History

Kelly Kline was an aide to President Jefferson Rooney. At some point in time, the two began an intimate relationship after the death of Rooney's wife. After Rooney is possessed by Lucifer, she becomes pregnant with his child – a Nephilim named Jack.

12.08 LOTUS

After the sudden death of a Secret Service agent, Kelly reminds the newly Lucifer-inhabited President Jefferson Rooney that he should lead them in prayer, like he always does every morning. When Lucifer obliges, Kelly and the rest of the staff get on their knees and pray along.

The next day after a briefing, Kelly informs Lucifer that he (as Jefferson Rooney) is officially the most popular sitting president, according to a recent poll. While Lucifer is impressed by the news, Kelly tells the Secret Service agent watching them to take a break. When Lucifer asks Kelly if there was anything else, the two end up having sex. Post-coital, Lucifer learns from Kelly that they have been having an affair for sometime now, with Kelly telling him how she hopes one day they could be a couple in public. She wants for them someday to get married and have a child, remarking that Jefferson would make a good father. Later that night, after having sex once again, Kelly remarks that something was different, that she feels something has changed.

After finding that a Nephilim has come into existence, Crowley is able to learn of Kelly's relationship with President Rooney through his contacts. As Kelly finds out she has become pregnant, Crowley teleports to the presidential retreat and whisks Kelly away back to Sam and Dean's motel room. They try to explain the situation to her, which she finds hard to believe. They tell her that they know of her pregnancy and that the child is Lucifer's. When she still does not believe what she is being told, Castiel tells her that her child is an abomination and has her place her hand on a Bible, which is set aflame upon her touching it. Kelly, finally believing what is going on, agrees to help them lure Lucifer to the motel room in order to remove him from President Rooney.

As Lucifer arrives, he has the Secret Service go through and sweep the motel. When an agent finds Castiel in the closet, the angel touches his head and tells him there is no one in the room other than Kelly, and to wait in the car. After being given the all-clear Lucifer enters the motel room, where Kelly tells him that she can't keep their child. Angry, Lucifer begins choking Kelly until Sam bursts into the room and uses the Hyperbolic Pulse Generator on Lucifer. After Lucifer is expelled President Rooney, Kelly in tears begins calling out to him. Sam and Dean have Castiel take her away while they check on the president. Sometime later, at a diner, Kelly excuses herself to the bathroom, but while Castiel is not looking, she sneaks out the back entrance and calls a taxi. By the time Castiel realizes she is gone, Kelly is already down the road. She calls him from the cab to tell him that she can't get rid of the baby. She says she can feel it inside of her and that she is still its mother, before hanging up.

12.13 Family Feud

At a diner in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Kelly orders an orange juice from a waitress, who talks to her about her pregnancy. After taking Kelly's order, the waitress walks away from her booth, her eyes glowing an angelic blue.

Later that night, Kelly is walking down a street. She looks back to see a man walking behind her, prompting her to begin walking faster and duck behind a building. She looks around the corner to see nothing, but as she sighs in relief the man reappears. She runs into an alley only to find the waitress blocking her escape, an angel blade drawn. Dagon quickly appears and orders the angels to get away from Kelly; when the male angel disregards her and attempts to attack, Dagon kills the angels with ease. After being taken to safety a startled Kelly questions what happened; Dagon explains that she is a demon and those were angels trying to kill Kelly. Dagon says that she has come to help her and her unborn child because he could save everyone. She convinces Kelly to take Dagon as her protector.

12.17 The British Invasion

"Yeah, I know. You think I wanted this to happen? He used me. But I love this child."

At their safe house, Kelly is lying on the couch in discomfort as Dagon brings her some food and drink. Kelly remarks she is feeling pains and demands to see a doctor, against Dagon's protests that she is fine. At the doctor's office, Kelly is told her test came back fine. The doctor seems to notice something in her sonogram but is compelled by Dagon to tell Kelly everything is fine.

Back at the apartment, Kelly is on the phone with Dagon telling her what vitamins and supplements she needs. She then receives a phone call from Sam, impersonating a doctor, asking Kelly to come back to the the office to go over some issues with her test results. As Kelly is walking towards the doctor’s office, Dean falls in alongside her, grabbing her arm and pulling her into the Impala. They drive to the junkyard where Sam, Eileen Leahy, Mick Davies, and Renny Rawlings are waiting. As Sam tries to explain how they are trying to help her, Kelly continues showing trepidation. When Renny pulls out his gun, Kelly realizes Dagon has found them. Dagon thrusts her hands in the air and Sam, Dean, Eileen, Mick, and Renny are flung away, landing heavily. Dean and Mick try shooting Dagon but bullets don’t slow her down. She throws them aside again and walks up to Kelly, takes her by the hand, and begins to walk away. Eileen fires the Colt, just as Dagon disappears, taking Kelly with her and leaving Renny to take the hit.

