In Christian tradition a fallen angel is one who is banished from Heaven.

The term fallen angels describes celestial beings that have involuntarily been cast out of Heaven or have voluntary left the Host to become human. Fallen angels lose their position on the Host, they are no longer capable of communicating with Heaven, and are looked on as being worse than even demons by their brother angels.

*Lucifer was cast out of Heaven by Michael, after God commanded him to bow before humanity and he refused. Even after Lucifer's fall, he continues to exhibit his angelic powers; this may be due to his status as an archangel.

*Anna says she "fell" when she voluntarily removed her grace, and became human. She was later reunited with her grace and her angelic powers were restored, though she remained a fallen angel. Her continued separation from Heaven is evidenced by her difficulty in time traveling shortly before her death at the hands of Michael.5.13 The Song Remains The Same

The main distinguishing factor in which the difference between fallen angels and rebellious angels seems to be this: Fallen angels are angels that have defied Heaven's will to which they later leave the Host permanently, although, Anna, a fallen angel, was later taken back to Heaven for lessons on obedience. Rebellious angels are angels that have strayed from the main course and formulate an individualized agenda. These angels may experience a demotion from his or her original rank in the angel hierarchy, and would then be placed in a lower angelic class. True rebellion, meaning outright disobedience, is considered an angelic "murder one" according to Anna. It is closely associated with falling, and can occur for a variety of reasons.  Three of these include:

1. They might long for their own independence and freedom.

2. They might grow attached to Earthly things.

3. They lack faith in Heaven's orders.

*Castiel is cut off from heaven following his rebellion, but it is not clear if this means he "fell". Like Anna, Castiel's separation from Heaven limited his powers, preventing him from healing Bobby and exorcising demons. In 5.21 Two Minutes To Midnight, Castiel appears virtually human after banishing himself in a previous episode, but again, this has not been discussed in terms of "falling".

*Uriel is one of many angels who supported the release of Lucifer. Uriel's rebellion seems to have been hidden or overlooked by the authorities in Heaven, as he retained his powers while killing many of his comrades in a violent recruitment drive.

*Gabriel left Heaven voluntarily and hid on Earth as the Trickster. Like Lucifer, he appears to have maintained his powers in spite of a lack of contact with Heaven.
