Neat Facts

• Sam has never gone an episode to date without wearing a jacket or hoodie at least once.

• Dean's only jacket-less episode was Shadows; in which he wore no jacket but had a green button-down shirt worn like one.

• Dean does not own a single shirt with any kind of design on it.

• Sam owns three shirts with some kind of design and a fourth which might have one.

• Sam and Dean will frequently go several "days" (In a single episode) either without changing their clothes or changing them only slightly (Swapping out one overshirt for another or the like).

• If you look closely in Sam's close-ups you can see that he almost always has a white undershirt on underneath whatever he's wearing.

• Dean doesn't own a single white shirt (That we have seen to date).

• Dean wears his brown leather jacket with the collar up, just like we see John wearing his brown leather in the Something Wicked flashback.

• Dean often pushes up the sleeves of whatever shirts he is wearing to his elbows, also like we see John doing. Curiously Sam does not seem to share this trait.

• Despite Sam's propensity to pack on the layers (Up to four at a time) when he and Dean are in their room(s) Sam tends to wear only one or two layers.

• Neither Sam nor Dean appear to have any holsters for their guns.

• Sam owns thirty-six pieces of major clothing (Belts, underwear, shoes and other such things not included). Almost twice as many Dean, who only owns nineteen pieces of major clothing (Belts, underwear, shoes and other such things not included).

Laundry (how often and how much)

The first thing we must look at is the most important question: What do they wear while doing their laundry?

Canonically speaking neither of our boys own shorts. Dean owns a pair of jockeys though and if it weren't for that whole thing from Skin (And the lack of places to hide his weapons) I don't think he would mind sitting in a public laundry mat in his underwear. But for the sake of this we're going to assume that Dean doesn't want to have someone call the cops on him and so he actually wears clothes to the laundry mats. Sam? Wears tighty-whities (As is proved twice with glimpses) and would probably not be up for sitting in public in them, what with the whole "Sammy's a big prude/Sam wears baggy clothes" thing.

So whoever does laundry will be wearing pants. Both boys only own two pairs of pants each, which only causes a minor problem. Sam seems to favor his holey pants while Dean seems to favor the un-holey pants. So it would be safe to assume that Sam would wear the unholey pants while washing all his other clothing and that Dean would wear his holey pants while washing.

Now keep in mind that it doesn't take two people to do laundry. So theoretically Sam could hop in the shower and Dean could gather up all the clothes and go and wash them (Because he would totally leave Sam naked in the room with nothing to wear at all); as long as Sam stays in the room or has a towel or a blanket or something he's fine. Winchesters are all about the layers so when Dean washes he's gonna be wearing a t-shirt and a button-down, paired with the holey pants of course. Sam's back at the room in the shower so now we know how much Dean has to wash.

Sam and Dean have fifty-five things to wash, fifty-two when you take into account what Dean is wearing. After doing a quick count and run-down I've decided that Dean will need three washers and three dryers to do all their fifty-two items. I've done the math (Honestly, I have) and there are two different and feasible ways to get everything in three washers/dryers.

Washers that I've seen range from .75 to $1.75 and dryers I've seen have ranged from $1 to $2. So that's $5.25 for washing/drying at the cheapest and $11.25 for washing/drying at the most expensive (Again; that's I've seen).

So that takes care of how much they spend. Now we need to know how often they spend it.

Ignore the jackets and hoodies for the count; they can stand longer than everything else without washes.

Dean wears a button-down over a t-shirt fifty-six times in season one. He wears just a t-shirt once (In bed doesn't count) and long-sleeved shirts twice. Every other time he has a button-down over a t-shirt.

Lets say Dean wears shirts about five times before washing them. With his t-shirts that gives us twenty days. Add in the long-sleeved shirts and we've got ourselves up to thirty days. Dean has eight button-down shirts which, divided evenly, can be worn three or four times a piece in that month between washings.

All of this is of course playing on the thought that Dean doesn't play favorites with his clothes; which this entire post proves is not the case.

It's more likely that in that month Dean will wear his light gray tee eight times, the dark gray tee nine times and the black tee ten times. He'll probably wear each long-sleeved shirt once and have a random day where he'll mix things up. Of those twenty-seven days he wears tee's he'll probably wear his olive button-down eight times, the dark blue seven times, the maroon six times, the denim three times, the green twice and the khaki once. Of those thirty days he'll probably wear his blue jacket sixteen days and his leather jacket fourteen.

What does this mean?

A) I have too much time on my hands;

B) The boys can go a month or so without washing;

C) Dean is a smelly boy.
