Chest Hair

Up to episode 12.02, there are 33 chest sightings of Sam, Dean and Castiel. The writers of Supernatural seem to aim for equality between the brothers. So far we have enjoyed 14 wonderful chest sightings of Sam and 11 of Dean. Castiel, who showed his chest for the first time in 5.18 is catching up, with his 8 sightings. We also had the pleasure of experiencing Cupid's and Prometheus’s hairy chests. At the bottom of this page, the numbers are presented in a #Table of Chest Sightings, for easy overview.

Both Dean and Castiel are consistent in the smoothness of their chest. Sam is not. Through the seasons, the amount of chest hair on Sam’s well sculpted chest is changing. In episodes 1.17, 3.11, 5.03 and possibly 4.09 Sam’s chest is smooth and hairless. In episode 2.17 he is hairless, except for a few strands around his nipple. In episodes 6.03, 6.09, 8.10 and 9.10 his chest is clearly hairy and in 6.03 you even see a very inviting Treasure Trail.

There can be a few explanations to theses inconsistencies; most likely Sam either waxed his chest for the first seasons, and later on stopped doing it, or the hairiness increased as Sam grew older. The change in Sam’s chest hairiness coincides with pictures of Jared Padalecki from the early years of the series, compared to the famous pictures (Yeah, that one on the right – enjoy) of him on a Rio beach.

Whether you like chest hair, or no chest hair, is a matter of personal taste. To aid you, in case of any uncertainties, this is a summary of the appearances and evolution of chest hair, or no chest hair, in Supernatural. Painstakingly all bare chest appearances of the main characters, and a few more, have been studied in depth, repeatedly.

Episodes

Shapeshifter Dean is about to shift, and is kind enough to remove his shirt first.	1.06 Skin In the scene where Shapeshifter Dean takes his shirt of, he reveals a very smooth and hairless chest. Though this is just the shapeshifter’s appearance of Dean, it probably is an exact replica of Dean’s glorious chest.
Dean in bed with Cassie.	1.13 Route 666 Even though Dean’s chest is never clearly visible, it seems like his chest is hairless in the hot sex scene with Cassie.
Sam is just out of the shower. All wet and wearing only a towel.	1.17 Hell House Not only is this the episode when we first meet the Ghostfacers, it is also the first time we get to see Sam’s magnificent chest; all wet, muscular and glistening from the shower he just took. It is a clear shot of Sam’s shiny and very smooth chest and there is no trace of any hair (or tattoos).
Dean looks good even when getting resuscitated.	2.01 In My Time of Dying When the medical team is trying to resuscitate Dean we are treated with a couple of views of his clearly hairless chest.
Sam is all cozy with a werewolf, but it’s not the monster that’s hairy.	2.17 Heart The morning after some steamy sex with the werewolf Madison (who later suffers from Sam’s Peen of Death), we get another excellent chest view of Sam. At first look, his chest seems hairless, but if you look closer, which of course is important to do, you can actually see some hairs around his nipple.
Sam shows a little skin when he’s removing a bullet.	3.11 Mystery Spot As we see Sam remove a bullet and stitch himself up, we get a partial glimpse of his chest that seems completely hairless.
Sam and Dean shows their anti-possession tattoos.	3.12 Jus in Bello The Winchester boys show their Anti-possession tattoos for the first time and we get to see a tiny amount of skin again, however it is not enough to determine whether there is any chest hair on either of their muscular chests.
When returning from hell, it's important to check the condition of the chest hairiness.	4.01 Lazarus Rising After being raised from perdition, Dean realizes his torn up body is whole again. Thankfully he confirms this in front of a mirror, allowing us to enjoy another of the rare chest sightings. It is evident that not only are his pectoral (pectoralis major [1]) muscles hairless, his lower abdominal is also clear of any “Treasure Trail” [2] [3].
Sam has super-hot sex with Ruby.	4.09 I Know What You Did Last Summer Sam sure knows how to have fun with a demon. While this chest sighting is not the clearest concerning chest hair, it sure is steaming hot and well worth the effort. After extensive research, Sam seems to be hairless in this episode. However, due to the difficulties to actually see the significant parts of Sam’s body, a recommendation is to watch this particular scene to form your own opinion.
Dean has sweet angelic sex in Baby.	4.10 Heaven and Hell While Sam enjoyed some demonic action in the former episode, Dean has some angelic action in this one. We get to appreciate an unusual amount of skin, and a very clear shot of Castiel's Handprint, but we never get to see a clear chest shot. There is some armpit hair shown, but never any chest hair.

