Though alcohol is the drug of choice for hunters, some characters in the series are shown turning to marijuana and prescription drugs as their own form of escapism. While no characters are explicitly shown smoking or snorting any illegal substances in the series, Dean especially has a running commentary on drugs, both in joking reference to other characters's paraphernalia and by alluding to his own history with illegal substances.

2.04 Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things

"Are you high?" Sam asks Dean sarcastically, and Dean takes a moment to seriously consider the possibility before Sam moves on.

2.05 Simon Said

In Andy's van, Sam and Dean find a very large piece of drug paraphernalia, which Dean refers to as "Moby Dick's bong."

2.10 Hunted

Laughing, Sam asks where he and Dean are headed next. Dean jokingly suggests Amsterdam, and when Sam objects, Dean responds, "Come on, man! I hear the coffee shops don’t even serve coffee." The coffee shops in Amsteradam do, of course, serve coffee. They also legally serve cannabis.

2.20 What Is and What Should Never Be

In what appears to be an alternate reality in which Mary is still alive, Dean is acting strange. Sam asks what's gotten into Dean that he seems so happy and affectionate towards his family, saying, "I mean this whole warm, fuzzy ecstasy-trip thing." Dean brushes it off as just being happy about Sam's engagement to Jessica, who is also still alive. Later in the episode, Dean struggles to differentiate whether his new reality is in fact a djinn's spell. He theorizes, "Maybe [the djinn] gives us some kind of supernatural acid and then just feeds on us slow." To which (a fake) Sam argues back, "I'm real. This is not an acid trip. I'm real, and that thing is gonna come down here and kill us for real. Now, please—" Because Sam is actually a creation of Dean's wish, both drug references that Sam makes in this episode are actually Dean's own imagining.

2.21 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One

When Sam meets up with Andy Gallagher at Cold Oak, he asks Andy what the last thing he remembered was before waking up there. Andy replies, "My fourth bong load."

3.08 A Very Supernatural Christmas

As Sam and Dean hunt for an "Evil Santa," they follow the Santa from a Christmas village to his home. They enter armed, but find a disheveled "Santa" watching Christmas-themed porn and smoking a large bong with a bottle of liquor in hand.

3.10 Dream a Little Dream of Me

Because of the use of African Dream Root in this episode, there are frequent references to drugs and stoner culture, including Dean agreeing to know what a bad acid trip is like (and then denying it when he remembers he's pretending to be FBI), and the header quote on this page in which Dean references The Dark Side of the Rainbow, typically experienced while high.

4.07 It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester

When Sam and Dean go to interview Don Harding, Dean sees a student named Justin putting a large bong-shaped clay piece into a kiln. "Now that brings back memories," Dean remarks.

4.08 Wishful Thinking

Strange things are happening in the mountain town of Concrete, Washington, including what might be Bigfoot. Sam says that Bigfoot is known even by hunters to be a hoax. Dean answers, "Well, maybe somebody's pumping LSD into the town water supply."

4.09 I Know What You Did Last Summer

Sam is seen taking aspirin (washed down with alcohol) because of the headaches Ruby's training is giving him.

4.10 Heaven and Hell

When Anna tells Dean she can take her grace back in and become an angel again, Dean responds: "So what, you're just gonna take some divine bong hit and Shazam, you're Roma Downey?"

4.12 Criss Angel Is a Douchebag

Dean likens real magic to "crack". "People do surprising things once they get a taste of it."

4.15 Death Takes a Holiday

Sam asks Dean if he wants an aspirin. Later in the episode, Alastair says that the Horsemen of the Apocalypse are "just jonesing for the Apocalypse".

4.17 It's a Terrible Life

Sam and Dean watch an informative Ghostfacers video in which Ed refers to salt as, "Like acid to ghosts." Harry feels the need to correct for clarity's sake that they mean "Burny acid," and Ed agrees, "Not LSD."

4.21 When the Levee Breaks

Throughout the series, Sam's demon blood addiction is referred to using terms traditionally reserved for drug addictions. In this episode, Sam is trapped in Bobby's panic room and forced to go without the demon blood in what Bobby refers to as "demon-detox" and going "cold turkey." The symptoms Sam experiences as a result of being cut off from the demon blood are also similar to the symptoms of withdrawal from hard drugs, including sweating, insomnia, seizures, paranoia, and hallucinations.

