History

Nephilim are the offspring of humans and angels. Their creation is forbidden and they are considered to be abominations by Heaven. The oldest known Nephilim in the lore was the Queen of Sheba, who visited King Solomon; he created a tracking spell for Nephilim to keep an eye on her.

At one point, there was only one, Jane, known to be on Earth. Jane was killed by Castiel after Metatron told him it was necessary, as one of the trials to close the Gates to Heaven required a Nephilim heart.

After Lucifer possesses President Jefferson Rooney and has sex with Kelly Kline, a presidential aide, he purposefully channels an immense amount of cosmic energy, resulting in the conception of another Nephilim, Jack. Due to the immense power used by Lucifer, the cosmic shock wave alerts all angels as well as the British Men of Letters of its creation.

Characteristics

The Nephilim appear human, but when they are provoked, they reveal glowing silver eyes. However, the Nephilim Jack possesses golden eyes, possibly due to being born of an archangel as opposed to a regular angel. The gestation period for a Nephilim child is shorter than that of a normal human, around six months, and they appear to have the ability to be born fully matured into young adulthood if they so choose. When a Nephilim is born there are usually signs accompanying the birth such as storms, outbreaks of disease, plagues of locusts, massive power outages, and even tears in space and time. Due to being considered abominations of nature and Heaven, a Nephilim can cause dangerous reactions around objects considered holy, as shown when Kelly Kline set a Bible aflame just by placing her hand on it while pregnant with her son Jack.

According to the lore, it is said that as a Nephilim grows into its power, it will become more powerful than the angel that sired it.

8.22 Clip Show

Jane, a Nephilim, who is according to Metatron the only one in existence, works as a waitress at a restaurant called Eugenies in Ojai, California, and serves Metatron and Castiel. When the two decide that Castiel will do the three trials to seal off Heaven, Metatron reveals that the waitress is a Nephilim and Castiel must kill her and cut out her heart to complete the first trial. That night, the two angels follow Jane, but she reveals her knowledge of what they are and begs them not to kill her. As she is an innocent woman, Castiel hesitates, but when she attacks him and Metatron, Castiel kills her with his angel blade while she is distracted, thus completing the trial.

12.08 LOTUS

Soon after Lucifer, in the body of President Jefferson Rooney, has sex with his mistress, Kelly Kline, Castiel's head is besieged with the sounds of angel radio. He tells Sam and Dean that there has been a massive surge of celestial energy, indicating a Nephilim has come into existence. Due to the power involved in the surge, it could not have been a regular angel, only Lucifer.

The Winchesters task Crowley with collecting Kelly; once she is brought to their motel room, they explain the situation. When she doesn't believe what they are telling her, Castiel has her place her hand on a Bible. Because Nephilim are an abomination to Heaven, the Bible begins to catch fire. After talking Kelly into helping lure Lucifer into a trap, the archangel is expelled from the president's body. As Sam and Dean stay behind to check on the president, Castiel takes Kelly away. As they are sitting in a diner, Kelly excuses herself to the bathroom. In reality she sneaks out of the diner and hails a taxi. She calls Castiel from the road and tells him she's keeping the baby, telling him she can feel it inside her and that it's still her child.

12.10 Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets

In 1901 Castiel and his garrison are taken to Orono, Maine, by their commander Ishim, under the pretenses of eliminating a Nephilim. In 2017, Castiel learns the truth that the child Ishim killed, May, was in fact a human, and the deaths of the child and angel Akobel were due only to Ishim's spite and anger for Lily Sunder's romantic rejection.

12.13 Family Feud

When Crowley tells Lucifer that the Winchesters have "taken care of" his child, Lucifer corrects him, telling Crowley that he can feel his child is still alive.

Kelly Kline, now a couple of months pregnant, is beset by two angels looking to kill her and her unborn child by orders of Heaven. She is saved by the Prince of Hell, Dagon, who tells Kelly that she is carrying a boy, and her child could be a savior to everyone.

12.19 The Future

After Kelly attempts suicide to prevent the death and destruction that may come from her child, she is resurrected by him, bringing her a sense of hope. After Castiel absconds with Kelly, the Nephilim begins communicating with her, telling her that she needs to follow Castiel's plan, no matter how scared she may be, as Castiel will ensure that he is born.

