Dustin, with no family of his own, moved in with a man named Randy when he left the Youth Transition Center. Claire joined them soon after. Dustin worked at Wiener Hut to make money for them.

Randy had incurred $5,000 worth of debt and, after Claire fails to find enough cash, Dustin mentions what he and Randy had been discussing—to rob a Gas-N-Sip. He comments that if he had still been under 18 years of age, he would do it himself. Claire agrees to do it.

As Claire is readying herself to rob the convenience store, Dustin turns up for work only to be ambushed by Castiel—with Sam and Dean in tow. They ask if he's Dustin Tate, which he denies until Castiel grabs him by the throat and hauls him up against a nearby wall. This encourages him to tell the truth and his information leads Sam, Dean, and Castiel to the Gas-N-Sip just in time to stop Claire from robbing it.
