Appearances

1.01 Pilot

It is Halloween and Jess is dressed up in a sexy nurse costume and goes out for drinks with her boyfriend Sam, to celebrate his good LSAT score which should guarantee him a place in law school. Later that night, she wakes to find Sam talking to his brother Dean in the livng room. The brothers haven’t spoken for some time, and Dean has only turned up because their father has gone missing on what Dean calls a ‘hunting’ trip. Sam leaves to help Dean, promising to return by Sunday night. When Sam returns he grabs a cookie from the kitchen. He lies down on his bed, and opens his eyes to find Jessica, eviscerated, and burning on the ceiling.

1.02 Wendigo

Sam has a nightmare where he is putting flowers on Jess' grave, and her hand reaches up from the earth and grabs him.

Jess and Sam engaged in the Wish Verse

1.05 Bloody Mary

Sam appears to see Jess on the street, in a long white nightgown. It was unclear if this was a vision or a memory.

1.09 Home

Sam reveals to Dean that he had visions of Jess' death weeks before she died.

1.22 Devil's Trap

The Yellow-Eyed Demon mentions that Sam was shopping for engagement rings and intended to marry Jess.

2.20 What Is and What Should Never Be

In Dean's Wish Verse induced by the Djinn, Jess and Sam are engaged.

2.21 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One

Azazel confirms to Sam that he was responsible for the death of his mother and Jess.

Azazel: The cost of doing business, I’m afraid. I mean, sweet little Jessica –- she just had to die. You were all set to marry that little blonde thing, become a tax lawyer with two kids, a beer gut, and a little McMansion in the suburbs. I needed you sharp on the road, honing your skills. Your gifts.
Lucifer appearing to Sam as Jess

5.03 Free To Be You And Me

Lucifer appears as Jess in a dream to Sam, trying to convince him that he will never change, and that those close to him will continue to die (An alternate explanation is that Jess is part of Sam's subconscious, ie a dream, which Lucifer then invades.)

5.20 The Devil You Know

It is revealed that the demon Brady introduced Sam to Jess. Azazel was concerned that Sam was losing his potential and so Brady introduced Sam to Jess with the plan that her death would drive Sam back to hunting. It was Brady who killed Jess, on Azazel's instructions. Clearly his instructions were to make it appear as though Azazel killed her so Sam would recognize the death scene and continue hunting to get revenge.

Notes

  • The studio bosses wanted Eric Kripke to write Jessica as an ongoing character, but Eric just thought it wouldn't work, and he suggested to kill her off, which they liked. Then the studio urged Kripke to make Jessica an evil demon character, who was planted into Sam's life with purpose, and whose betrayal drives him on the road as he realizes, demons are closer to him than he thought.S1Com, p. 13

Trivia

  • Jess shares a birthday with Dean: she was born January 24, 1984 (a couple of months after Mary's death). In an interview Kripke said The reason for this was "...not a creepy, mythology, conspiracy reason. January 24 is my wife's birthday, and it's kinda my valentine to her."