Sam theorizes that removing the grace can prevent Kelly and her baby from dying. Since Nephilim are human souls infused with angelic grace, if the grace is removed then it would render them human. After hearing their plan, Kelly refuses to let them take away what makes her baby special.

At the sandbox, as Dagon is about kill Castiel, he clasps hands with Kelly and is imbued with the power from the Nephilim, causing his blue eyes to glow gold. He is given the strength to restrain Dagon and immolate her to ash. When Kelly asks what the Nephilim told him, Castiel tells her the child showed him the future.

12.23 All Along the Watchtower

The Nephilim is born in an explosion of white light.

With the Nephilim birth nearing, strange signs of its impending arrival begin to manifest. First a tear in space and time appears behind the lakehouse in North Cove, Washington, that Castiel and Kelly have rented, which leads to an alternate Earth where angels and demons are locked in a never-ending war. The next sign is a massive blackout originating from the house's location, which allows Sam and Dean to find them due to Castiel using the alias "James Novak" to rent the house.

When the Winchesters arrive, Sam, Dean, and Castiel venture to the alternate Earth while Mary stays with Kelly to help her through the birth. As Sam, Dean, Castiel, and Crowley battle Lucifer outside and in the alternate Earth, Kelly tells her child she loves him and the Nephilim is finally born through an explosion of white light, which knocks Mary unconscious and kills Kelly. After the death of Castiel and Mary being pulled into the alternate Earth by Lucifer, Sam notices a pulsating light coming from inside the house. He goes to investigate, only to find Kelly lying peacefully dead in the bed. He hears a noise coming from Jack's nursery and notice footprints scorched into the wood floor as he slowly enters the room. Sam soon finds a fully grown Jack sitting in the corner. As Jack looks up at a shocked Sam, his eyes glow gold and he gives a knowing smile to Sam.

13.01 Lost and Found

After Dean narrowly misses shooting Jack in the head, Jack gives his first display of his true power when he releases a wave of celestial energy that lifts and suspends Sam and Dean off the ground, before hurtling them into the walls of the nursery, rendering them unconscious. With the Winchesters out of the way, Jack goes on the search for his father, which eventually brings him to a Pirate Pete's Jolly Treats restaurant. Upon seeing him naked and asking for his father, one of the employees, Clark Barker, places a call to his mother, Sheriff Christine Barker, who soon arrives on the scene and is able to talk Jack into coming with her to the sheriff's department.

Giving him some clothes from the lost and found, Sheriff Barker does not know what to make of Jack's odd behavior and his inability to answer her questions. She takes his thumb print (which is revealed to not be that of a normal human). Clark begins questioning Jack, who reveals that he is hungry. Upon being taken to the break room, Jack displays an ability to cause electrical surges, making the candy in the vending machines fall out from a single touch by him. When Sheriff Barker notices the strange flickering lights, she is led to the break room where she finds Jack and Clark eating candy on the floor. After Jack shows off his new ability to the sheriff, he is suddenly besieged by the voices of angels through angel radio. As he goes to leave, Sheriff Barker attempts to stop him, but Jack's powers react to her touching him and he sends a wave of energy towards her, knocking her into the vending machines. As Jack continues through the station, he is confronted by Dean once more, but before he can react, Jack is hit with a taser from Sam, incapacitating him.

Upon finding the Winchesters standing over Jack's unconscious body, Sheriff Barker places Jack and Sam in a holding cell while she questions Dean. When Jack regains consciousness, he is prepared to attack Sam, but Sam is able to calm him down and explain he's not going to hurt him. Jack explains to Sam that when he hears the voices he gets scared and can't control himself. He goes on to explain to Sam that through his connection with his mother he was able to learn the English language and know that he would have to grow up fast to protect himself from danger, and that his father would protect him. When Sam tries to explain Lucifer to Jack, Jack reveals that Castiel is his father, as he was the one that his mother told him would protect him.

