Jensen Ackles appeared as Lt Kaffee alongside Lou Diamond Phillips as Col.Jessep in a production of the play A Few Good Men at the Casa Mañana Theatre, in Fort Worth, Texas from June 5 to 10, 2007. Jensen achieved good reviews for his performance, the first on stage since he left high school.
A Few Good Men was written by Aaron Sorkin (creator of the TV series The West Wing) and centers around the court martial of two marines from Guantanamo Bay Naval Base because of their alleged involvement in the death of a fellow marine. It was a successful Broadway play before it was made into a film directed by Rob Reiner in 1992. The central characters are the Naval lawyer Lt Kaffee (played in the movie by Tom Cruise) and the senior Base Commander Col Jessep (Jack Nicholson). The most famous line in the film, "You can't handle the truth' is spoken by Nicholson as Cruise cross-examines him.
There was much speculation to whether Jared, who was in Vancouver filming The Christmas Cottage, would attend the play. He did, accompanied by girlfriend Sandra McCoy on June 6. Despite cleverly disguising himself with a baseball cap, Jared was recognized by some fans. He was seen to greet Danneel with a big Hey girl and a kiss. At interval he infamously offered to buy Jensen's father (whom he called Papa Ackles) some Skittles. faninohio on her LJ and TWOP.
An overheard phone conversation between Jared and Jensen indicated that the visit had been a surprise. Jared then led a standing ovation at the end of the play.
Many fans traveled to Fort Worth to see Jensen on stage. There was consternation beforehand about the potential undesirable behavior of some fans especially following the incident at the Asylum Convention when Jensen was tackled by a woman. When, despite an edict from the theatre that all cameras would be confiscated, some fans expressed a desire to record the performance in some way, there was much argument as to theater etiquette.
While there were no embarrassing incidents during the performances, some fans did take still photos and make audio recordings during some performances. When these were posted on an LJ community, heated debate followed. Some of this was documented on Fandom Wank.
A review from the Daily Morning News:
Mr. Ackles who really sets off the fireworks in this A Few Good Men. He's slick and funny, but human underneath. His stage technique is nigh onto perfect – and this is a guy who's been working steadily on large and small screens for a decade.
