Apocalypse

5,085 bytes added, 02:34, 12 December 2019
Metatron's plan was a "take over heaven and earth" scenario. The Leviathans were trying to convert the world to their liking as well. Both sides had different endgames. The civil war in Season 6 involved Eve's plans as well, not just Raphael's plans.
When they learn from Gabriel that Lucifer can be re-imprisoned using the rings of the Four Horsemen, Sam, Dean, Bobby, Castiel, and Crowley do whatever it takes to acquire the rings. Sam comes up with a plan to say yes to Lucifer, so that the archangel will enter him and he can gain control just long enough to throw himself into the pit, dragging Lucifer along with him. Team Free Will is reluctant to agree, but eventually realize that it's the only way to stop the Apocalypse, after Death confirms that Sam's plan is viable. Sam gives Lucifer his consent, but is unable to control him. They go to Stull Cemetery to meet with Michael and begin the final battle. However, Dean interrupts, and gives Castiel enough time to banish Michael long enough for Dean to make an attempt to reach Sam. After Lucifer kills Castiel and Bobby and turns his attention to Dean, Sam manages to wrestle control back from the archangel and use the Horsemen rings to open the portal. Michael tries to stop him, but he and Adam end up getting imprisoned along with Lucifer and Sam. God revives Castiel as a Seraph, who in turn revives Bobby. With the Apocalypse stopped, Dean decides to quit the hunting life and goes to live a normal life with Lisa and Ben Braeden.
First Angelic Civil War
Season 6
Following soon after the events of 5.22 Swan Song, a civil war breaks out in Heaven between Raphael and Castiel. Raphael gathered a group of traditionalist angels in order to conquer Heaven and restart the Apocalypse. Castiel, and many other angels, have waged war against him, wanting to prevent the world from ending. The two angels started racing each other to gather a number of Angelic Weapons stolen by Balthazar to rally their forces. Castiel says " Whoever has the weapons wins the war." While Castiel is able to reach Balthazar first, he is reluctant to give him the weapons as he is selling them in exchange for souls. Eventually, after Raphael starts targeting everyone associated with Castiel, Balthazar decides to send him and Virgil on a wild goose chase after the Winchesters into an alternate universe while he locates and provides the weapons to Castiel. With these weapons, Castiel is able to strengthen his forces considerably. According to Bartholomew, Castiel even defeated Raphael and a majority of his loyalists with a small unit of 20 angels.
Dean, Sam and Castiel use this to fashion a weapon using the bone of a nun, and the blood of Castiel (a fallen angel), Crowley (ruler of fallen humanity) and the Alpha Vampire (father of fallen beasts). Dean and Castiel use the weapon on Dick Roman, their leader, but get sent to Purgatory in the process. As a result, the remaining leviathan go incognito indefinitely.

Second Angelic Civil War
Season 8
After catching up to everything that has happened in Heaven in his absence, Metatron decides to seal the gates and recruits Castiel to undertake the trials, under the guise of repairing the damage he and the angels caused. However, when Naomi captures him and digs into his mind, she sees his real plans for the angels. Metatron's plan is to banish all angels from Heaven to Earth as revenge to angelkind for sending him on the run and refusing to accept how things were after God left. The spell he used required the heart of a nephilim, a cupid's bow, and the grace of an angel. After neutralizing Naomi, Metatron captures Castiel and steals his grace for the spell. He sends Castiel back to earth and they watch as the angels start descending from Heaven.

Season 9
At the time of the Fall, thousands of angels either died as a result or were left injured. Many of them were searching for any vessel in order to manifest on earth, although many humans were unable to contain them. The factions of angels led by Bartholomew and Malachi have been slaughtering each other with a common goal to find Metatron and restore their kind to Heaven. Some angels, such as the Penitents led by the angel Rebecca or others like Abner, have decided to live humbly among the humans. Others like Thaddeus decided to make themselves idols for the humans. Many others like the Rit Zien Ephraim have decided to continue their heavenly work on Earth.
Metatron decided to rebuild Heaven as its new leader and recruits the angel Gadreel to be his second-in-command. He uses the angel tablet to give himself powers semi-equivalent to God, making him immune to holy fire and enhance his strength. Metatron also uses Gabriel's Horn to summon the angels and recruit them to Metatron's army and return them to Heaven and have Gadreel slay the angels who refuse to follow him. To keep Heaven inaccessible to the rest of angelkind, Metatron creates a portal to Heaven that can be relocated in order to keep its existence a secret.
Metatron's plan is to manipulate the angels into following his story, making himself the hero and Castiel the villain. When he discovers that Castiel has stolen Theo's grace to make himself an angel again, he motivates Castiel to lead the rebellious angels against him. However, due to Castiel's experience from the first angelic civil war against Raphael, he unexpectedly gains more followers than Metatron and makes progress in uniting angelkind. In order to turn them against Castiel, Metatron has the reaper Tessa and a group of angels recruited by Gadreel brainwashed into making themselves act as suicide bombers, killing one angel and all the other humans in the blast radius, and framing Castiel for the crimes. He also tells Castiel and his followers that he's giving all of angelkind a chance to return to Heaven, where he will be their god, and to inform them of how Castiel killed an angel to steal his grace and only cares about himself and the Winchesters. After Castiel refuses to kill Dean for killing Tessa, Hannah and the rest of his followers abandon him. However, Gadreel has a change of heart and sides with Castiel and the Winchesters.
After rallying angelkind back to Heaven, Metatron decides to make his move against humanity, making himself look like a messianic faith healer named "Marv" to the people in a homeless encampment. His plan is to eventually make himself idolized before humanity as the new God. Castiel and Gadreel plan to make their way to heaven in order to destroy the angel tablet and make Metatron an ordinary angel again, however they get imprisoned in Heaven's dungeon by Ingrid and Hannah. Meanwhile, Dean and Crowley manage to follow Metatron's trail after watching a video of him reviving a woman hit by a car. They catch up to Sam, who gets his location after speaking to the woman he healed. Dean makes his way to the warehouse where Metatron is waiting for him. After a brief monologue on both sides, Dean brandishes the First Blade and they begin to fight. Meanwhile, Gadreel sacrifices himself to help Castiel escape form the dungeon and convince Hannah that Metatron is the real enemy. They search his office and find the angel tablet in his typewriter. As Sam makes his way to the fight, Metatron jams an angel blade into Dean's heart and escapes, but not before Castiel smashes the tablet, breaking Metatron's power. Metatron restrains Castiel and muses about how angelkind has flocked over to him like sheep and won't care about anything he did, even if they find out the truth, because he belives that they are too scared of him to rebel. As Metatron prepares to kill him, Castiel reveals that he has inadvertently broadcast his speech all throughout angel radio. The angels immediately turn against him and Castiel has him locked away in Heaven's dungeon, effectively ending the war.