Back at the apartment, Dagon handcuffs Kelly to the bed. When Kelly questions this, Dagon tells her she can't be trusted after being taken by the Winchesters. Kelly responds that she was worried abut her child, but Dagon bluntly tells her that birthing a Nephilim is invariably fatal for the mother.

Kelly takes her life in an attempt to spare the world the possible destruction from her child's birth.

12.19 The Future

At a new safe house, Dagon attempts to give Kelly her vitamins but Kelly slaps them away, so Dagon force-feeds them to her. Realizing there is nothing for her to do, after Dagon leaves Kelly draws a bath and slits her wrists. However, the power of the Nephilim resurrects and heals her wounds. When Dagon returns to the basement, finding a pool of blood by the tub, she questions what Kelly did, only to have Kelly tell her "He wouldn't let me die."

As Kelly is sleeping the basement, Castiel, Kelvin, and Hozai infiltrate the house to kill Dagon and Kelly. As Dagon fights with Kelvin, Castiel goes to the basement to deal with Kelly, but is unable to kill her, instead stealing her away. As they are driving down the road Kelly questions why Castiel didn't kill her, but Castiel only tells her is trying to get as much distance from Dagon as possible.

The next morning Castiel tells Kelly the new plan is to take her to the sandbox portal where she and her child will die, with their souls ascending to Heaven once passing through. When the truck stalls, Castiel books a room at a nearby motel. In the room Kelly explains that her child's power surged through her and showed her that he is good and can do good in the world. When Kelly offers to let Castiel feel her belly, she is shown a vision of Castiel saving her and the child from Dagon at the sandbox.

Sometime later Sam and Dean track Kelly and Castiel to the motel and try to explain to Kelly their plan to extract the grace from the fetus, rendering the Nephilim human. Kelly refuses, telling them they would be taking the one thing that makes the child special. Sam and Dean suggest Castiel and Kelly come back to the Bunker where they can discuss their options. As Kelly and Castiel wait in the Impala while Sam and Dean discuss what they are going to do, Kelly takes the keys and speeds off. When Castiel questions what she is doing, Kelly tells her she is taking them to the sandbox; she tells him the child showed her that if she followed his plan, he would make sure he was born. She tells Castiel that they were chosen for something great, a belief that he doesn't reciprocate.

Later that night when they arrive at the playground, Joshua greets the two at the sandbox, but is immediately killed by Dagon. As Castiel fights with Dagon, Sam and Dean arrive but are quickly incapacitated. A bloody and beaten Castiel stands next to Kelly, who takes his hand, causing him to be given a surge of the Nephilim's power which allows him to easily stop Dagon from striking him and instantly immolate her body, killing her. Castiel tells Sam and Dean that Kelly's child must be born. When Sam and Dean try to stop them, Castiel knocks them out and takes Kelly to the truck where he tells her the Nephilim showed him the future before they drive away.

12.23 All Along the Watchtower

Kelly Kline sits on the floor, looking upward and asking God for help. A man named Sven responds to her, telling her he is trying to help her. Kelly, frustrated that she is having trouble building the crib for her son Jack, tosses the phone aside in exasperation. Castiel enters the room telling Kelly that he would build the crib, and that she needs rest. Kelly vents to Castiel that she can't rest because she doesn't know how much time she has left. She laments that she won't be around for her child and that if she can do one thing for him, it will be to build his crib. Castiel goes on to assure her that he will give his life to protect Jack.

Later, Castiel and Kelly are unloading multiple large boxes of diapers from Castiel's truck at the lake house. Kelly clutches her stomach and braces herself on the truck bed for a moment. Castiel helps her into the house, but unbeknownst to them, her hand leaves behind golden glowing energy on the truck, which floats off and around to the back of the cottage, where it causes a tear in space and time. Inside Jack's nursery, Kelly makes a video telling Jack how much she loves him and that he will have an angel watching over him. Kelly stands up and gasps in pain, clutching at her stomach. Outside, the golden rift throbs, growing brighter in time with Kelly's contraction.

Kelly begins wandering from room to room looking for Castiel. When she finds him, she tells him she thinks that it's almost time as she has another contraction. Later that night Kelly is lying in bed while Castiel assures her she is alright, explaining that her "pressure waves" are still far apart and that he took doula classes online in preparation for the labor. As Kelly has another contraction, she asks Castiel to tell her what he saw again; he tells her he saw the world her son would create and that it would be paradise which alleviates some of her pain.

The Winchesters arrive, and as Sam and Dean talk with Castiel, Mary goes to check on Kelly upstairs. As Kelly's contractions come closer together, Mary tells her it is almost time. When Mary asks her how she is doing, Kelly tells her she is dying, but is okay with dying for her son. She asks Mary if she would do the same thing for her sons. As Kelly has another contraction, Mary holds her hand and assures her she is okay. Castiel enters the room and asks to speak with Kelly in private; Mary leaves the two to talk. At the end of their conversation Castiel tells Kelly not to worry, stands up, and kisses the top of Kelly's head.

