History

Prometheus is a Greek Titan (a proto-god) who gave fire back to mankind after Zeus took it away. His actions gave humanity some protection from the things in the dark and according to Zeus, caused the Greek gods to lose their hold on the world. As an act of revenge, Zeus chained Prometheus to a mountain somewhere in Europe and cursed him to die everyday and have his liver eaten by an eagle. Before his imprisonment, Prometheus had a secret relationship with Zeus' daughter Artemis. For thousands of years, Prometheus was cursed until in 2006 an avalanche freed him, though by that time, the constant cycle death and resurrection had caused him to gain amnesia. After being freed, he met Hayley, the only survivor of a group who were caught in the same avalanche and they made their way off the mountain, falling in love along the way. As he had no memory of who he was, Hayley named him Shane. After he died of a heart attack while having sex with her, Hayley fled and Prometheus ended up living in Montana for a few years until two pot farmers chased him off. Unbeknownst to him, Hayley became pregnant with his child, Oliver.

Walking along a street in Great Falls, Montana, Prometheus is hit by a driver who falls asleep at the wheel after drinking too much and dies. The next morning, a deputy finds his dead body with the eagle eating his liver and when the deputy goes to call his death in, Prometheus comes back to life and leaves.

The next day, Sam and Dean investigate his death and resurrection, believing him to be a zombie. By that time, Prometheus has died again of a grizzly bear attack and is in the morgue when they arrive. Prometheus awakens and Sam and Dean force him to come with them at gunpoint.

At their motel, Prometheus explains his history and asks if they kill him, to do it permanently as he is tired of the cycle of death and rebirth. That night, while he is sleeping, Artemis attacks him with a dagger capable of permanently killing him, but a confused Prometheus manages to fight her off. When he asks who she is, she tells him that she is his worst nightmare before disappearing. Soon afterwards. Prometheus dies again of a heart attack.

The next morning, Prometheus comes back to life and is surprised to find Hayley there with his son Oliver who's existence he was unaware of. Sam and Dean have discovered who he really is and explain it to him, but before they can take him and his family to The Bunker for safety, Oliver dies and they realize that he has the same curse as Prometheus.

The group travels to the Bunker where they decide to summon Zeus and force him to break the curse so that Prometheus and his son can live normal lives. Hayley has trouble accepting the truth about Prometheus and the group researches Zeus. Dean finds the journal of an ancient Greek hunter named Dracopolis who managed to trap Zeus and learned how to kill him. The group learns how to do the same and Prometheus and Sam set out to get the bone of someone who still worships Zeus for a summoning spell.

Prometheus and Sam dig the grave of a pagan and Prometheus questions Sam on why he is helping him. Sam tells him how its what they do and Prometheus is confused but happy.

At a warehouse, Sam and Dean summon and trap Zeus and ask him to break the curse on Oliver. Zeus only agrees to do it if they break the trap and tricks Hayley into breaking it. Instead of breaking the curse, Zeus stuns Prometheus, Sam and Dean with a blast of electricity and revels in the fact that Prometheus has a child afflicted by the same curse as him. Zeus plans to have Prometheus suffer through his son's death forever and feel that pain as a greater form of revenge. Zeus summons Artemis who stops Sam and Dean from killing him and has her take them away while he tortures Prometheus. After beating up and blasting Prometheus repeatedly, Zeus prepares to kill Oliver in front of Prometheus, but Artemis intervenes and demands Zeus release everyone. When he refuses, Artemis shoots an arrow capable of killing Zeus at him, but he pulls Prometheus in front of the arrow, mortally wounding him. As Zeus taunts him about enjoying watching Prometheus die over and over and planning to chain Oliver to the mountain to take his place, Prometheus pushes the arrow through himself and into Zeus, killing him in a blast of electricity. Prometheus dies permanently and Artemis mourns his death briefly before leaving with Zeus' body.

Prometheus' sacrifice breaks the curse on Oliver who is now free to live a normal life. Sam and Dean take his body into the woods and cremate him.

Prometheus in Lore

Prometheus is a Titan and considered a cultural hero in Greek mythology. He is credited for the creation of man from clay, and enabling the progress of civilization by stealing fire from Mount Olympus for the benefit of humanity. Because of his transgression the god Zeus punished Prometheus to an eternity of torment, where he would be bound to a rock and each day an eagle would come and eat his liver. In some versions of the story, Heracles, the half-mortal son of Zeus, is the one who frees Prometheus from his prison.
