Ed is a self proclaimed ‘professional’ paranormal investigator and co-runner of the website Hell Hound's Lair. His friend, website co-runner, and partner investigator is Harry Spengler. At the end of 1.17 Hell House they receive a phone call from a producer (actually Sam playing a prank on them) and try their luck in L.A.
When they meet up again with Sam and Dean it is by accident when they and their team of "Ghostfacers" enter Morton House on leap day with camera equipment to catch paranormal activity on film.

Ed also appears in the tie-in comic, The Beast With Two Backs.
Ed has a sister, Maggie Zeddmore, who is adopted.