Sam shows his anti-possession tattoo.	4.18 The Monster at the End of This Book To prove that the Winchester boys are true Supernatural fans, they show their anti-possession tattoos to the publisher of the Carver Edlund books, and we get another partial sightings of their pectorals. Again, this is not enough skin to determine whether there is any chest hair of either of their chests.
Sam is dreaming that he is in bed with Jess	5.03 Free to Be You and Me In his dream, Sam wakes up to find Jess in his bed. We can see Sam’s chest, but who knows what he wears, or not wears, under that cover. Yet again it is evident that Sam has no chest hair.
Cupid spreads his love with hugs for everyone.	5.14 My Bloody Valentine An almost naked Cupid shows up hugs everyone, and reviles a full on (though modestly) hairy chest.
Cas is always ready to bleed for the Winchesters	5.18 Point of No Return To help Sam and Dean save Adam from becoming Michael’s vessel, Castiel carves an Angel Banishing Sigil on his chest. When he is fighting the angels, Castiel rips his shirt open and exposes his chest, bloody with the sigil. This is the first time we get to see Castiel’s chest, but due to the carving it is difficult to get a full view of it, and therefore difficult to determine the hairiness. Judging from the little we can see, it does seem to be hairless.

Sam got a hookers phone number.	6.03 The Third Man This is one of the most bare chested episodes in the entire series, which is greatly appreciated, and demanded an in depth study. First we get to see a partial chest shot of Dean, when he dreams that he is in bed with Lisa. Yet again the visible parts are completely hairless. The next scene is probably one of the most appreciated ones, with Sam doing bare chested workout. Not only is he very sweaty and ripped, he also clearly has chest hair on his pectoral muscles as well as a “Treasure Trail”.
Sam has no soul, so he has sex with hippie girl instead of looking for Dean who’s about to get probed by aliens.	6.09 Clap Your Hands If You Believe... Dean returns from being abducted, to find Sam in bed with the hippie girl Sparrow. We only get to see a partial of Sam’s chest, but it is enough to determine that he indeed has a hairy chest.
Dean is about to play naughty games with an Amazon.	7.13 The Slice Girls Dean plays with a naughty lady, and there are consequences. Thanks to this we get to enjoy Dean stripping and having hot sex with an Amazon, and he has without a doubt, no chest hair.
Sam gets to show his anti-possession tattoo to the Trans.	8.02 What's Up, Tiger Mommy? Dean tells Linda Tran that she and Kevin need to be inked up. To convince them, Sam shows his tattoo. It's way too fast to determine anything else than that Sam has a very nice tattoo.
Sam looks at Amelia with puppy eyes.	Sam and Amelia talks about stuff. 8.10 Torn and Frayed Sam lies in bed while having a serious talk with Amelia, who wears his way too large shirt from yesterday. We get to enjoy his sculpted pectorals, which are adorned with moderate hairiness.
Greek God Prometheus comes back to life in a morgue, wearing only a sheet.	8.16 Remember the Titans A man dies and resurrects repeatedly in this episode. The man, Shane, later turns out to be the Greek Titan Prometheus who is cursed (by Zeus) to die every day. Sam and Dean meet him for the first time as a corpse in the morgue. When he rises from death, we get to see his chest, which is slightly haired on the pectorals. When the boys catch him, we get a little glimpse of his lower abdomen; it seems the lower regions are hairless, though it is difficult to be certain.
Cas is human, and needs to do some laundry. It's horrible that he has nothing to change in to, when doing that.	9.01 I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here Castiel has had a rough day and is undressing at a laundromat. In the shot he is standing in only his white boxers, while filling the machine and (after numerous re watches) it is evident that Castiel lacks chest hair. Furthermore there seems to be no Treasure Trail, though the angle of the shot might be deceptive. Still, it's well worth some "rewinding of the tape".
April and Cas in bed. Cas tattoo looks nice. Hey, wasn’t the angel blade for protection?.	9.03 I'm No Angel In this episode we are treated with three scenes of Castiel’s bare skin. First there is the scene when Cas walks in to a Tattoo place and shows one of his famous hip bones. There is no visible Treasure Trail, but again, the angle might be deceptive. Then Cas gets picked up by waitress/reaper April and there are a few very interesting scenes. In bed with April, after having sex for the first time (he had protection), Cas shows his torso down to the navel. There is no trace of any chest hair at all. A Treasure Trail might start under the navel, hence the existence of such hairiness or lack thereof, is inconclusive. Though we do now know that Cas has no hair around his nipples. The final scene of a bare chested Castiel is when he is interrogated and tortured by April. Whit the shirt open, his torso down to the navel is again visible – and hairless.