As Kelly is about to give birth to Jack, she begins to glow. After telling Jack she loves him, an explosion of golden light knocks Mary across the room. Outside, Sam notices a light coming from Kelly's room and goes to investigate. Sam finds Kelly's body in bed, with a serene look on her face. He closes her eyes.

13.01 Lost and Found

As Jack is being questioned by Sheriff Christine Barker, he sees Kelly's face in a flash, and tells the sheriff that his mother is in Heaven. While in a holding cell, Jack explains to Sam that he had a deep connection with his mother in the womb, that through her he learned how to speak the English language and that Castiel would be his protector.

In the aftermath of the fight with the angels, Sam, Dean, and Jack go to the lake house to give Castiel and Kelly a funeral pyre. Sam and Jack go upstairs and prepare Kelly's body for the pyre. Jack looks mournfully at his mother's body, placing his hand on one of her feet. Kelly's body is placed on the funeral pyre alongside Castiel and is set ablaze.

13.03 Patience

Sam gives Jack the flashdrive containing Kelly's message to him. As Jack watches the video Kelly made, she tells Jack not to let anyone tell him what kind of person he is going to be -- not fate, not her, not his father. Only he can choose his own path, she says, telling him he will be amazing and that an angel is watching over him.

13.04 The Big Empty

To help Jack get some closure, grief counselor / shapeshifter Mia Vallens changes herself into Kelly Kline to comfort Jack. He tells her that he has hurt people when he doesn't want to and is unsure of himself being good. Mia tells him that only thing that matters is what he does, rather than who or what he is, stating that even monsters can do good in this world.

13.06 Tombstone

While staying at the Stampede Motel in Dodge City, Kansas, Jack tells Castiel that he understands why his mother trusted him and that Kelly went to Heaven after she died. Castiel tells Jack that Kelly was a brave woman who believed that he would change the world for the better and that if she saw him now that she would be proud of him.

13.22 Exodus

Jack experiences flashbacks to the video Kelly left for him. In them, Kelly said that she wishes that she could see him grow up and that no one would blame him if he went looking for his father.

14.02 Gods and Monsters

Jack pays a visit to Kelly's parents and his maternal grandparents -- Mr. and Mrs. Kline. He tells them that she had a baby boy which happily excites them. Mrs. Kline shows Jack a scrapbook with pictures of Kelly, including one of her riding a horse, after remarking to her husband Jack's resemblance to Kelly. Jack tells them that Kelly told "her son" that who he's supposed to be is who he chooses to be rather than what others believe him to be. While the Klines believe that Kelly's governmental duties have kept her from contacting them, Jack doesn't have the heart to tell them that she died in childbirth or that he's their grandson.

14.08 Byzantium

After dying and going to Heaven, Jack travels to Kelly's personal Heaven to meet his mother. There, Jack finds Kelly in a memory of playing with her dog Roosevelt as a child. After Jack introduces himself as her son, Kelly transforms into her adult self and embraces her son for the first time. Kelly is confused as she remembers Roosevelt dying when she in high school, leading Jack to explain that she is in Heaven and in her past memories. Kelly remembers that she died giving birth to Jack and realizes that he is dead too. Jack reassures an angry Kelly that Castiel, Sam, and Dean did their best to take care of him, but that things didn't go as planned and he needed to make sure she is okay. Kelly quickly realizes that something is wrong. Jack explains to Kelly about the dark force chasing him and they take cover in the house as they catch up.

Later, Jack notices something coming and orders Kelly to run while he distracts it, but Kelly refuses to leave her son's side. To their surprise, Kelly and Jack are greeted by Castiel. Kelly shares a warm hug with her old friend and assures him that he didn't fail her as Jack is wonderful. Castiel explains that they have found a way to bring Jack home, relieving Kelly until Castiel explains that they will need to use magic that draws on Jack's soul to heal him. After learning that it will use up a small piece of Jack's soul in the process, Kelly becomes worried, forcing Castiel to explain that the Entity has invaded Heaven to take Jack to the Empty. If Jack is alive again, the Entity will leave Heaven and the angels alone.

At the moment, they are interrupted by the Entity, who has taken over the angel Dumah and wishes to take Jack with it back to the Empty. Though obviously scared, Kelly stands between her son and the Entity, glaring angrily at the being. As the Entity beats on Castiel, Kelly steps forward in his defense, only to be struck to the ground by the being. As Castiel makes a deal with the entity to trade himself for Jack, Kelly holds her son and watches in surprise, but doesn't otherwise intervene.

After the entity is gone, Castiel explains that he did it because he made a promise, looking at Kelly, who smiles at Castiel, and because he loves Jack. Even though Jack feels that he didn't get enough time with Kelly, she tells her son to go and have a great life and she will be waiting for Jack when he returns someday. Kelly hugs Jack and expresses her love for her son before stepping back. Wiping away tears, Kelly smiles as she watches Castiel resurrect Jack.
