In Christian tradition a fallen angel was one who was banished from Heaven.

Fallen In Supernatural:

Fallen angels are angels that have blatantly disobeyed God and his will, or choose to stop beings angels. Lucifer was cast out of Heaven and was thrown into Hell by his older brother, Michael. When angels fall they may lose some of their angelic powers and abilities; they are also cut-off from Heaven's power.

Fallen Angels are generally held in lower esteem than even demons.

  • Lucifer was cast out of Heaven by Michael, after God commanded him to bow before humanity and he refused. Even after Lucifer's fall, he still has maintained all of his angelic powers.
  • Anna says she "fell" when she voluntarily removed her grace, and became human.

Rebellious In Supernatural:

Difficult to distinguish from fallen angels, rebellious angels are those that decided at one point or another to stop following orders. When an angel questions orders, he or she may experience a demotion from his or her original rank in the angel hierarchy, and would then be placed in a lower angelic class. True rebellion, meaning outright disobedience, is considered an angelic "murder one" according to Anna. It is closely associated with falling, and can occur for a variety of reasons. Three of these include:

1. They might long for their own independence and freedom.

2. They might grow attached to Earthly things.

3. They lack faith in Heaven's orders.

  • Castiel was cut off from heaven following his rebellion, but it is not clear if this means he has "fallen". However, God decided to put Castiel back on The Host of Heaven - Castiel said that God enhanced his powers and gave him the opportunity to be the Keeper of Heaven.
  • Uriel was one of many angels who supported the release of Lucifer, and he wanted to free Alastair so that he could kill Dean.

Voluntary Exile In Supernatural:

  • Gabriel left Heaven voluntarily and hid on Earth as the Trickster. He appears to have maintained his powers in spite of a lack of contact with Heaven.