5.01 Sympathy for the Devil

Dean asks Sam why he isn't experiencing withdrawal from demon blood now that Ruby is dead, and Sam guesses that "whoever put me on that plane cleaned me right up." Dean asks, "Supernatural methadone?" Methadone is an opioid typically used by hospitals and rehab facilities to treat narcotic addiction in place of the actual drug the user was taking.

5.04 The End

In Zachariah's vision of a post-apocalyptic future, Castiel is no longer an angel and has turned to sex, alcohol, and prescription amphetamine as a means of escapism. Upon meeting him, Dean asks if Castiel is stoned. Castiel's response is, "Generally, yeah."

5.05 Fallen Idols

When Sam and Dean talk to the sheriff about the death off Cal and who did it. Dean asks the sheriff how Jim would have slammed Cal into the windshield with a force of an 80 m/ph crash. The sheriff answers with, "Drugs, maybe?"

5.08 Changing Channels

Dean accuses The Trickster of being an angel, and The Trickster responds to Dean with disbelief. "A what? Somebody slip a mickey into your power shake, kid?"

5.11 Sam, Interrupted

In order to get admitted to a psychiatric hospital for a case, Dean and Sam tell a doctor there about the apocalypse. Sam says he blames himself, but Dean insists it was Ruby's fault, along with the demon blood Sam was drinking. "My brother's not evil," Dean concludes, smiling and shrugging. "He was just... high." Later on in the episode, Sam attacks the doctor believed to be a monster and is sedated. "They gave you something?" Dean asks, to which Sam struggles to reply, "They gave me... everything. It's spectacu--lacular." He laughs, and Dean remarks that Sam always was a happy drunk.

5.13 The Song Remains the Same

Anna goes back to 1978 to kill John and Mary Winchester, in order to stop Sam from ever being born. Castiel takes Sam and Dean back to stop her, and is severely weakened by the effort. Dean checks Cas into a motel and tells Sam "So I paid for Cas for five nights up in the, uh, honeymoon suite. I told the manager, 'Do not disturb no matter what.' You know what he said to me? 'Yeah. Don't sweat it. Want to buy some dope?' ".

6.14 Mannequin 3: The Reckoning

After Sam suffers through resurfacing memories of Hell, Dean offers him food, caffeine... and a bottle of prescription pills that Dean refuses to identify. Sam declines.

6.21 Let It Bleed

Lisa and Ben are kidnapped, and Dean is torturing demons for information. Sam asks him to take a break by saying, "Look, man. You - you're running on what, uh, whisky and - and coffee and whatever else you're taking," implying drug use beyond alcohol and caffeine. Dean answers simply, "Yeah, and?"

7.02 Hello, Cruel World

After Hallucifer posing as Dean suggests that they should get Sam professional help for his hallucinations caused by his PTSD from Hell, Sam quips: "What are they gonna do, Dean? Just stuff me full of pills."

7.03 The Girl Next Door

Dean spends time in Sioux Falls general hospital after Edgar breaks his leg. He is given "a lot" of morphine. Later in the episode, he drops Sam off at a motel, holds up a pill bottle and says "Hey, why don't, uh – why don't you check us in? I got to hit the candy store"

7.04 Defending Your Life

After Sam admits that he doesn't feel any guilt anymore, Dean asks, "What, you got a secret stash of happy pills?"

7.09 How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters

Sam, Dean, and Bobby are convinced Ranger Rick Evans is stoned after they ask him some questions about the strange death and disappearances in town and he acts apathetic. "Ranger Rick? Yeah. Definitely growing his own on the back 40, and smoking all the profits." Later, after Dean experiences the same symptoms as Rick, it's revealed that Dr. Gaines — under the orders of Dick Roman — has developed a food additive that he's introduced into the Turducken sandwich that makes humans crave more at the same time that it alters their DNA, slowing their metabolism and causing weight gain, as well as stunting emotional responses. However, 0.03% of people who consume it turn into zombie-like creatures known as mottled wretches.