When a trio of angels arrive at the station looking for Jack, two are able to locate him and Sam in the holding cells. As Sam tries to defend himself and Jack from the angels, they are badly and easily beaten, but before the angels can abscond with Jack, Sam is able to draw an angel banishing sigil that sends them away. When the angel Miriam realizes that she will not be able to take Jack with her, she feigns surrender to Sam, offering up her angel blade before stabbing Jack in the heart, telling the Winchesters if she can't have him no one will. Sam in retaliation swiftly kills Miriam. Jack drops to his knees and slowly pulls out the angel blade from his chest, having survived it with no ill effects.

In the aftermath, realizing the safest place for Jack and the world at large is with them at the Bunker, Sam, Dean, and Jack make a stop at the lake house to give Castiel and Kelly Kline a funeral pyre.

13.02 The Rising Son

While trying to understand Jack and his powers, Sam and Dean ask him if he is capable of teleportation. Not understanding what that means, Dean simplifies the question asking if Jack wanted to be on the other side of the door, how would he do it. Jack, stands up, and exits the door through the door, closing it behind him and knocks on the door, and waits until Sam opens it for him.

The sudden arrival of Donatello Redfield reveals to the Winchesters that Jack has waves of intense power coming off of him, so much so that Donatello assumed that it was God. Learning that Jack is a Nephilim, and the son of Lucifer, Donatello notes that Jack's power is nothing like Lucifer's, remarking it is not dark or toxic. Realizing that if Donatello is capable of locating Jack, others may be able too. Sam and Dean quickly decide to get Jack tattooed with warding sigils, at first Jack's reaction to the pain of the needle touching his skin causes him to send out a burst of energy, knocking the artist through the air and into his wall. Jack quickly understands that he will need to deal with the pain as a part of the human experience and allows the artist to continue without incident. However, as soon as the artist is done, Jack, as if on reflex heals the fresh tattoos off of his body, giving further proof to Dean that Jack is dangerous. As Sam, Dean and Donatello argue about Jack back at the motel, Dean's explosion of anger towards Jack causes him to teleport into a near by alley where Sam finds him. Not understanding why Dean hates him, Sam tries to explain that Dean is more scared than angry and just wants to make sure people are protected.

Asmodeus is able to track down Jack and the Winchesters, where he takes on the form of Donatello and steals away with Jack. Asmodeus as Donatello, takes Jack Jasper, Wyoming where he tells him a tale of the shedim, warriors locked away in a distant cavern in Hell and that God wants Jack to free them. As Jack begins to concentrate, the ground below him begins to open up and devil's gate, and with Asmodeus' urging Jack begins to concentrate and bring forth the shedim. But the with the sudden arrival of the Winchesters and the real Donatello, Asmodeus' manipulation is revealed and upon seeing him hurting his friends, Jack turns on Asmodeus by closing the devil's gate and sending the shedim back, but Asmodeus is able to escape before Jack turns his anger on the Prince of Hell.

Back at the Bunker, Dean hears an odd sound coming from Jack's room, and finds him repeatedly stabbing himself in the chest with a kitchen knife, much to his horror, Dean takes the knife away from Jack; who questions Dean what he is. Dean tells him that while Sam thinks he can be saved, Dean is not convinced and when the time comes for Jack to die, Dean tells him it will be him that does it.

13.08 The Scorpion and the Frog

The crossroads demon Barthamus offers Sam and Dean a genuine Nephilim tracking spell in exchange for helping him, giving them the first half of the spell to confirm its veracity. At the Bunker, Sam looks into the spell, confirming to Dean that it looks legit. He says the spell is of Canaanite origin, dating back to the time of King Solomon who used the spell to keep tabs on the Queen of Sheba, who herself was purported in lore to be a Nephilim.

Nephilim in Fandom

During the first two seasons of Supernatural, there was much fan speculation that Sam may have been a Nephilim.

Nephilim in Lore

In the Hebrew Scriptures, Nephilim are said to be the offspring of the "sons of God" and the "daughters of men." The coupling of angels and human women was said to produce giants.

The word "Nephilim," pronounced neh-feel-EEM, is Hebrew and plural. The word for a single offspring of an angel and human is "Naphil," pronounced nah-FEEL.
