Supernatural’s Car Summoner Speaks

We wanted to know more about the 1967 Chevy Impala featured on Supernatural—and in this month’s crate—so we asked the show’s vehicle coordinator, Jeff Budnick, to answer a few of our most pressing questions.

Q: Supernatural has been around for a long time—how many Impalas have you had to find for the show?
A: We have nine in total: three heroes, three stunts, two wrecks and a break-away shell. Also just purchased another for parts. I found them all except the original two from the pilot.

Q: Is there any demon-hunting significance to a 1967 Chevy Impala? Or was it just the right car at the right time?
A: No, none whatsoever, the show made it into what it is today.

Q: If you were a demon hunter, what car would you choose to drive?
A: I like the black 70 Charger we used in previous episodes.

Q: How did you get into the business of finding cool cars for TV?
A: I am a car collector/restorer and the TV show The X-Files found me—and then I was hooked.

Q: What’s your favorite car, ever?
A: Hard to say as I own all my favorite cars already! The only car that I would really like to add to my collection is a Ford GT40.

Q: Do you consider the Impala to be the most important object in pretty much the whole universe?
A: No, in the end family is first, then cars!

Q: How many times have you listened to “Carry On My Wayward Son”?
A: Too many times!

Q: If the Impala were to challenge Stephen King’s “Christine” (a Plymouth Fury) in a demolition duel, which car would win?
A: The Fury would as it’s built like a tank – but would hate to find out.

Q: Some of our readers might not know that you’re in a band with several other members of the Supernatural crew called The Impalas. Is there anything new planned for the group this year?
A: We usually play the wrap parties and there has been some talk of maybe a convention one day.
