Wayward History
The Wayward Daughters Academy was a fan idea for a Supernatural spin-off that started in April 2015 and has grown into a much larger movement within fandom.
At the end of 9.19 Alex Annie Alexis Ann, Sheriff Jody Mills took Alex Jones, a young woman who had been held captive by a nest of vampires, home to live her. Later, in 10.20 Angel Heart, Claire Novak is reunited with her mother Amelia Novak only to then tragically lose her. Sam, Dean and Castiel, also send her to Jody Mills while she heals. As she leaves she says "This is some sort of halfway house for wayward girls?", and the idea was born among the fandom to have Sheriff Donna Hanscum and Jody running a home for young women as a spin-off.Here's a post on Tumblr by peter-pantomine which posits the question in a post staring with the line "can we talk about how perfectly sending Claire to Jody sets things up for the best imaginable spin-off?"
Two fans, Riley Keshner and Betty Days, set up a Twitter and Tumblr account to promote the idea with a letter writing campaign and petition. It captured the imagination of fans and actors including Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster. Presciently, one fan speculated on "#Jody&DonnasHomeForWaywardGirls with @robertberens as head writer."
Jody and Alex reappeared in the episode 12.22 Who We Are -- and survived the season.

The On May 11th it was announced that the CW has had chosen not to order Wayward Sisters to series. Creator and writer Bob Berens tweeted the above on the 11th May, followed by Supernatural showrunner Andrew Dabb who said:<br>
:"It breaks my heart to say this, but CW has chosen to pass on Wayward Sisters. We love these characters, and have spent almost two years trying to make this show a reality on the network... but there are some fights, sometimes, you can't win. I want to thank everyone involved in this entire process, from our fantastic crew, to our amazing cast, and, most of all you. Your passion for this idea fueled us, and we wanted so much to make this happen for you. I'm so sorry we couldn't. But know that these characters will live on. We owe them, and you, and us that. Thank you.
Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster expressed their sadness and disappointment as did the @WaywardDaughters account, along with other Supernatural cast members. Many pointed out that this had always been, and would continue to be, more than a TV series, it had always been about fighting for diverse female representation in media, as well as women emporwering and supporting each other.

Fans spent the week weeks following the decision protesting and sending feedback to the CW. An online petition gathered over 70,000 signatures.

The pilot for Desite his earlier suport of the Wayward Sisters series bought in solid ratings and rated as the second highest scripted show on the Nielsen Social ratings. Importantly the reviews from media blogs and fans alike were overwhelmingly positive. Earlier in the year CW President, Mark Pedowitz had reported that he liked the Wayward Sisters pilot and that the show's future would rest on fan support, at the Upfronts on May 17th Mark Pedowitz he said:
:“We had really great material this year,” he said. “We’re really exited about the five series we did pick up. We are big fans of the characters and the women who played the characters in the series, but we did not feel creatively the show is where we wanted it to be. We felt we had a better shot with Legacies.”
He added that CW execs were “big fans” of the Wayward actresses “and hope they continue on... guest starring on Supernatural.”

In October 2018, Kim and Brianna announced that they were teaming up to produce the Wayward Podcast. Kim said of the podcast:
: “This podcast is not about Supernatural, it’s not about the fandom, it’s about our perspective on life as two friends and two women moving through this world. “We’re inviting the fans to stop being fans and start being fellows. I really love the fact that this has been inspired by not having a TV show, and we actually don’t see it as our consolation prize; we see it as more than a TV show because humanity and connection is so much bigger than a television show, and now we have an opportunity to do that. We have the opportunity to increase what we are, not out of ego, but out of passion for connection and authenticity.”

Further Appearances
Following the Wayward Sisters pilot, only Sheriff Jody Mills, Sheriff Donna Hanscum, Dark Kaia and Kaia Nieves ever appeared on Supernatural again. Claire Novak, Alex Jones and Patience Turner never returned to the show again aside from a brief voice cameo for Alex in 15.12 Galaxy Brain. However, in 14.11 Damaged Goods, Donna mentioned to Dean that the group was still training and working as hunters.

Storyline Closure
In 15.12 Galaxy Brain, God starts destroying all other universes, commenting at one point about "failed spin-offs," a reference to Wayward Sisters and the earlier failed Bloodlines. Writer Robert Berens tweeted after the episode "The arc of S1 of Wayward Sisters was always going to be broadly Dark Kaia vs the WaywardSisters, culminating in Kaia’s rescue and Dark Kaia’s tragic defeat. I always wanted to make that death right. But with limited real estate on #Supernatural I had resigned myself to Kaia just being dead. It was only by embedding it in S15 stories (Chuck, Jack’s return to the Bunker, Billie’s plan) it felt like it was possible to tie that loose end in a relevant and appropriate way."

During the course of the episode, the Winchesters team up with Sheriff Jody Mills and capture Dark Kaia who reveals that the Bad Place is dying and that Kaia Nieves is still alive and trapped in the other world. With the help of Merle and Jack Kline, the Winchesters return to the Bad Place and rescue Kaia while Dark Kaia chooses to stay behind and die with her world. At the end of the episode, Kaia accepts an invitation to return to Sioux Falls with Jody. Though only Jody and Kaia appear of the Wayward Sisters cast, Alex Jones makes a voice cameo at the beginning, talking to Jody on the phone and Claire is stated to be out chasing a false lead on Dark Kaia out of cell phone range during the events of the episode but will be home soon.
