Definition of Slash

The term slash refers to stories in which a homosexual relationship between two characters is portrayed, whether the sexual part of the relationship is explicitly described or not. Slash can be either fem-slash (female character/female character) or slash (male character/male character).

In any case, slash fiction isn't lesbian or gay fiction insofar as the characters portrayed rarely identify as being gay or lesbian.

The Supernatural Slash Fandom

Although there are other slash pairings in Supernatural except Sam/Dean, most slash stories in the Supernatural Fandom are Wincest.

Occasionally the brothers will be slashed with OMCs or characters from other fandoms (here especially Murphy or Connor MacManus from The Boondock Saints, Lindsay McDonald from Angel, for more see: crossovers). There is a slight tendency to slash Sam or Dean with a character that was played by either Jensen Ackles or Jared Padalecki in another tv-series or movie. (e.g. Sam/Jake from Devour, Sam/Alec from Dark Angel, Dean/Dean from Gilmore Girls).

After the airing of 1.22 Devil's Trap on May 4th, more and more Dean/John incest fics crept up, probably due to the chemistry between Dean and the possessed John. Sam/John fics are rarer and quite a lot of them deal with non-con.