7.11 Adventures in Babysitting

Frank Devereaux suggests that Dean needs "A little LSD, a little shiatsu" in order to calm down.

7.14 Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie

When Sam and Dean are investigating strange deaths at Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie, Sam interviews the manager Jean Holliday. When she leaves the interview, Dean follows her and sees her lighting up a joint outside. He then texts Sam, "High Times not our gal." a reference to a magazine dedicated to the legalization of marijuana.

Later in the episode, Sam and Dean chase down Cliff who — thinking the FBI are after him — says, "If this is about the meth lab that fireballed up in Butte, it wasn't me, ok? It was my brother." Dean responds with, "We don't care that you, uh, Broke Bad or whatever." A reference to Breaking Bad, a series on AMC about a high school chemistry teacher who, after being diagnosed with cancer, starts producing methamphetamines in order to make money.

As he's revealing the strange things he and Saul had heard from the sub-basement, he asks Dean, "You ever 'shroom in a ballpit?"

Later in the episode, after Dean defeats Howard and the clowns harassing Sam explode and cover him in glitter, Dean laughs as he teases, "You look like you got attacked by some PCP-crazed strippers."

7.17 The Born-Again Identity

After Sam has been tortured by visions of Lucifer and is pushed to the point of extreme exhaustion, he is shown in an alley with a drug dealer, who has just handed a baggy of white powder to a previous buyer. Lucifer calls the dealer a "tweaker." After the dealer claims he can help Sam sleep, Sam and the dealer are shown passed out in a car. When Sam hallucinates the window shield breaking and wakes up, the hallucination of Lucifer asks Sam, "Pills? You do get that you're just bringing free drugs to the party, right?"

7.22 There Will Be Blood

When Sam expresses concern about taking a man's blood in broad daylight, Dean responds with, "It's friggin' Woodstock. Everybody's hopped up on the brown acid." Woodstock was a music festival held in 1969 in Bethel, New York. Brown acid is also a Woodstock reference — stage announcements were made telling people that some of the brown-colored acid (LSD) circulating in the crowd was giving people bad trips.

Later in the episode, Dean asks the Alpha vampire, "Did [Dick] mention that he was going to, uh, Maui Wowie the human population?" referring to how the additive the leviathans have added to the nationwide food supply has turned everyone docile and lazy — or into stereotypical stoners. Maui Wowie is a potent strain of marijuana.

8.01 We Need to Talk About Kevin

Dean angrily rebukes Sam with a drug-laden non sequitur, "The rules are simple, Sam. You don’t take a joint from a guy named Don, and there’s no dogs in the car!"

8.04 Bitten

There is a large bong in Michael Wheeler and Brian Wilcox's house. After hearing Sam and Dean speculate that the creature responsible for recent deaths may be a Mayan god, Michael (who has become a werewolf) holds the bong aloft and declares: "I am a golden god. I am a golden god!"

8.08 Hunteri Heroici

When a man's heart literally leaps out of his chest, a detective tells Sam that the leading theory at the station is "an ass-load of drugs"—which she is skeptical of. She remarks, "Never seen an eight-ball do that," before pulling the sheet down to reveal the empty hole in the man's corpse's chest. An "eight-ball" is one-eighth ounce (3.5 g) of a powdered psychoactive drug (typically cocaine, but can also be heroin, ketamine, or methamphetamine).

8.11 LARP and the Real Girl

Whilst telling Sam about the witness who heard horses' hooves inside while Ed Nelson was being killed, he theorizes that "she probably heard a TV, or was having a bad dream, or she was high as balls."

8.13 Everybody Hates Hitler

When his golem chastises him for not reading the guide book his grandfather gave him, Aaron Bass explains to Sam and Dean that he used the pages to roll blunts in high school.

8.14 Trial and Error

Kevin is left on his own to translate the demon tablet, and is already shown to be taken aspirin and caffeine regularly. When Dean and Sam drop by, Dean cheerfully gives Kevin two more bottles to add to the mix, along with a friendly slap on the arm. "The, uh, blue ones are for the headaches, and the greens are for pep. Don't O.D." After they're out of earshot, Sam questions Dean, but Dean's response is dismissive. "Sam, we are on the one-yard-line. It is time to play through the pain."

