here. Our friends aren't here. Out girlfriends aren't here," Jensen Ackles says of the Vancouver-shot series. "To do it for another five years ... I don't know if I could handle it."

In the digital version of the article, Kripke talks about the introduction of the angels, and his 5 year story arc. Jensen mentions to nod to fans in and, in relation to the "they sure do complain a lot line" says "I'm a fan of the show, and I get gripey," the actor says later in his trailer. "Where is [Kripke] going with this? What is happening? Angels and demons? Come on, man!... Then I'll read the next script and it's like, 'Oh, I kinda like that'."

In this article, and a couple of other interviews around the end of the season Kripke emphasised that his story arc only went for 5 seasons, and both Jensen and Jared were less than positive about the idea of continuing after 5 years:

"We don't live at home. We don't sleep in our own beds. Our families aren't here. Our friends aren't here. Our girlfriends aren't here," says Ackles. "To do it for another five years, or whatever, I don't know if I could handle it." Padalecki concurs: "I enjoy working, but what's the point? Do I want to just keep on doing photo shoots and work so I can get more famous so I can do even more photo shoots and work and fly to more places to do more press?... I get sick of talking about myself."

April 4: THE CW’S “SUPERNATURAL” BEATS THE DEVIL The CW announces that 4.18 The Monster at the End of This Book achieved the highest rating ever.

The CW’s SUPERNATURAL delivered its best adults 18-34 (1.7/5) in nearly two and a half years (since Oct. 2006) and matched its best men 18-34 (1.9/6) EVER on The CW, despite facing the “E.R.” finale on NBC, according to preliminary live plus same day Nielsen ratings for Thursday, April 2, 2009. This was also SUPERNATURAL’s best women 18-34 (1.5/4) and adults 18-49 (1.6/4) in nearly two months (since 1/29/09).

April 7:
Jason Manns reveals that Jensen and Jared spent the weekend golfing in Oregon.

April 16:
A blog documents Jared and Jensen's food preferences. And also asserts that they share a mortgage (and that she "fact checked" this).

Favourite Texas eateries: “I could pretty much eat there (Mi Cocina) breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” Ackles says. “You’ve got to get the nachos -- a mix of chicken and the steak.”

“Really, the food that I miss the most is Whataburger,” Padalecki says. “[I get] the double-meat, double-cheese Whataburger with fries and a vanilla milkshake. It’s like 4,000 calories!”

That Lone Star state of mind pervades the boys’ Vancouver digs, too. We’re both pretty low-key,” says Padalecki. “You won’t see us at the clubs jumping up and down to rave music. We’d rather hang out at home. It’s nice. I have a gym in my garage, so we’ll work out in the mornings together. It’s just a very chill vibe. We’re both huge sports fans, so we’ll watch all the Dallas Cowboys games and throw on some steaks. But there are no bachelor pad goings-on here. It’s actually pretty boring, it’s just two dudes hanging out, cooking steaks.”

HIATUS BETWEEN SEASON 4 AND 5: Jensen and Jared attend All Hell Breaks Loose Sydney 2009 and Asylum 2009 and take holidays in Europe with their girlfriends. At Asylum 2009 Jensen mentioned that he and Danneel had holidayed in Paris and Scotland, while after the Con Jared and Genevieve had their photo taken with a fan at Rome airport. Both grow very shaggy beards. Jensen has laser eye surgery.

April 18-19: All Hell Breaks Loose Sydney 2009
Combine three jetlagged boys, a sugar high from Fantales, an auditorium of screaming fans the following glorious mayhem ensued - esp on Sunday from the time Jared came out at the end of Jensen's Q&A and leaped up onto the lectern, to Misha's memorable "Is it weird playing brothers when you're lovers in real life?" through the most disorgansied auction in Con history. There really was that feeling that anything could happen.

Also:

• Great reports from the Con of people's meetings with Danneel. Jared was traveling with two mates - Jordan and Michael who also attended the cocktail party.

Some other highlights:

• When Jared joined Jensen on stage they joked that they were going to reenact a scene from the finale. Jared says its "Jensen doing a sex scene. With me".
• Jared made many jokes about how Misha thought he was sexy, and kept saying "dragged me from perdition" in faux Castiel voice.
• They all gave some great insights into the acting process.
• On the Sunday, the last question of the Con, to Jared and Jensen, was "Is it weird playing lovers when your lovers in real life?" - asked from the audience by Misha!

I wish I was there, I have always wanted to come to Australia. I've wanted to get down under and sit around a jillaroo, eating billabongs, and tasting the gumnuts. I wanted to chew some Mallee Gum and meet this Matilda woman everyone goes on about. But with my book coming out this week, that wasn't possible I am hoping for next year.

