Synopsis
Using the blood spell Abaddon travels back in time to 1723, to Leith in Scotland. There she finds Crowley's son Gavin MacLeod, and brings him back to the present day.
At a bar, a group of angels are relaxing and having a drink. Another angel, Ezra, approaches boasting that he is one of Metatron's favored minions. After he leaves the bar, they kidnap him and take him back to the base of Castiel's operation.
Sam and Dean arrive at Castiel's headquarters where he greets them with a hug. He explains that he wants the war between the angels to end peacefully, and he has reluctantly taken on the role of leader. He explains that they have captured Ezra and want to find out what he knows of Metatron's plan, but so far he hasn't told them anything. Cas wants the Winchesters to interrogate him and do what it takes to get the information.
In Cleveland, Ohio Crowley is exhorting his lieutenants to restore confidence in his followers. Unfortunately, they are now loyal to Abaddon, who appears in the room. She offers him a deal as she knows Sam and Dean have the First Blade - help her take down the Winchesters, and then they can battle for rule of Hell.
Crowley scoffs at the deal, but Abaddon brings in her bargaining chip – Gavin. Crowley says he and Gavin both loathe each other, but Abaddon knows that Crowley still has some human emotions. She starts torturing Gavin, and eventually Crowley breaks. Gavin is shocked to find out that he is now 291 years in the future – and that Crowley is the King of Hell.
In the cell where Ezra is held, Dean is about to attack him with an angel blade, but Sam holds him back. Instead Sam starts taunting Ezra, saying he is a fake, and unimportant. In his defense, Ezra starts sharing what he knows – that Metatron has an elite squad, and that there is a secret portal to Heaven, which moves around.
Soon after Sam and Dean leave Ezra, he is found dead. They suggest to Cas that he has a mole in his organization and offer to investigate. Cas asks Sam to stay back, and inquirers about what Sam knows of Gadreel from when he was possessed. Sam is reluctant to talk about it, but says that he thought Gadreel had felt unsettled and misunderstood, but not aggressive. He says that he was wrong about that, given that Gadreel killed Kevin.
Meanwhile Crowley is talking to Gavin. Gavin complains that he was a terrible father, which Crowley admits, and that he never even learned to read. Crowley uses his power to allow Gavin to read. He tells Abaddon he will help her take out the Winchesters.
Castiel meets with Gadreel, and tries to convince him that Metatron is using him, and that his plans are not in Heaven's best interests. Gadreel is skeptical, but they are then attacked by some of Metatron's angels. Castiel and Gadreel manage to kill them and escape.
Crowley sends Sam and Dean to a cemetery where he has hidden the First Blade inside a corpse. As they are about to retrieve it, a hellhound attacks. They escape and hide in a mausoleum. They call Crowley, who calls off the hellhound. He tells them to bring the blade to him in Ohio where he has Abaddon under surveillance. He uses the word "Poughkeepsie" which he knows is a secret warning word that the Winchesters use. Even though she is unaware of this, she has her suspicions and so Abaddon shoots Crowley with a bullet inscribed with a devil's trap to restrain him.
Gadreel meets with Cas again, and explains that he was shocked that Metatron sent angels to attack him. He explains that though they might be on opposite sides, he wants to behave with honor. Cas accuses him of bad judgment for trusting Metatron. Gadreel says he has given his word to Metatron. Cas argues that if he provides information to Cas, it will help level the playing field, as Metatron obviously has a spy in Cas' camp.
Sam and Dean arrive to meet Crowley. Dean, armed with the First Blade, tells Sam to scope the basement, while he heads to the penthouse. He finds Crowley disabled, and quickly kills a demon before Abaddon attacks him, telekinetically pinning him to the wall. As the Mark of Cain is activated by the blade, Dean gets the strength to break free, but Abaddon pushes back with her power, and this time Dean drops the First Blade. He redoubles his efforts though, and is able to telekinetically get the Blade to fly to him.
Sam enters just as Dean breaks free again, and strides towards Abaddon, stabbing her with the First Blade and killing her. He continues stabbing her, until Sam calls him off. The Winchesters don't kill Crowley, but tell him they must return Gavin to his own time. Crowley protests, knowing he is destined to die soon there, and manages to escape with Gavin. He tells Gavin they mustn't ever see each other again.
Sam and Dean are in the Impala, and Sam expresses concern over the effect of the First Blade on Dean. Dean says he knew from the moment he held the Blade that he would kill Abaddon, that it didn't make him angry, but calm. Sam suggests they hide the First Blade somewhere until they need it next, but Dean refuses with a simple "No."
