History
The biggest fanfiction event in Superantural fandom Big Bang challenge asks authors to write a 20,000+ word Supernatural or RPF story, while artists and vidders create pieces of artwork or trailer vids to accompany the stories
The first SPN J2 Big Bang challenge was held in 2007, moderated by wendy, audrarose, and estrella30. The idea came from similar challenges run in Harry Potter and Smallville fandoms, although the minimum requirement there was for 50,000+ words.
The 2007 Big Bang was declared officially over on July 5. According to moderator audrarose, there were 49 story contributions, 70 pieces of fan art, 5 vids and approximately one million words written.
The challenge has grown in subsequent years. By the end of the 2009 challenge, over 13 million words had been written for the event.
In 2010 the challenge is run by wendy and thehighwaywoman. There have been 687 sign-ups. posting is due to begin on June 1st 201201, and is staggered over the following months.
Stats for Big bang stories 2007-2009
Figure One shows the number of stories in each category. The totals for each year are: 28 (2007), 108 (2008), 225 (2009). The two fem slash stories in 2007 are included in the slash category – there weren’t any in subsequent years – the remainder of the stories were all Wincest. In 2009, the slash category contains 5 Dean/Castiel stories, and one Dean/OMC.

Figure Two shows the percentage of stories in the Wincest, Gen and RPF categories. Notably, the percentage of Gen stories has stayed pretty stable, with the big increase being in RPF fic which has gone from 42% of all fic in 2007, to 61% in 2009. The vast majority of these stories are RPF AU.
