Supernatural has a great tradition of pranks both on the Show and behind the scenes. In 2007 Jared also hosted MTV's Room 401 which was a horror version of Punk'd.

Pranks on the Show

The Winchester brothers have a history of pranking each other. In 1.17 Hell House, Dean pops a spoon in Sam's mouth while he sleeps in the car and snaps a photo of it - and the prank war is on! There is obviously a long history of this between the brothers - Dean refers to putting Nair in Sam's shampoo. Next Sam messes with the Impala so when Dean turns on the ignition salsa music blares from the radio and the windscreen wipers start up. Dean retaliates with itching powder in Sam's underwear. Not to be outdone, Sam puts superglue on Dean's beer bottle so it sticks to his hand.

Finally Sam and Dean call a truce and turn their attentions to Ed Zeddmore and Harry Spengler, with Sam calling them posing as a Hollywood producer who wants to option their website and make a movie and RPG based on them. Dean puts a dead fish in their back seat.

The Trickster aka Gabriel was all about pranks, and it was no surprise that the other Gods knew him as Loki. In 2.15 Tall Tales, he messes with the boys to make them argue - so Dean thinks Sam has let down the tires on the Impala and Sam thinks Dean has messed with his laptop. His ultimate prank is trapping them in an endless cycle of TV shows in 5.08 Changing Channels.

Pranks behind the Scenes

The Gag Reels featured on each season's DVDs give a pretty good idea of the fun to be had behind the scenes on Supernatural.

  • Fandom got an idea that organized pranks were a part of the Supernatural set from the Season 2 Gag reel. During the filming of 2.06 No Exit, as Jensen and then Jared climb down into a narrow, vertical concrete manhole, the crew under direction of Kim Manners dumped gallons of cold water down on them.
  • In an interview in June 2008, Jared said they had a plan to get Kim back. It was during this interview that the Twizzler incident occurred.
  • During 2.11 Playthings, Jared Padalecki stated that he and Jensen Ackles were somewhat freaked out by the room of blank-staring dolls in this episode. They kept daring each other to "poke" one particular eyeless doll in the eye sockets or to stand alone in the room. The pranks escalated slightly when Jared put a few of the dolls in Jensen's trailer "just to freak him out".
  • During the filming of 3.10 Dream a Little Dream of Me, in the scene where Bobby is in the hospital, Jared kept twisting Jim Beaver's toes, trying to get him to laugh. At the Salute to Supernatural Chicago 2008, Jared and Jensen related the following anecdote:
    Jim was lying in a hospital bed, trying to deliver his lines to Jensen and Jared, and just off camera, Jared was trying to make him mess up by playing with his toes while he was lying there. ... Jensen said Jared was playing “This Little Piggy Went to Market” and everything. Despite the distraction from Jared, Jensen said Jim delivered his lines perfectly and then as soon as the cameras stopped, yelled “What’s wrong with you?” to Jared. Jared said that Jim has “toes of steel” and that he was very impressed and will have to step up his game.

ELLEN RULES!
Near the end of filming of Season 5, Ellen DeGeneres announced plans for world domination, which some saw as a challenge to the rule of @mishacollins. Production Assistant Lesley DeHaan, known to fandom as @vancouvernights, took the teasing onto the set. She then organized fans to bring cut-out pictures of Ellen to Asylum Europe: No Rest for the Wicked 2010. The results are captured in this video.

THE UNDERWEAR PRANK
At Salute to Supernatural Chicago 2009, Richard Speight Jr. told the story of finding a pair of pumpkin-colored briefs in his trailer. He thought it was a prank by Jared and Jensen, but found out that they were Misha's. One day he'd spilled soup on his pants and had to change and the only spare briefs he had were the pumpkin colored ones - a gift from a fan! The Wardrobe Department had later laundered them and put them in Richard's trailer by mistake.

Before the Jus In Bello Italy 2010 in April 2010, Richard encouraged fans to "show Misha how much you care by bringing him a pair of men's bikini brief underwear"

On return from Europe on April 28, Misha posted a picture of himself with the underwear.

