Gabriel
,→History
The youngest of the four archangels, Gabriel fought alongside God, Michael, Raphael, and Lucifer to imprison the Darkness rather than eliminating her and causing a disruption in the Cosmic Balance. Gabriel lived in Heaven until Michael and Lucifer's constant fighting over the creation of humanity caused him to seek refuge on Earth. He took an unnamed vessel and hid as a trickster, embracing the lifestyle of a demi-god and meting out "just desserts" to those he felt deserved punishment. During his time on Earth he became a friend to some of the real pagan gods he encountered; they know him as Loki.
He first encounters Dean and Sam Winchester in his guise as the Trickster. He antagonizes them from afar during their investigation, and survives their attempt on his life. A year later the Trickster traps them both in a time loop where Dean dies every Tuesday in different ways. He does this in an attempt to teach Sam that Dean cannot be saved from his deal, and to show him that Dean is his weakness, and his enemies will use this to manipulate him.
It is nearly two years later that Gabriel traps the brothers in an alternate reality made of TV shows, so that they will "learn to play their roles"; he insists that they fulfill their destinies as the vessels for Michael and Lucifer. Sam and Dean start to suspect that the Trickster is more than he appears to be, and when they trap him in a ring of burning holy oil, Gabriel reveals himself. He claims that he does not support either Michael or Lucifer, and that he only wants the fighting to end.
Later he sides with the Winchesters and confronts Lucifer using an illusion of himself as a distraction. Lucifer is able to see past the illusion, and stabs him with his own archangel blade. Despite this, Gabriel is able to leave a message for Sam and Dean on how to use the rings of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to open Lucifer's Cage in order to capture him.
Metatron later uses an illusion of Gabriel to try to convince Castiel to play his role in Metatron's "story." When planning how to beat Amara, the Winchesters discuss the possibility of resurrecting Gabriel with God since it took the four archangels to help God defeat Amara the last time. However, God informs them that Gabriel and Raphael are both beyond his ability to resurrect in a timely manner.
Gabriel is later seen alive and imprisoned in the Needham Asylum where Asmodeus has been extracting his grace to power himself up and torturing him to keep him in line, even sewing his mouth shut. Ketch, who was working for Asmodeus at the time, rebels and rescues Gabriel and takes him, along with his archangel blade and the grace that was extracted from him, to the Men of Letters Bunker. Gabriel is unresponsive and in shock from the unending torture, but he is able to write a message to Sam and Castiel explaining how he is still alive. He reveals that when Lucifer stabbed "Gabriel", he was another illusion used to fake his death while the real Gabriel watched from a distance. After the Apocalypse ended, he retreated to Monte Carlo and shacked up with porn stars and the sons of Loki -- Fenrir Odensbane, Narfi and Sleipnir using his "death" as an opportunity to start fresh without any obligations to God or Heaven. At some point, he was captured and sold to Asmodeus by the real Norse trickster Loki and his sons, where he would be imprisoned under heavy warding and his grace would be periodically extracted rendering him nearly human. After some time under Sam and Castiel's care, Gabriel begins to return to normal, feeding on his extracted grace to power himself up. When the Bunker is attacked by Asmodeus and his demons who came to reclaim him. Gabriel powers up and kills Asmodeus and the demons. Afterwards, he departs, declining to join the Winchesters in saving the world despite their pleas. Gabriel sets out on a personal crusade to eliminate Loki and his sons for selling him to Asmodeus. His battle against Fenrir left him wounded and forced to go to the Winchesters for help. Slepinir and Narfi are able to track him to their motel room and a fight ensues ending with Narfi impaled by Gabriel and Sleipnir narrowly escaping certain death. After telling them his story, Sam and Dean decide to help him get his revenge in exchange for his help battling the forces of Apocalypse World. They head over to the Ophidian Hotel where they confront and kill Sleipnir when Gabriel has a final showdown with Loki in the hallway. After a brief monologue from Loki, Gabriel pins him to the wall and stabs him with his sword, finally exacting his revenge. The Winchesters take him back to the Bunker where they prepare to enter Apocalypse World once Gabriel's grace is rejuvenated. After failing to open a rift, Gabriel and Rowena track down and capture Lucifer. They use his grace to constantly replenish the spell to keep the portal open while they search for Mary Winchester and Jack Kline. Castiel tries to motivate Gabriel to return to Heaven and prevent it from crumbling, but he is initially reluctant as he skipped out. After meeting Floyd and Maggie, they learn how to reach the Human Resistance's encampment in Dayton, Ohio through the Morehead Tunnel which is glutted with feral vampires. They make their way through the tunnel, but Floyd and Sam are both killed by the vampires in the process. Gabriel erases the warding preventing Castiel from entering the encampment and is escorted by resistance fighters along with the rest of the group. Later, Jack berated him and Castiel for not bringing Sam back to life. When Dean and Mary decide to return to the tunnel to recover Sam's body, everyone witnesses a revived Sam enters the encampment with Lucifer who escaped Rowena and brought him back in exchange for facilitating a meeting with his son. Dean commands Gabriel to kill Lucifer, but he's not strong enough to use the archangel blade and the fighting causes Jack to teleport away from the fighting. Later after Lucifer starts to connect with Jack, he officially introduces him to his uncle, Gabriel. Later, when they are at the Singer Salvage Yard, Gabriel and Lucifer get into a heated argument which ends with Gabriel rejecting his brother for corrupting humanity to prove their flaws and exclaiming that it's too late for him to seek redemption. After rescuing Ketch and Charlie, the entire resistance heads out to the rift to make their way to the Winchester's universe. As the fighters pass through the rift, Michael makes his way to their location and kills three resistance fighters upon landing. After disorientating Lucifer, Michael is shocked to see Gabriel with the Winchesters. No longer wanting to run from his family drama anymore, Gabriel decides to face off against Michael to buy everyone else enough time to pass through the rift before it closes. After a while, Michael stabs Gabriel with his archangel blade and rests his corpse on the ground before futilely rushing to the rift which closes, leaving him and Lucifer imprisoned in Apocalypse World. Lucifer decides to make a deal with Michael that if he shows him how to open a rift, he would get his son while Michael gets everything else. He accepts while a look of remorse falls over Lucifer's face as he looks at his dead brother's corpse. While everyone is celebrating in the Bunker, Sam and Dean explain to Castiel of how Gabriel died and that they owe him everything for helping them save the resistance fighters who plan to return home and finally defeat Michael.
