A witch, also known as a sorcerer or warlock, is a person, whether male or female, who has gained the power to effect change by magical means ("witchcraft") through study and practice, natural ability or through dealing with demons. Most of those encountered by Sam and Dean are practitioners of black magic - that is, spells used for self-gain or to harm others. In 3.09 Malleus Maleficarum, it is stated that witches can get their power from demons - presumably in exchange for their souls, though that is proven to be not strictly true, it is just the easiest way. Some witches are shown to be self-taught, no deals or mentors, just a book of spells. In 10.07 Girls, Girls, Girls it is revealed that a small segment of witches are born with a natural ability for witchcraft. Some witches also have a companion known as a familiar who can appear in either animal or human form. It is notable that hunters like Sam, Dean and Bobby often use the same spells and rituals, but would not consider themselves witches.

Witches can be extremely long lived and very powerful. Only three of the witches encountered have been killed by Sam or Dean.