8.19 Taxi Driver

When Kevin is convinced that Crowley is in his head, Dean brushes it off as anxiety-induced paranoia. "It means we need to up your anxiety meds."

9.05 Dog Dean Afternoon

When investigating Avant-Garde restaurant in the search for the murderer of two townspeople in Enid, Oklahoma, Sam comes across a drawer with "Oxycodone, tramadol, methadone" in it. Dean comments that the chef must like to cook "comfortably numb".

9.12 Sharp Teeth

When Garth is hospitalized and unconscious, Dean prepares to inject him with adrenaline in order to revive and question him. However, Sam stops him and slaps Garth awake instead.

9.13 The Purge

Dean is drugged to unconsciousness after eating salted-caramel pudding laced with "supplements." Dean looks at the pills labelled as supplements and identifies them as roofies, leading Sam to question, "How do you know what roofies look like?" Dean combats, "How do you not know?"

9.16 Blade Runners

Crowley is seen in a hotel room, having his demon minion Lola bleed people dry so he could inject his arm with human blood. The blood appears to give him a more human change in personality and a sudden rush upon injection. When he is forced to detox, he gets sweaty and becomes agitated while in the bunker's dungeon.

9.18 Meta Fiction

A shelf of bongs can be seen behind Ian at his store, Ian's Herbal Remedies, in Ogden, Utah.

10.08 Hibbing 911

Jody tells Sam and Dean that Alex smokes grass under the bleachers at school.

10.09 The Things We Left Behind

Dean mentions that when he snuck off to CBGB's in New York when he was underage, he saw people smoking and snorting unknown substances in the club. He also goes on to imply that his drinks, bought for him by older bargoers, were laced with something too.

11.07 Plush

A jailed killer is wearing a mascot head that can't come off, and he won't speak. Disguised as an FBI agent, Dean tries to coax the suspect into talking by baiting him. "So what happened, pal? Hmm? What, you drop too much molly, superglue your mask to your head, get paranoid, stab a guy? I've been there."

11.11 Into the Mystic

While investigating a nursing home for a case, Sam and Dean discover that one of the residents has been stealing Viagra from his neighbors. "A real dick move, huh?" Dean says, before pocketing the bottle for himself.

11.17 Red Meat

In a desperate attempt to save Sam, Dean plans to kill himself by drug overdose. He asks a witness on the scene to help him, saying, "I'm looking for pretty much anything with 'barbital' in the name." After mixing a large number of two sedatives (washed down with grape pedialyte), he overdoses successfully and is able to speak with Billie the reaper. When Dean is later resuscitated, he is placed under arrest for "stealing and consuming a felony's worth of Schedule IV drugs," as well as assaulting a police officer.

11.19 The Chitters

While on a case, Dean interviews a witness who saw her friend be taken by a bisaan while on a "cannabis tasting tour." After interviewing the girl, Libby, Dean surmises that what she saw and heard wouldn't be something she saw while high on weed, and proceeds to poke fun at Sam, who reveals that he tried smoking marijuana once when he was 18 and in college.

14.05 Nightmare Logic

Sasha Rawling takes a couple pills of benzodiazepine to reduce her anxiety.

15.05 Proverbs 17:3

Ashley Monroe says that the lorazepam the doctors gave her really work. Dean looks at the prescription label and recognizes it as "the good stuff."

15.10 The Heroes' Journey

Garth discovers that Dean has 17 cavities, due to never having seen a dentist his whole life. In order to repair his teeth, Garth anesthetizes Dean with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) which sends Dean into a drug induced dream where he and Garth are tap dancing in the Bunker to Irving Aaronson's "Let's Misbehave".

15.16 Drag Me Away (From You)

As Sam searches for the Baba Yaga's nest in the motel, he sees what looks like smoke and hears strange gurgling sounds coming from the back office. On opening the door he finds the night manager taking a hit from a red bong. Annoyed, she shoos him away.