I hope you are still having fun even without me - I know, I know impossible! I hope you guys and sheilas have a great time and save a cocoa koala for me. Be careful of Jared - he's a dag. Don't let him get in trouble, he doesn't know Christmas from Bourke Street.

And remember - fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.

May 13: Gay site AfterElton loves Supernatural
Supernatural is so gay (in my dreams anyway)]: Supernatural - and particularly Jared and Jensen have been favorites at gay site After Elton for a while. Despite the title, this is a great review of why the series is awesome TV.

After seasons of fighting everything from shape-shifters to a supernatural clown, the main characters are finally up against a truly difficult challenge: what happens when you fundamentally disagree with the person you love?

Two hot men who deeply love each other trying hard to work out their conflicts so that they can stay together? It’s easy to see how gay and bisexual viewers might relate. So chalk up one more reason why the show might appeal to us.

May 25: Smart is sexy. Jared is the featured speaker at the UIL Academic State Meet, in which his mother Sherri Padalecki, a teacher, is involved.

May 29-30: Asylum 2009 Jared, Jensen, Misha and many other guests are present for Asylum 2009 in Birmingham. Twitter provides a full con experience for fandom. Jensen has long(ish) hair, and has a bloodshot eye courtesy of recent laser eye surgery. There is the usually mayhem and madness, and Misha confirms his presence on Twitter and twisted sense of humour. Jared is his usual irrepresible self. Jason Manns not only performs at a concert on the Saturday night, but hosts the Q & As with Jared and Jensen on the Sunday. Highlights include

• Jared talking about crying during "Marley and Me"
• Jensen reveals he has a cockapoo called Icarus.
• Jared on his input into Sam "I help guide the ship of Sam down the river of Eric."
• Clif Kosterman, bodyguard for jared and Jensen, is also their driver but he lives about an hour away from them, so during the week Jared invites Clif to stay over with them.
• Jared and Jensen had a day off at the same time when Misha was doing 4.20 The Rapture and they didn't know what to do. Jensen said "Should we go to the set and see what they're doing?"
• There was a wedding at the hotel the Js are staying. A woman fell over and Jared and Jensen went to her rescue, helped her up and got her ice
• The boys' living arrangements seem more complex than originally thought

Queues continued to be so long, Jensen missed his last panel to finish signing autographs (Misha stepped in).

And a great anecdote:

Some woman and her kid went to stand between the two boys and the little girl took one look at them and ran to hide behind the table that all the photo-printing equipment was on. Jensen was all "now you've frightened her" to Jared, who then proceeded to do that really big laugh where he rocks back in his chair and claps his hands a lot. Then Jared gets up to try and comfort the girl but she ducks under the table. So of course Jared then has to duck under the table and just as he goes down, the little girl pops up the other side. By this point Jensen is killing himself laughing and saying to the bit of Jared sticking out "now you made her cry". Jensen then decides to jump up to the camera and start taking pictures of Jared and the hapless photographer who is trying to untangle the kid from the wires. The girl finally decides to completely run out of the room and Jared sits back down and says to Jensen "she probably saw My Bloody Valentine".

9 June:
Jensen plays golf alongside Joel McHale at the Paley Celebrity Golf Classic.

In an interview at the golf he talks about the S4 finale and how he prefers it when Sam and Dean are together and not in conflict.
21 June: Interview done with Jared during Asylum.

He talks about driving his dogs from Vancouver to Texas. Anyone else get the idea he's LARPing Sam Winchester?

I like the cheapest hotels, the $39 specials where it smells like someone has been smoking 15 packs of cigarettes a day and you go ‘ewww, gross’. Awesome!

It is fun to stay in places you’d never stay in. I wouldn’t if I was by myself but with the dogs laying next to me growling at the door every time someone walks past, they’re not going to rob my room, they’ll rob the next place.

Also - another installment in the "J2 how are they even real?" saga:

He and fellow Texan Jensen bonded so well that the latter bunked down in Jared’s guest room bedroom after the apartment he had been renting fell through. Jensen admitted it was also to support his co-star after he broke off his engagement to actress Sandra McCoy. However, Jensen is planning to rent his own place when they return to film series five.

“We’ll still hang out,” says Jared. “But it’ll probably be better not living together because we’d always be like ‘What’re you doing?’, ‘Nothing’, ‘Let’s have a beer’, then we’d stay up way too late when we had to get up early the next morning.”

Casting of Mark Pellegrino to play Lucifer in Season 5 is announced.

29 June:
Kane - the band fronted by Christian Kane and Steve Carlson - play at Dante's in Portland, Oregon. Also in attendance are Tim Hutton, Aldis Hodge (who both work on the TV show 'Leverage" with Chris which films in Portland), Jensen and Danneel. Jensen joins the band on stage for a few songs, including "Happy Birthday" for Christian Kane.
