History
God created the archangels: Michael, Lucifer, Raphael, and Gabriel. Lucifer, the second of the archangels created, was the most favored of God and formed an especially strong bond with his older brother Michael.
Together they battled and defeated God's sister, the Darkness, an evil older than God. After tricking her and trapping the Darkness, rather . Rather than destroying her and causing a disruption in the Cosmic Balance, God created a Mark to serve as the lock and key to her cage, and gave it to His most trusted archangel -- Lucifer. The Mark eventually began assert a will of its own and began to corrupt Lucifer.
Soon after the arrival of humanity, Lucifer began to argue with his brothers and with God because of his contempt for humanity which was further amplified by the Mark. The arguments became so heated and bitter that Gabriel chose to leave Heaven rather than watch the fighting ensue. According to Lucifer, God commanded His angels to venerate Manman, but Lucifer refused and was cast out of Heaven. As an act of defiance, Lucifer twisted a human being's soul to create the first demon, Lilith. After Lilith was created, he went on to create the Princes of Hell: Azazel, Ramiel, Asmodeus, and Dagon. Lucifer eventually passed the Mark on to Cain. Cain was ordered by Lucifer to create the Knights of Hell from some of the first fallen humans hand-picked by Lucifer.
After Lilith Lucifer was created, he went on to create the confined against his will in a Cage: by God. He intended to destroy humanity and kill fight Michael. Essential to Lucifer's plan was the possession of his destined vessel -- Sam Winchester.
Sam and Dean tried to find a way of defeating Lucifer without giving in to the plans of Heaven. They attempted , first they would attempt to kill Lucifer with the the Colt but failed, revealing that Lucifer was one of only five things in existence that is immune to it. Eventually Sam came up with a plan in which he would allow Lucifer to possess him and then force him into the Cage. The initial attempt failed, but when Lucifer confronted Michael at Stull Cemetery, Sam managed to gain enough control to fling himself and Lucifer into the Cage, pulling Michael and Adam in as well.
After Lucifer's defeat, a group of traditionalist angels, led by Raphael, hoped to release both Lucifer and Michael to complete the Apocalypse as prophesied. When Sam was released from the Cage, his soul remained behind until Death retrieved it.
After the release of the Darkness, Sam experienced visions that he thought were from God, directing him to speak to Lucifer to find a way to overcome the Darkness. With Crowley's help, the three captured Rowena and she used the Book of the Damned to find a way to communicate with Lucifer without opening the Cage.
Lucifer was eventually revealed to be behind the visions Sam received and was working with Rowena to escape. Though Lucifer insisted he could defeat the Darkness, Sam refused to say yes, knowing if Lucifer won he would once more attempt to bring on the Apocalypse. Lucifer was apparently banished back to the Cage, but in reality gained the permission of Castiel to possess him.
Possessing Castiel, Lucifer regained control of Hell and made Crowley his "dog". Posing as Castiel, he aided Sam and Dean in their efforts to retrieve the Hand of God from the USS Bluefin before revealing himself to them. After Lucifer learned that the Hand of God's power was expended, Sam managed to banish him and the Winchesters became determined to free Castiel from Lucifer's control.
With Metatron's help they freed Lucifer, and eventually Chuck and Lucifer reconciled once Chuck apologized. With Lucifer fully on their side, he, the Winchesters, and God worked on a plan to defeat Amara by imprisoning her with the Mark to maintain the Cosmic Balance. With Lucifer being the only available archangel, the group brought in the witches, demonsd and angels to weaken Amara so that God could lock her away again. With the help of Castiel, Lucifer was able to convince the angels to aid in the attack and once Amara was weakened, struck her down with a blow from his spear. However, Amara recovered before God could lock her away again and attacked God. Lucifer rushed to his father's aid, but Amara flung him against a wall and yanked Lucifer from Castiel's body. When Dean checked on Lucifer after the fight, Castiel told him that Lucifer was gone from his body and he didn't know where Lucifer went.
