John Winchester was Sam and Dean's father, and husband to Mary Winchester.

John was born in Normal, Illinois, to Millie and Henry Winchester. Henry was a member of the Men of Letters, who intended to induct John into the order when he was old enough. However, when John was four, his father disappeared. John thought Henry had simply left, never knowing that his father had fled through time to escape the grasp of the Knight of Hell, Abaddon, who later killed him in the 21st century. This left John with a deep resentment -- in Dean's words "he hated the man." Nothing is known of John's mother Millie. John described himself as "a mechanic from a family of mechanics" and when he is an adult there is someone in his life who an acquaintance refers to as "his old man." There may have been mechanics on his mother's side, and possibly Millie re-partnered or the "old man" was John's maternal grandfather.
After returning to Lawrence, Kansas, from the Vietnam War where he served as a marine, John worked as a mechanic and was eventually co-owner (with Mike Guenther) of a garage. On March 23, 1972 after seeing the film Slaughterhouse-Five, Mary Campbell bumped into John Winchester, knocking him down. While Mary was embarrassed, John simply laughed it off, and Mary Campbell did not initially told her she could get along when they methim a cup coffee to make it up to him. HoweverThe two would go to Mulroney's Diner and talk. When John asked for Mary's number, she gave it to him, despite knowing her father wouldn't approve. Heaven was also interested in bringing together the lines of hunters and Men of Letters, and so a cherub intervened, causing the two to fall in love. John and Mary's marriage was not always happy, and at least once he moved out of the family home.
In 1973, as John went to a car yard to purchase a beige VW van but was persuaded by Dean, who had come from the future, to get the Impala instead. Soon after John was about to propose to Mary when Azazel killed him. Mary made a deal with Azazel for John's life, in exchange for a promise to allow Azazel into her home in ten years' time. After John's resurrection, the two married in Reno on August 19, 1975, at Mary's instigation.
After Sam chose to leave the family and hunting and attend Stanford, John cut off contact with him, although he regularly visited Palo Alto to check up on him. John and Dean continued hunting together, with Dean also going on hunts on his own as he got older. Around this time John and Bobby had a falling out -- Dean comments that the last time Bobby saw John he nearly "filled him with buckshot."

In 2003, John ends up in 2019 after Dean uses a Baozhu to grant "what his heart desires," hoping it will remove Michael, who is trapped in his mind. John gets a chance to reunite with Mary, and reconcile with Sam and Dean. However John being in 2019 is tampering with the timeline, so they destroy the pearl and send John back to 2003, where he wakes with no memory of what has happened.
In 2005, John got a lead on the demon that was responsible for Mary's death, and he left Dean in order to pursue it. He tried to keep both Sam and Dean at a distance in order to protect them, even refusing to respond when Dean called him when he and Sam returned to Lawrence in response to Sam's visions or when Sam called to tell him Dean was dying.
Following a car crash caused by a demon, John offered his own life and the Colt to Azazel to save Dean. John revealed that he had known the "truth" about Sam all along. Before he died, John warned Dean that he may have to kill Sam if he couldn't save him.
Due to his deal with Azazel, when John Winchester died he was sent to Hell, where over the next ten months (equivalent of a hundred years) he was tortured by Alastair. Alastair later told Dean that John never "broke" -- that is, he never gave in to Alastair's temptation to protect himself by torturing others. Dean, by contrast, gave in after three months (equivalent of thirty years) of torture, thus breaking the first of the 66 Seals to free Lucifer that required that a righteous man shedding blood in Hell. When the Devil's Gate in Wyoming was opened, he was one of the spirits who managed to escape and helped Dean kill Azazel by ripping him out of his meatsuit, distracting him long enough for his son to reclaim the Colt and shoot Azazel in his heart after he returns to his meatsuit. After sharing one last tearful moment with his sons, John's spirit passes on to Heaven.
Middle name
When Sam and Dean encounter Meg in Chicago and realize she is linked to the demon that killed Mary and Jess, Dean calls John. He later arrives and Dean embraces him warmly. John reveals that Meg was trying to kill him because he is hunting the demon with the intention of killing it, something he isn't sure is possible but which he is determined to try. Just as he reunites for the first time in years with Sam, greeting him warmly and showing some regret that it has been so long, they are attacked by daevas and are nearly killed before Sam manages to dispel them with flares. Afterward, Dean supports John when he says it is too dangerous for them all to be together, and they part with John promising that the fight is just beginning and that they will be a part of it.