MISHA VERSUS JARED

APRIL FOOLS

  • On April 1, 2014 several media outlets tweeted that SuperSleepy had been greenlit and would be a 13 episode series on Hulu (Source). This turned out to be an April Fools prank which saw Misha getting punked in return by PR Head Suzanne Gomez, who sent an email implying Misha was in trouble with CW Network President Mark Pedowitz.

How my April Fools' prank went horribly wrong...

I can over think things. Lately I’ve been a bit anxious: Do I have a job next year or don't I? So when Orlando Jones [@theorlandojones] called me last week and asked if I wanted to join in his April Fools’ prank, stating that he and I would be starring in a new double-spinoff series—an amalgamation of Supernatural and Sleepy Hallow called SuperSleepy—I gave him a qualified "yes." I said, "it's a great idea, but let me make sure the network isn’t going to be pissed at me, because I know they are getting pestered by fans about whether I have a future on Supernatural and I want to make sure I’m not pissing any network brass off." (We were on the phone at the time, but I could tell Orlando rolled his eyes.) I then ran his idea by the VP of Publicity at the CW, Suzanne Gomez (@chico6) who told me that as long as we didn't mention any executive's names in our faux press release, I should be okay.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, because I’m thinking the same thing: LAME! Checking with bosses before an April Fools’ prank?! I’m not proud of it, but that’s what I did.

We launched the scheme with the help of an online TV journalist, Laura Prudom [@LauInLA], who was willing to compromise her journalistic integrity for the sake of a good prank. Laura published the story on TVFanatic.com as a real news piece on April 1st. Orlando and I also played it off as a legit news story on our Twitter feeds as did Robbie Thomson [@rthompson1138], the Supernatural writer who may or may not have coined the term “SuperSleepy.”

Orlando penned a genius faux press release, which we Laura posted in full with a little commentary. We launched the prank at 5pm EST, by which time everyone was already on-guard regarding the first of April. So it met with something of a fizzle, sadly. 9 out of 10 posts I saw on twitter said, “I’d love to watch the new series, if it wasn’t April Fools’!” Oh, well. We had fun. We’ll get you next time.

Then I got an email. From Roman Browne. Before you read it, you should know that “Mark Pedowitz” is the President of the CW Network. This is the email:

Dear Misha,

Mark Pedowitz has expressed some concern and would like to speak with you in regards to the press release you put out earlier today. I have him calling in from NY in about 15-mins. Are you available to speak with him then?

Please confirm, thanks.

It was instantly clear to me what the call was about. I’m going to get fired. Mark has never called me before. At least there will be some finality here. At least I’ll know that it’s over.

I immediately got online, opened my twitter and retweeted myself (something I didn’t previously know was possible) with the added comment, “April Fools’!’” With one swift click of the mouse flushing the whole prank and along with it, my prank-mates Orlando and Laura down the toilet. I had to. It was a preemptive apology to my boss’s boss, Mr. Pedowitz. When I talked to him I wanted to be able to say, “I already put that one to rest. Sorry about that. Let me know how I can make it right.”

My wife and I were just starting to put the kids to sleep but I said, “honey, I’ve need a few minutes. The president of the network is calling to fire me for that that stupid April Fools’ tweet.” “Okay,” She said, kicking into triage mode, “I’ll handle them!” I then called Mark’s assistant, Roman Browne. The phone rang, and he picked up, “Mark Pedowitz office,” the voice said. “Hi.” I said, “This is misha collins [lowercase intentional] I just got an email from you?” “Misha,” Roman said, “Please hold for Mark Pedowitz.” Oh my God! I waited. At this point, I’m standing in the yard so the call wouldn’t be interrupted by screaming children. My heart’s pounding in my chest. A woman’s voice came on: “Misha?” Me: “Yes?” “Hi, it’s Suzanne…. April Fools’!”

This is why I don’t trust VPs of Publicity. They trick me and make me look stupid. My self-loathing was only counterbalanced by my empathetic glee at Suzanne’s treachery. She got me good.

  • April Fools 2018 saw Misha tweeting an article that said he had been cast in possibly multiple roles in a reboot of the Harry Potter series.