Lucifer survived his expulsion by Amara but was left weakened for a time and began searching for a new vessel. After burning out several people, Lucifer possessed aging rock star Vince Vincente. After a failed attempt by Crowley and Rowena to return him to his Cage, Lucifer kidnapped Rowena and attempted to force her to make Vince his permanent vessel. Instead, Rowena accelerated the decaying process and banished Lucifer to the bottom of the ocean. Lucifer eventually returned after a couple of amateur Satanists tried to summon him and used an old feather to repair Vince temporarily. Believing God used and abandoned him, Lucifer attempted to use Vince to murder innocent people but was stopped by the Winchesters, Crowley, and Castiel. After Vince burned out, Lucifer moved on with no plan but to have fun and destroy everything in his path. After possessing a couple more people and causing more mayhem, Lucifer eventually possessed President Jefferson Rooney and conceived a Nephilim with Rooney's mistress Kelly Kline. Lucifer was ultimately lured into a trap by the Winchesters, Castiel, Crowley, and Rowena, and cast from Rooney by Sam with a hyperbolic pulse generator, forcing him to vacate the president.
It is later revealed that Crowley altered Rowena's spell to send Lucifer back to the Cage and had him sent to the reconstructed body of his former vessel Nick instead, keeping him wrapped in chains in the Needham Asylum. With the help of two loyalists, Lucifer was briefly able to escape, but Crowley reveals that he had the spellwork from the Cage carved into every molecule of his vessel which allowed Crowley to effectively torture Lucifer, preventing him from using his powers or vacating his vessel. Drexel is able to inspect the vessel and discovers that the security system is slowly powering up in the opposite direction, giving Lucifer control over Crowley. He later uses this to escape and destroy the security system in his vessel's body and "killing" Crowley in the process, although he actually escapes death by possessing a rat. Lucifer leaves to find Kelly Kline and Castiel to retrieve his son, but Sam, Dean, and Mary are able to beat him to Castiel's cabin and find a way to imprison him in another dimension with a rift inadvertently opened by the unborn Nephilim's impending birth. Upon passing through the rift, Dean distracts him while Sam and Crowley cast a spell to close the rift; the spell requires a life, so Crowley sacrifices himself to complete the spell. Castiel barrels after Lucifer and stabs him with his angel blade to give Sam and Dean time to escape. Castiel passes through the rift, but Lucifer follows him and kills him with his angel blade. Mary uses her Enochian Brass Knuckles to send him back through the rift, but she gets trapped along with him as the rift closes. Meanwhile his son, Jack Kline, is brought into the world.
Over time, Lucifer is able to restore some of his power, especially when Castiel angers him by telling him how his son favors his mother and the rest of the Winchesters. They are able to kill a few demons on the way out of the asylum, but Lucifer wants to feed on Castiel's grace to regain more of his power; Castiel stabs him with an angel blade in response. Lucifer later tracks down other angels with the intent of consuming their grace and killing them, until he finds the angel Anael under the alias of "Sister Jo." She allows him to feed on her grace in stages to give her time to recharge and keep herself alive. He is able to restore much of his power before the Winchesters catch up to him. He tries to kill them, but Ketch scares him and Anael away with a demon bomb. After seeking an audience with Dumah and the other remaining angels, they agree to make him Heaven's ruler under the condition that he makes more angels and gives the existing ones their wings back. He claims that he watched God when He created the angels and knows how to make more, but he later reveals to Anael that he lied to get the angels on his side. He eventually becomes disillusioned with his position in Heaven and tries to drink his sorrows away, only to be captured by Rowena and the supposedly-deceased Gabriel and taken to the Bunker. His grace is used to open the rift to Apocalypse World, and he is trussed up, throat slit and grace dripping into a bowl in order to keep the rift open past the spell's usual time limit. Eventually he is able to break free of his restraints and he tries to kill Rowena, who blasts him to Apocalypse World. There he finds more of Michael's angels and feeds on their grace to further restore his power. He stumbles upon Sam's body after Sam is killed by a rabid group of vampires and Lucifer revives him in exchange for Sam facilitating a meeting with Jack.
When they reach Apocalypse World Bobby's resistance camp, Lucifer tries to make a good impression on Jack. Gabriel later tells him that he always makes himself look like a victim for everything that happened and that he was imprisoned to prevent him from spoiling mankind. After everyone in the camp decides to go with Sam and Dean back through the rift, Lucifer drives the bus that transports them all to the site of the rift. Upon arrival, they are ambushed by Michael, who battles with and kills Gabriel. Sam turns on Lucifer and leaves him behind while he passes through the rift. Devastated at Gabriel's death and Sam's betrayal, Lucifer decides to help Michael make another rift on the condition that Lucifer gets Jack and Michael gets everything else.