Castiel burns the anti-possession tattoo off Sam's chest.	9.10 Road Trip Sam is possessed by Gadreel, who is refusing to leave his vessel. The unexpected coalition of Dean, Crowley and Castiel, makes a plan of how to abolish Gadreel from Sam. Cas opens Sam’s shirt to burn of his tattoo, and we get a glimpse of his chest before and after the removal. This is the first time we see chest hair, when only the tattoo is exposed.
Crowley sipping champagne and having feels, dressed in (only?) a robe.	9.16 Blade Runners In his addiction to human blood, Crowley shows a lot of human feelings. In bed, dressed in a silk robe, he is apparently drinking champagne, and crying to the movie Casablanca. There’s not much skin to be excited over, but the little we are treated with, is clearly hairy. Let’s hope we get more opportunities to further explore the extent to Crowley’s chest hairiness.
Dean takes a shower and more than the mirror gets damp.	9.18 Meta Fiction Dean takes a steamy shower, and through the dampness of the mirror (and such), we get to see a partial of his torso when he strokes... the Mark of Cain. It is not possible to draw any conclusion concerning hairiness from this shot, but it is very important to study it anyway, because of reasons.
In the eleventh hour Gadreel decides to help Team Free Will, and carves an Enochian sigil into his chest.	9.23 Do You Believe in Miracles? Gadreel finally realizes he has been duped by Metatron, and wants to help Team Free Will. After he and Cas ends up in heavens jail, he carves the Enochian sigil that makes stuff go boom! During his speech we get to see a disfigured, but beautiful chest. It seems hairless, but who knows what was under those scars.
Demon Dean enjoys being a bad boy. Hannah gets a surprise when Cas opens the door.	10.01 Black Dean enjoys howling at the moon, and after singing “I’m too sexy for my love” he ends up in bed, Crowley’s bed as it turns out, with the waitress Anne Marie. Demon Dean turns out to be just as hairless on the chest, as normal Dean is. Cas is not feeling so well now that his substitute grace is fading. Sam calls him while he is in bed, under a sheet, with an open robe under the cover. Later we see him open the door for Hannah, in the same open robe. He is hot and feverish, and his torso is sweaty and hairless.
Cas brings a message.	11.10 The Devil in the Details The angels tried to smite Amara in the last episode. In this one we learn that she is still alive. Not he is a tad bit upset and wants to send a message to the Winchesters and their allies. Though she couldn't find any post-its
Sam is bleeding all over his hairy abdomen.	11.17 Red Meat An ugly ass werewolf shoots Sammy, and Dean removes the bullet. When Sam is dressing the wound, we can see a hairy abdomen through all the blood.
Sam takes sleeping with the enemy to a whole new level. Not that we are complaining.	12.02 Mamma Mia The twelfth season makes a good start, with a whole lot of chest exposure already in the second episode. Sam seems to enjoy Lady Antonia Bevell’s company in bed. We later learn that this is a hallucination, created by a potion and powerful spells. Many things can be derived from this scene if you do an in depth study of it. (This is of great import) Sam still has a really magnificent chest. He is well toned, has perky nipples and a hairy chest with a very exiting treasure trail, but it should also be noted that there are no traces of any tattoos or any form of scars or wounds. (Does Dean still have the tattoo?) To conclude, this is just a pretty darn hot Winchester chest. With hair.
Castiel is cracking up, and not in a good way.	12.12 Stuck in the Middle (With You) Mother Mary is being all kinds of bad, and as a result Castiel gets stabbed by The Lance of Michael. It turns out that it’s magic and that it “kills the bad ones fast, and the good ones slow and painful”. Cas is dying and when Dean lifts his shirt to assess the injury, it’s apparent that Castiel is starting to crack. It is also apparent that there is not a single hair to be seen.
A rare Ketch chest sighting.	12.17 The British Invasion Ketch rests in a hotel bed, with a killer worthy man spread, while Mary gets ready for the day. It appears that there has been some adult pillow fighting between those black silk sheets, and Ketch is in no rush to leave the crime scene. Without super sharp high-resolution pictures, it’s a bit difficult to fully examine this unique sighting of a bare Ketch chest (repeat that 10 times at a fast pace, I dare you). However, judging from this picture, it seems that this British Man of Letter does have a hairy chest. The hairiness is sparse and concentrated to the area between his pecks. If comparisons are made to the hairiness on other Ketch areas, the level of chest hairiness seems to be natural and not groomed. Unfortunately we are not treated with any treasure trail sightings.

As can be seen in the case of Sam’s chest hair evolution, changes might occur. In the table above, a great discrepancy in chest hair sightings between Sam, Dean and Castiel can be noted. To maintain the scientific validity of this study, it is of great import that the empiric data becomes more evenly distributed. Therefore the bare chest sightings of Dean and Castiel have to increase. In fact, the number of Castiel chest hair sightings is so low that a dramatic change is of utmost importance.
