As he's leaving the 8th Street Sports Lounge in Grants Pass, Oregon with his friend Marshall Todd, Ed encounters [[Eve]]. Ed tried to start a conversation with her, saying "[[Heaven]] must be missing an [[angel]]." Eve touches him on the cheek, and he pales as he is transformed into a [[shapeshifter]]. When he starts feeling ill he visits Dr. Silver, who reports his condition to the Centers for Disease Control. He describes Ed's symptoms as "what seems to be the beginning of the flu. After a day his flesh became what can only be described as gooey." Ed dies, but he has already infected his flat mates who transform, [[shapeshifter]]-like, into copies of Ed before also dying.