After making his way back, he kills Maggie from the Apocalypse World in the hopes that Jack will react. He tries to manipulate Jack into leaving with him, and Jack agrees on the condition that Lucifer resurrect Maggie, which he reluctantly does. Before they can leave on their father-son adventure, Sam prays to Jack and calls him back when Michael invades the Bunker and tries to kill Dean. Jack is able to torture Michael to the point of revealing that he made a deal with Lucifer. Sam tells Jack that Maggie had revealed that it was Lucifer who killed her. Lucifer denies it, but Jack compels him to tell the truth and realizes that Lucifer is nothing more than a monster. Giving up on swaying his son to his side, Lucifer uses Gabriel's archangel blade to steal the majority of Jack's grace, becoming more powerful than ever. He escapes with Jack and Sam and reveals his plan to destroy everything and remake the universe in his image. He attempts to force Jack or Sam to kill each other under threat of killing them both, dropping the archangel blade between them. Sam picks it up, but hands it to Jack and tells him to kill him; Jack isn't strong enough to kill Lucifer with the blade and is about to use it to kill himself when Dean and Michael arrive. In a final effort to defeat Lucifer, Dean has become the vessel of the Apocalypse World Michael. With Michael powering him, Dean battles Lucifer in the church, but Lucifer gets the upper hand and tries to smite Dean and Michael. Sam throws the archangel blade to Dean's hand and he stabs Lucifer in the heart, finally killing him once and for all. They celebrate killing Lucifer, but their victory is cut short when Michael reneges on his deal with Dean, taking full control of his body and disappearing.
Characteristics
Personality
Lucifer was once God's first in favor, loving him best of all his sons, even more than Michael, having been entrusted with the Mark to keep the Darkness at bay. However the Mark would eventual assert it's own will and become the first curse. Lucifer was proud, but when humanity was created, he was unwilling to accept its place in God's favor (Gabriel described it as the favorite son resenting the new baby). It was this pride that would become amplified by the Mark, and so when God commanded all of Heaven to love His new children more than Himself, Lucifer refused. Lucifer pleaded: "Father, I can't. These humans are flawed. Murderous!" After persistent disobedience, Lucifer was cast out of Heaven.
Lucifer claims that he never lies, because he does not have to. He promises his vessels Nick and Sam that he will be honest with them and never trick them. He also says that he sympathizes with them, both of whom are victims like himself. He goes to some lengths to get Sam's acceptance, sparing Dean's life once, and allowing Sam to exact revenge against some of the demons that controlled many events in his life.
A prideful angel, Lucifer does , however, show concern for his fellow angels, though it is the archangels he loves most. He captures Castiel, and admires the lesser angel's loyalty in refusing to reveal the presence of his friends. He invites Castiel to join him, and when Castiel refuses, Lucifer respects his decision. Lucifer is remorseful when forced to kill Gabriel, and disappointed when Michael berates him. When preparing to fight his older sibling in their pre-destined battle, Lucifer pleads with Michael to "walk off the chessboard," but Michael is determined to fulfill his destiny and serve God. Even so, when Castiel Molotovs Michael with holy oil, Lucifer is outraged by the attack on his brother and obliterates Castiel.
Gabriel criticizes Lucifer, describing his actions as "one big temper tantrum." Death and Crowley make similar observations, dismissing Lucifer as " ...a petulant child with daddy issues." and " ...a bratty child having a tantrum." Nonetheless, Lucifer sees himself as a tragic figure who was punished for being right, dismissing humanity as a defective and savage race even as Gabriel argues that he prefers humanity because they at least try to do better. He refuses to accept any blame for his actions, which as Michael observes, is nothing new, and suggests that God intentionally made Lucifer the Devil.
After his rescue and meeting God again, Lucifer's personality is more of a petulant child, locking himself in a room at one point after he doesn't get his way. After reconciling with God however, Lucifer is more friendly towards the Winchesters and his father, even attacking Amara in an attempt to save God when he was under attack. However, once God leaves with Amara to work out their family issues, Lucifer feels abandoned once again and begins to take out his anger on humanity, forgoing an Apocalypse, instead wishing to spite God by "breaking his toys."
After taking President Jefferson Rooney as a vessel, Lucifer soon gets the idea to become a father by the president's mistress Kelly Kline, and creates a Nephilim during one of their sexual encounters. After being trapped in Apocalypse World and the majority of the his grace taken by Michael for a spell to open a rift. Lucifer begins dealing with human emotions for the first time in his existence, and admits to his wanting to be accepted by God and the angels and his worry about being a father, and failing at that. Lucifer then appears to go through an existential crisis when he is granted rulership over the angels in Heaven, and attempts to be the "new God" and help humanity, his attempts which end in failure, before abandoning his post and entering a state of despondence at his place in the universe.
