Not sure what I'm doing up here, Mary. Just felt like I had to come. Elton Ridge -- it's where you told me you'd marry me. Long time ago. But now... No one's real happy with me right now. Guess I can't blame 'em. I wouldn't even give you a funeral. But how can you have a funeral when you've seen what I've seen? How can you shake the hands of family and friends, catching sorrow in their eyes as you bury a secret a little deeper in your gut? How do you stand alongside a man of God who's reading from the Bible and talking about Heaven and peace on Earth? You weren't in peace, Mary. That much I know. As for the rest of it -- I'm about to find out. I promise you that much with all my heart and soul.

John Winchester, Supernatural: Origins #1

Date: December 1983
Place: Lawrence, Kansas

After the death of his wife, John Winchester is looking for answers. He has seen his wife, Mary die in an unimaginable way and no-one can explain what happened. John begins his journey for answers by first questioning his neighbor, Chuck; the fire men to who fought the fire the night of Mary's death; and the police, but is told that the house was burned so badly that they couldn't identify how it started and the police have decided it was an accidental death caused by faulty wiring. John hasn't been to work in weeks, and he and the boys are staying with Mary's best friend, Julie. One Friday night, John goes out to a bar, hustling his way through a few games of pool in order to get a little extra money until he gets into a fight. The fight is broken up by a woman called Missouri who tells John that she is a psychic, and tells him that she's senses that something is wrong with him and wants to offer her help. John doesn't believe her, thinking she is just trying to hustle him, until she mentions Dean and Sam -- which catches his attention.

A week later he visits Missouri in her trailer and she reveals the truth to him: there is evil in the world, and that is what killed Mary. She tells him that she can help him find out exactly what happened, but it will take a sacrifice from him. In this case, she needs a whole fingernail. After she removes one of his fingernails, they sit together and Missouri begins to see visions: a blue door, a weather vane, a water tower, a street sign, a house and eventually two words written on a wall in blood: "WE'RE COMING." John recognizes the location and believes it to be a warning that someone is in danger. When he and Missouri arrive at the house, they can hear a faint child's voice coming from the inside. Following the sounds, they enter the basement, noting the smell of blood that is all over the floor. When they find the source of the voice, it is just a toy hidden in a cabinet. Confused, they turn around and discover the message from the vision written in blood on the walls. What Missouri saw in her vision was only part of the message, and it now says: "WE'RE COMING FOR THE CHILDREN."

Fearing it was all a diversion to get to Dean and Sam, John drives back to Julie's house, where the boys are sleeping. Horrified, he walks in to find blood everywhere and the remains of Mary's friend. He dashes upstairs to the boys, finding them safe and sound in bed. Missouri tells John that he needs to take the boys and leave immediately. She hands him a demonic looking tooth she found in Julie's remains and says that it belonged to whatever killed Mary. Missouri believes that it will help John find it.

Back-up Story

Date: November 2, 1989
Place: Tulsa, Oklahoma

Dean and Sam have gone to the pool in the motel they're staying in, only to find it filled with garbage and no water. Sam reminds Dean that it is their mother's birthday that day and asks how old she would be. Dean answers that she would be 34 and when Sam asks how she died, Dean tells him that it was a car accident. They return to their room, just as John and another person come flying through the window, fighting with knives. John shouts at Dean to get Sam in the car and drive. Sam doesn't want to leave their dad, but they get in the Impala and Dean drives to a location three miles north, like John has taught them to do in emergencies. They wait for John, but Sam is scared and start to cry, causing Dean to shout at him. He instantly regrets it and pulls his little brother closer. He makes Sam promise to never ask anything about their mom again. In return, he promises to teach Sam how to swim. With Sam still crying, they settle down to wait...

  • John Winchester: Husband to Mary Winchester, who becomes obsessed with finding out what killed his wife.
  • Dean Winchester: Five-year-old son of John and Mary Winchester, who hasn't spoken a word since the death of his mother.
  • Sam Winchester: Eight-month-old son of John and Mary Winchester.
  • Missouri Moseley: Psychic based out of Lawrence, Kansas who reveals to John the world of the supernatural, and seeks to help him get answers behind what killed Mary.
  • Julie: Best friend of Mary Winchester, who has taken John and the boys into her home after the house fire.
  • Chuck: Neighbor of the Winchesters that John questions about the night of the fire, due to his bedroom looking onto the Winchester's house.

  • John asked Mary to marry him in a place called Elton Ridge.
  • He didn't give her a funeral after she died, knowing he couldn't stand alongside someone who was insisting she was at peace now - not after he saw the way she died.
  • Dean stopped speaking when John told him about Mary. He doesn't speak until towards the end of the issue, when he says just one word: "daddy."
  • According to the back-up story, Mary's birthday was the same date as the day she died. However, this could be something that John told the boys to make them remember the date, rather than her actual birthday. Dean also seems to believe that Mary died in a car accident.
