After a confrontation with Sam and Dean that leaves one dragon dead and another escaped, Sam and Dean rescue the group of virgins the dragons had captured and discover an ancient Latin manuscript made from human skin, which [[Bobby Singer|Bobby]] deduces is actually a manual for accessing Purgatory and raising the "[[Mother]] of All" from its depths.

The escaped dragon meets up with another who has rounded up a half dozen or so other virgins, amongst them a girl named Penny. The dragons select the unfortunate girl as their chosen candidate to serve as the vessel of [[Mother]], a goddess implied to have been the originator of all supernatural beings, most prominently the [[Alpha]]s. Using the knowledge gained from the ancient manuscript, the dragons succeed in opening a doorway to Purgatory, upon which they cast Penny into it. Out of the portal, Penny's figure rises again as the vessel of Mother, allowing her to walk the Earth.