Once Lucifer finally meets his son, Jack, he genuinely appears to want to change and be the father Jack wants him to be. Going so far as to shed a tear when Gabriel tells him he will never change and Jack will see him for what he really is. Lucifer attempts at change were short lived, and once Jack learns of his enjoyment in the brutal murder of Maggie disowns his father as a "monster", angering Lucifer who shows his true colors to his son, and steal's Jack's grace telling his child he only needed his power.

Demons want to free Lucifer so that he will lead them, and take over the Earth. Ruby tells Sam Winchester that, in an act of defiance, Lucifer created the first demon by corrupting a human soul: Lilith. The demons' plan is set in motion in 1972, when Azazel manages to speak to Lucifer through the door of the Cage, which opens at St. Mary's Convent, in Ilchester, Maryland. According to Ruby, Lilith is the only one who can break the final seal and free Lucifer.

Alone with Michael and Gabriel's corpse, Lucifer offers a deal to Michael where he will help Michael reach the Main Universe. ===13.23 Let the Good Times Roll===
:"I can murder you both and end all life in the universe. Remake it in my image, better than Dad ever could. I'm thinkin' mmm... fire-breathing dragons, sassy talking robots. I might give humans another chance if they know their place and worship me, 'cause I've earned it. But hey, it'll probably take a few days to unravel the universe, Maybe, uh, 7, 10 days tops. So maybe, just maybe, one of you could stop me. Maybe."
Lucifer appears in the forest near the Men of Letters Bunker where Jack is berating himself over all the people he has hurt. Lucifer brushes off questions of how he has returned and states that he has returned for Jack. He tells Jack that Sam lied about his death, but that he does not to blame Sam for trapping him, considering the things he has done to him over the years. Lucifer suggests that he and Jack leave Earth together, but Jack asks that Lucifer resurrect Maggie first. Lucifer reluctantly returns to the Bunker and resurrects Maggie, departing with Jack afterwards.

In the forest at night, Lucifer continues to entice Jack to join him in going out into the stars when Jack receives a prayer from Sam that they are in danger. Jack returns to the Bunker in time to save the Winchesters and severely tortures Michael. In the process, Michael reveals his deal with Lucifer. Having learned that Maggie saw her killer's glowing red eyes, Sam reveals Lucifer as Maggie's killer to Jack. Jack forces Lucifer to admit that he was spotted by Maggie while scouting out the Bunker causing Jack to turn on his father, effectively disowning him. Realizing he has lost Jack, Lucifer tells his son if he can't have him as his son, he only needs Jack's power. Lucifer produces an archangel blade from his sleeve and opens a slit in Jack's neck and absorbs the majority of his grace, leaving Jack temporarily powerless. As Lucifer teleports away with Jack, Sam grabs on and is teleported with them to a church.

Now more powerful than ever, Lucifer gloats over his plans to take over the universe and remake it as he wants. Drawing his archangel blade, Lucifer demands that Jack and Sam fight to the death, suggesting that he will let the victor survive and they will have seven to ten days to find a way to stop him before he destroys everything. Though Sam orders Jack to kill him, Jack chooses to commit suicide to allow Sam to continue on. As Jack starts stabbing himself, Dean arrives, now the vessel of Michael, but with Dean in control. Lucifer surprised that Dean let Michael, learns that Dean and Michael have something in common that they both want to "gut his ass." Dean is able to kick Lucifer across the church and the two engage in battle, throwing each other all over the church and fighting in mid-air. However, Lucifer proves to be the stronger and begins to beat Dean in mid-air, taunting that Dean gave it a good try and explains that he no longer needs a blade to kill him and Michael because of his bolstered grace. As Lucifer begins smiting Dean, Sam tosses Michael's archangel blade to him. Dean stabs Lucifer in the heart with the blade, causing him to drop Dean. Still floating in mid-air with a bright red light emanating from his vessel, fire pours from Lucifer's eyes and wound as he screams in horrific agony before dropping dead to the floor in a final flash of light, his corpse surrounded by his burned wings. Shortly afterwards, as the Winchesters and Jack celebrate Lucifer's death, Michael reneges on his deal with Dean by taking control of his meatsuit and disappears.
