The Harry Potter franchise tells the story of a young wizard called Harry Potter and his friends who go to a wizarding school called Hogwarts, who must battle an evil wizard called Voldemort. The books by J.K. Rowling were published from 1997-2007 and the movies were released between 2001 to 2011. It spurned spinoffs and theme parks and many conventions.

There are only a few Harry Potter references in early seasons of Supernatural. It is not until 7.20 The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo, when Sam is trying to encourage Charlie that we find out Sam is very familiar with the stories. Dean has at least enough knowledge to call Sam "Dumble-dork" - a reference to Hogwarts Principal, Albus Dumbledore and in 15.04 Atomic Monsters, he refers to an owl skull saying "RIP Hedwig".

4.17 It's a Terrible Life

Sam: I dreamt that I saved a Grim Reaper named Tessa from demons.
Ian: Classic! How much D&D did you play when you were a kid? Oh, my—okay, so you—rescuing the Grim Reaper. That's—you're a hero. I mean, thank God we got Harry Potter here to save us all from the apocalypse.

7.20 The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo

  • On her desk at Roman Enterprises, Charlie Bradbury has two Harry Potter and a Dumbledore figurine, as well as Hermione.
  • When she thinks she has first cracked Frank's password Charlie says "That was hardly the Chamber of Secrets". The Chamber of Secrets was created under the Dungeons of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during medieval times
When Charlie loses her nerve before breaking into Dick Roman’s office, Sam gives her a pep talk:

Sam: Who's your favorite Harry Potter character?
Charlie: Hermione.
Sam: Hermione. Well did Hermione run when Sirius Black was in trouble? Or when Voldemort attacked Hogwarts?
Dean: Seriously?
Sam: Shut up.
Charlie: No of course not.
Sam: What did she do?
Charlie: She kicks ass! She practically saves Harry in every book. And then she ends up with the wrong...
Sam: Stay on track. She kicked ass, right? So what are you going to do?
Charlie: Kick it in the ass!
Sam: Good girl.

Dean: (to Sam) Oh, you go, Dumble-dork.

8.11 LARP and the Real Girl

Charlie destroying the spellbook by stabbing it is a reference to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, in which Harry Potter destroys Tom Riddle's diary in a similar manner using a basilisk's fang. Harry Potter is one of Charlie's favorite series.

9.18 Meta Fiction

Ian: We've got some off the menu items, but this ain't Diagon Alley, man.
Diagon Alley is a wizarding alley in the Harry Potter 'verse where students go to buy their supplies for Hogwarts.

10.05 Fan Fiction

The Principal Slazar of St. Alphonso's Academy is named after Salazar Slytherin of the original founders of Hogwarts School of Wizardry from the Harry Potter verse.

11.12 Don't You Forget About Me

Dean: Does that mean you're gonna make her life less hellish?

Claire: I solemnly swear not to hunt like a dumbass.

Claire's response is related to the phrase "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." from the film Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban.

Lord Voldemort, the villain in the Harry Potter series, is commonly referred to as either "He Who Must Not Be Named" or "You Know Who."

Harry Potter in Fandom

The Harry Potter fandom was huge when Supernatural started, and Supernatural fandom (and many others) has been influenced in many ways by its sub-culture. One example is the Big Bang style challenge, which originated as an invitation fanwork challenge based around the pairing of Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, but has come to refer to any challenge featuring long form fanfic paired with fan art.
