History

Deanna Campbell is a hunter married to Samuel Campbell. She is the mother of Mary Winchester and the grandmother of Dean and Sam Winchester, as well as Dean's namesake.

Episodes

4.03 In the Beginning

Dean meets Deanna when Castiel sends him back to 1973 to try and stop Azazel from interfering with his family. Deanna takes her husband's anti-social tendencies in stride, and invites Dean, a stranger, to dinner in spite of Samuel's gruff dismissal of him. When Azazel possesses Samuel to suss out Dean, Deanna hides nearby, watching. She tries to reach the Colt when Azazel stabs Samuel in the stomach, but Azazel snaps her neck, killing her before she can use it. Deanna's resurrection is not on the table when Azazel makes his deal with young Mary.

4.04 Metamorphosis

Deanna isn't mentioned by name, but after Dean informs Sam of what happened in 1973, Sam wonders aloud what the point was to Azazel killing their grandparents (along with the rest of their family), just to give him Demon Blood.

5.13 The Song Remains the Same

John indirectly mentions Deanna when asking Sam and Dean if they knew Mary's parents. Mary also refers to Deanna when reminding Dean that her parents had been killed by Azazel the last time she saw Dean.

6.13 Unforgiven

In one of Sam's flashbacks, Samuel mentions that Deanna had gotten pregnant with Mary when she was hunting with him.

Trivia

  • Deanna also appears in a flashback sequence in the spin-off novel Supernatural: Heart of the Dragon, which shows her, Samuel and Mary on a hunt in San Francisco in 1969; this novel also mentions that Deanna occasionally works as a substitute teacher to finance her family's hunts.
