The Reaper in Faith

In Supernatural, reapers are entities whose responsibility it is to escort newly-deceased souls to the afterlife. They are not aligned with Heaven or Hell, and refuse to tell the deceased what awaits them.

It has not been stated who created the Reapers. It may have been Death himself, as they appear to answer to him.

Killing two Reapers is one of the 66 Seals. This has to be done by performing a ritual and the actual killing involves using a special scythe - Death's Scythe. According to Alastair, the scythe belongs to Death the Horseman: "An old friend lent it to me. You know, he doesn't really ride a pale horse, but he does have three amigos."

Abilities:

• Are invisible to the human eye unless they're coming directly at a person. (Source: 1.12 Faith)
• Can be seen by humans in spirit or astral projection form. (Sources: 2.01 In My Time Of Dying and 4.15 Death Takes A Holiday)
• Can stop time (Source: 1.12 Faith)
• Can alter human perception to make themselves appear anyway they want (Source: 2.01 In My Time Of Dying)
• According to Castiel, Reapers gather in groups "at times of great catastrophe," and he lists the Chicago Fire of 1871, the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, and the destruction of Pompeii as examples. (Source: 5.10 Abandon All Hope)

• 1.12 Faith - Sue Le Grange uses black magic to harness a reaper and uses it to kill people whom she thinks are immoral.

• 2.01 In My Time Of Dying - the reaper appears as a young woman calling itself Tessa, who tries to help Dean cross over.

• 4.15 Death Takes A Holiday - Tessa turns up when a reaper in a small town disappears, and is herself kidnapped by Alistair.

• 5.10 Abandon All Hope - Reapers appear en masse in Carthage, Missouri as Lucifer prepares to summon Death.

• 5.21 Two Minutes To Midnight - Crowley sees a neighborhood in Chicago "swarming with reapers." Death is in town planning to unleash a storm and other natural disasters that will kill 3 million people.