1.18 Something Wicked
Dean reveals to Sam that in 1989 when John was hunting a shtriga, he left Dean and Sam alone. When the shtriga attacked Sam, John returned just in time to save him. In the present, John sends them the coordinates to Fitchburg, Wisconsin, knowing the shtriga is there and that killing it is unfinished business for Dean.
11.04 Baby
While driving to Quaker Valley, Oregon, to check out a possible case, believing Sam to be exhausted, Dean tells him to get in the back and get some rest. Suddenly Sam is awakened by Judy Collins's "Someday Soon" playing on the radio. He asks Dean what he's listening to, only to find the younger version of John Winchester in the driver's seat. Sam believes he's having another vision. John says he is only here to deliver a message -- that the Darkness is coming and only the boys can stop it. Sam insists that there should be a way to stop the Darkness and that John needs to tell him, but John only answers, “God helps those who help themselves.” Sam asks John one last question before he wakes up: “Who are you?”

After waking up, Sam tells Dean about the dream and his belief that it was someone masquerading as John to deliver a message. When Sam points out that John told him everything he wanted to hear, Dean agrees that that didn't sound like their father at all, but brushes off Sam's claims that it could be God responding to his prayer. Dean admits that he dreams about their father all the time, usually a dream where John is teaching Dean how to drive when he's sixteen, not a young boy as when John actually taught him, with Sam in the back seat and John telling him "perfect landing son" when they get home. The dream, which Dean has every couple of months, is something that he finds comforting. Sam says he usually has the same type of dream about their mother - a dream of a normal life with their parents.

When Dean uses the Baozhu and wishes for his heart's desire, he inadvertently summons John Winchester from 2003. After attacking and overpowering his sons, they talk about everything that's happened since his death: how they saved the world multiple times, discovered the truth about the Men of Letters from their grandfather, and live in the Bunker with Castiel and Jack. John also sees Mary for the first time since her death in 1983.
While he looks through the lore books, John also talks with Sam about their fight the night Sam left for Stanford. Sam tells John that while he thinks about him a lot, he never thinks about their fights. Sam felt bad about how he never got to say goodbye before finding John on the floor in the hospital. However, Sam acknowledges that John did the best he could for them.
Later, they discover that they tampered with time by pulling John from the past. The consequences include Sam never getting back into the hunting life, Dean being wanted for $100,000 on multiple charges, Mary never being brought back to life by Amara, presumably Jack never being born, and Castiel never meeting the Winchesters. They realize that they need to send John back to 2003 to correct the past. Sam, Dean, and Mary are hesitant, but John accepts that he has to go back. John also tells Dean that he never meant for his sons to have to live the hunter life as it was supposed to end between Yellow Eyes and him. He wanted Dean to have a normal life and have a family of his own, but Dean acknowledges that he already has a family. After sharing their first meal as a family, they gather around for one last tearful goodbye. As John holds Mary's hand, Sam smashes the Baozhu, sending John back to 2003.
As John wakes up in the Impala back in 2003, he gets a call from Dean. He tells Dean that he had "one hell of a dream" implying he remembered everything and that he will see Dean soon. ===14.18 Absence===After Mary is accidentally killed by Jack, Dumah allows Castiel to see her special Heaven, where Mary is at peace and reunited with John. During Mary's hunter's funeral, John appears in a flashback to 14.13 Lebanon. ===14.19 Jack in the Box===After Castiel tries to get to Jack Kline, Dumah threatens to end John and Mary's shared Heaven with a snap of her fingers if Castiel doesn't do as she says. In retaliation and to protect John and Mary, Castiel instantly kills Dumah with his angel blade, ensuring their safety. ===15.20 Carry On===After Dean dies and arrives in Heaven, he is met by Bobby, who tells him that all the walls have been taken down by Jack and Heaven is everyone happy and together. He notes that John and Mary have a place "over yonder."

right|thumb|John's dog tags.
In 2.09 Croatoan, Dean says that John was a Corporal in the Marine Corps, with company 'Echo 2/1' (2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, Echo company). Sam reiterates this to Stan Thompson in 8.08 Hunteri Heroici.
