Casifer is a portmanteau made up of Castiel and Lucifer. It arose in fandom after 11.10 The Devil in the Details when Castiel consents to possession by Lucifer as he believes it is the only way to defeat the Darkness. Some fans also used the variant Lustiel.
Writer Robbie Thompson confirmed that, following their convention of shortening Castiel to Cass, the writers [used the name "Cassifer." Fandom, responded with a series of outraged gifs, informed Thompson that the author was dead, and embraced their own preferred term.
