A flashback to Christmas 1991. Sam is 8. Dean and Sam are again on their own in a motel in Broken Bow, Nebraska on Christmas Eve. Until this age Sam believes his mother died in a car accident, and doesn’t know John is a hunter. On finding John’s Journal, Sam confronts Dean, who confirms that supernatural beings exists, that one killed their mother and that their father hunts them. Dean steals some Christmas presents, pretending their father left them. Sam gives Dean an Amulet meant for John.
1997. Sam is 13. Sam and Dean start at another new school. Sam is tired of always being the new kid. Sam defends Barry Cook from the bullying of Dirk McGregor and wins the praise of Mr. Wyatt for his creative writing. The teacher asks him if Sam really wants to go into "the family business." It's the first time anyone's asked him that question -- and the answer is, "more than anything, no."
As Sam detoxes from demon blood he hallucinates his young self, aged 14, taunting him for his failure to live a 'normal' life.
In Heaven, Dean finds himself sitting in the Impala, and when a thirteen year old version of Sam appears with a box of fireworks. They go to a nearby field and set them, off - Sam obviously delighted. Dean remembers this as the fourth of July, 1996.
In 1998, Sam sees Amy in a library where he is doing research for John and Dean who are on a hunt. He sees Any and tries to talk to her but she says she isn't allowed to talk to boys. On leaving the library, Sam intervenes when she is harassed by two boys.
At her home, Sam and Amy bond over their nomadic lifestyles, and feeling like an outsider. Amy reveals that her mother is very strict, and can be cruel, and wants Amy to be like her - which resonates with Sam's relationship with his dad. They share a kiss, but then Amy's mom returns home. Amy makes Sam hide, as her mom tells her they need to leave town as they are being pursued by "a couple of pros in a piece of crap Impala". While her mother is getting the car ready, Sam sees a brain in a jar, confronts Amy - she is a monster that his father and brother are hunting.
Sam refuses to hurt her, and is leaving as Amy's mother returns and attacks him. Amy kills her, saving Sam. Sam lets her leave, although he turns down her invitation to go with her.
