Death is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse along with Famine, War, and Pestilence. Referred to in the Book of Revelation as the Pale Horseman, the original Death appeared to be the most powerful and eldest of the four, older than Famine, War, and Pestilence. According believed himself to him, he is be the only being in existence that will persist through the end of time. According to Death neither he nor God could remember which of them was older. Since However, when the Darkness was released from her prison, Amara, God's sister, claimed to Dean Winchester that she didn't know who Death was, and vice versa, it proves which firmly established that God is and the Darkness were older than the pale horsemanDeath. Death also believed at the end of time, God himself Himself would die, and he will then reap God.
At some point in the past Death became imprisoned. He , he was released by Lucifer during the Apocalypse, and found himself forced to serve the fallen archangel's wishes. Though he is was often unseen, Death's actions and presence have had far reaching effects. On Lucifer's orders, he resurrected the dead and caused biblical level storms and massive hurricanes. Death was even ordered by Lucifer to destroy Chicago with a massive storm , which would have kill three million people. When Dean encountered him in Chicago, Death revealed that he does not serve Lucifer by choice, and was willing to give up his ring to see Lucifer re-imprisoned, in doing so he agreed to not destroy Chicago, telling Dean he "likes their pizza."
After the defeat of Lucifer, Death returned his attention to maintaining the natural order. In spite of his own reservations about resurrecting the dead, he retrieved SamWinchester's soul from Lucifer's Cage and returned it to him so that the Winchesters could continue to investigate a greater threat against the balance of life and death.
In 2017, it was revealed that the reaper Billie had taken Death's place due to a rule stating that the first reaper to die after an incarnation of Death is killed becomes Death themselves. Billie worked with the Winchesters from 2019 to 2020 to try and take down God, but it was revealed exposed that her true plan was to take power for herself as the new God once Chuck and the Darkness are were gone. Mortally wounded by Dean, Billie attempted to kill him as her last act but is was absorbed into the Empty by the Cosmic Entity, whom she had also double-crossed.
A third incarnation of Death was created soon after Billie was taken to the Empty. In order to read His death book, Chuck had Lucifer create a new Death by killing a reaper named Betty, whom he eventually kills killed again as soon as she opened the book, but before she could reveal its contents, leaving no current incarnation of Death.
Characteristics
}}
The original Death appeared as a very slender, almost skeletal, older man. He would approach any situation in a dry, calm demeanor, never raising his voice or revealing any emotions beyond slight annoyance. Death is was initially seen as being catastrophic, but after the re-imprisonment of Lucifer, he returned to his position as the leader of the reapers and a force for balance in the natural order. Death's knowledge and age are were immeasurable, and his power is was immense, exceeding that of almost any other entity encountered barring God and the Darkness / Amara. Death also had a fondness for junk food; including bacon dogs, pizza, soda, and fried pickle chips.
The original Death also appeared to have a relaxed approach to reaping, allowing Sam and Dean to constantly be resurrected despite the consequences to the natural order , as well as allowing various rogue reapers to operate. With the reaper Billie taking the mantle of Death, she instituted a policy for all reapers of no direct interference. However, she had been shown to make very rare exceptions; bringing DeanWinchester back when the notebooks in Death's Library stated that it was not his time to die, and teleporting SamWinhchester, Castiel, Jack, and Michael to the the Men of Letters Bunker to save their lives.
Chuck Shurley admits also admitted to Sam and Dean that He enjoyed the old Death better than Billie because, "he was all about fried pickles and tickle porn," claiming that she "involves herself too much." Billie later directly intervened in the war against God by protecting Jack in the Empty after his death and then by resurrecting him with a plan that would allow Jack to become strong enough to kill God Himself -- something that violates violated both of her biggest rules in massive ways.
The third Death, Betty, though short-lived, showed a similar lack of patience for the Winchesters.
Powers and abilities
As the eldest and most powerful of the Four Horsemen, and an ancient primordial being of similar age to God, Death was unimaginably powerful and is one of the most powerful beings in existence. To explain his power level to DeanWinchester, he told the Winchester to imagine a bacterium being snarky to him, stating the galaxy is "barely out of its diapers" compared to him. Nothing can kill who he wills to live, as stated by Dean, and he can keep someone dead if he wants to without anyone being able to resurrect them.
* Apporting – Death was able to summon his scythe to him.
* Chronokinesis – As Death, Billie froze time around Dean's suicide and Sam's attempts to revive him so that she could speak with him. This appeared to be a localized effect as the time freeze did not affect the reaper Jessica or the ghosts trapped in the same house.
* Immortality – Death is exempt from all forms of pain, fatigue, age, and disease. While an incarnation of Death can be killed, the mantle of Death will move on to the next reaper that has been killed, ensuring that Death will eventually be the only thing to last forever.
* Nigh-omniscience – Death has an almost absolute awareness of the universe that exceeds that of the archangels, and is only rivaled by God. After Billie takes on the mantle of Death, she becomes aware of the "multi-versal quantum construct" that everyone lives in, as well as the importance of the Winchesters in the grand scheme of the universe.
Despite rivaling God's power, even Death has a few weaknesses and can even be killed.
* Archangels – Lucifer was able to kill the third incarnation of Death, Betty, by snapping his fingers. Whether this was an ability possible by all archangels or a boost given to him Lucifer by Chuck is unknown.* Cosmic Entity – After having the Empty absorb Jack's explosion, Billie tried to protect herself by remaining on Earth, knowing that Chuck has protecting the planet from the Empty making unwanted incursions, unless summoned. Once summoned by Castiel, Billie was absorbed into the Empty along with the angel.* Death's Scythe – Death can be killed by its own scythe. When Dean slashes Winchester slashed Billie in the shoulder with the scythe, even though he wasn't aiming to kill, Dean leaves Billie mortally wounded with a festering injury.
* Mark of Cain – While not truly a weakness per se, the Mark's power is such that even Death cannot remove it from a person bearing it.
* Spells – Death can be effectively bound. God kept the original Death imprisoned beneath the earth for thousands of years for unknown reasons. Lucifer was able to bind Death to his will, and later Dean and SamWinhcester were able to use a spell given to them by Crowley to bind him in an attempt to get him to kill Castiel, who had dubbed himself the new "God."
* Warding sigils – Castiel was able to use an angel banishing sigil as a means to ward Death from entering a room for a brief period.
