Synopsis

Dean is laying on his bed and listening to music through headphones, when he yells Sam's name. While the lights flicker, Sam, in a panic, searches the bunker looking for Dean. As a ghostly figure appears behind Sam, Dean shoots it with a salt round and announces that the bunker is haunted.

The boys discuss how it is possible for the bunker to be haunted, and Sam concludes that it must be Kevin. While Dean argues that it cannot be Kevin, the coffeemaker begins to ding.

At a cemetery, Castiel confronts another angel from a rebel faction that was led by Rebecca, a dead angel whose vessel is being buried. She was close to Metatron, and Castiel was looking for information. Cas finds out that Bartholomew killed Rebecca.

Sam sits by the coffeemaker waiting for Kevin to make contact. Dean takes over and, as he begins to apologize for what happened, Kevin appears. He tells Sam and Dean that Heaven is closed and everyone who has died since Metatron's spell is stuck in the Veil. He then asks Sam and Dean to find his mother. He received information from a ghost named Candy that his mother was alive and being held captive.

Sam and Dean go to the woods where Candy died in the hopes of summoning her to get more information. The boys bicker and, while they wait, Dean attempts to call Crowley. They are able to speak with Candy who describes the boxes where she was held with Mrs. Tran, as well as her captors. The boys determine that it was a storage facility and Crowley was the captor. At the storage facility, we see that Linda Tran is chained and trapped inside one of the units.

Meanwhile at the cemetery, Castiel is captured by Bartholomew and taken to his headquarters. Bartholomew is happy to see Cas, and they talk about when they worked together during Heaven's civil war and Cas' victory over Raphael. Bartholomew then tells Cas about his plan to find Metatron and retake Heaven. He wants Castiel's help.

Sam and Dean start checking all the local storage facilities. They arrive at a Castle Storage where they look at the records and the floor plan of the facility. The clerk, Del, helpfully informs them that several units are rented by “D. Webster” which the boys deduce to be Crowley. Sam goes to check out 3 adjoining units, while Del takes Dean to check out a 4th unit on the other side of the complex.

Sam opens one of the storage units and finds a frantic Linda. As Sam tries to release her chains so they can escape, Del remotely closes and locks the door, trapping Sam and Linda inside. Then, as Dean determines that this is not Crowley's unit, Del hits Dean from behind and knocks him unconscious.

Bartholomew shows Cas his massive ground operation to find Metatron. Bart tells Cas they would make a great team. He has also captured the angel that worked with Rebecca and he intends to torture him to get information.

Sam frees Linda from the chains and they work together to short circuit the electrical system to open the door to the storage unit. Linda asks about Kevin, and Sam tells her (without words) that he is dead. More determined then ever, Linda works to get the door open.

Dean wakes up to find himself tied up and Del, who is a demon, ranting and raving about Crowley. Dean tells Del that he is tight with Crowley which further angers Del. Just as Del is about to kill Dean, Sam bursts in and knocks out the demon

Meanwhile, Bartholomew tortures the angel Eliah, and then he wants Castiel to kill him. When Cas refuses, Bartholomew goads Cas, who still refuses. Cas said he would rather be killed then join Bartholomew. Then, Bartholomew kills the angel and turns to fight Castiel. Castiel initially refuses to defend himself, but then he gets the upper hand and turns the angel blade on Bartholomew. However, Cas drops the angel blade and walks away. Bart pulls out another blade and goes after Cas. Cas, in self defense, kills Bartholomew. He then walks out.

Back at the storage unit, Dean and Sam allow Linda to kill Del, and then they return to the bunker. The boys confront Kevin and tell him that they rescued his mom and they brought her to him. Linda and Kevin have a heartfelt reunion. Linda wants to take Kevin home and so they find an object, Mr. Tran's ring, that ties Kevin to this plane. Linda vows to keep Kevin safe as long as she can.

Cas returns to the cemetery to pay his respects to Rebecca. One of Bartholomew's minions approaches Cas and says that he chooses Castiel. The angel assures Castiel that Cas is a leader and that he will follow him, as will other angels.

As Kevin says goodbye to Sam and Dean, he tells them that he heard everything that is going on between the brothers. He wants Sam and Dean to promise him that they will get over it, because the fighting is stupid. They both agree, and Kevin leaves with his mom. Dean turns to talk to Sam, but Sam walks away. Sam goes to his room, but he hesitates before entering. Dean returns to his room, where he lays down on his bed, puts on his headphones, and listens to his music.

Quotes

Sam: So...
Dean: Yup, bunker's haunted.
Dean: Kevin? Kevin. All right, I can't do this. Coffee-buzzing, bump-in-the-night crap. I got serious things to say to you, okay? And I'm not gonna say them to this. Kevin, I'm sorry. You did not choose this life. You busted your ass, you lost everything, everyone you've loved... And your reward? Getting killed... On my watch. If I... It was on me. It was my fault, and... And there's nothing I can do to make that right. I am so sorry.
Kevin: No, this is not happening. Didn't spend months struggling to break through the veil just to get stuck listening to Dean Winchester having a self-pity session. Didn't hear enough of those when I was alive.
Dean: Wait, wait, wait. Why aren't you in -- in Heaven? I mean, if anybody deserves an express pass to paradise --
Kevin: I couldn't. I can't. No one can. Heaven's closed for business. Everyone who's died since the angels fell are just stuck inside the Veil, waiting. And it's bad in here. Like DMV-line-times-infinity bad.
Sam: You feel that? I think I felt a chill.
Dean: Yeah, that's 'cause it's cold.
Bartholomew: Realizing they were more trouble than they were worth, we purged our human allies, then commandeered Boyle Ministries, Inc. For our own use.

Castiel: Buddy Boyle. So, you killed him.

Bartholomew: No. We made him and his colleagues vessels. At least those who didn't go 'pop.'
Dean: So, you're the one. You're the one who Crowley left in charge.
Del: Yeah. What a privilege. Feeding the apes, hosing the floors, washing out the honey buckets, and for zero credit. The boss, MIA. Too important to show for work, to even return my calls. And you know the worst part? I wasn't even allowed to kill anyone. I was told to protect them. I mean, how sick is that? Am I not a young, vital demon with basic demon needs and rights? And when I call Crowley to inform him that I've single-handedly caught the Winchesters, if he even answers my call, think I'll get a thank you? Ha!
Del: Do it. Kill me.

Sam: No, we're saving you for someone else.
Del: Crowley.
Sam: Much worse.
[Linda walks in]
Dean: Do the honors, Mrs. Tran?
Linda: With pleasure.
Del: Hey, lady. I swear. I was just following ord--
[Linda stabs him in the heart]

Linda: Take me to my son.
Castiel: Sorry I created this chaos. Sorry I couldn't do more to fix it. You may have lost the war, Rebecca, but you tried a new way. You have my respect for that.
Kevin: Sam. I know that wasn't you. Go put a blade in that asshat who possessed you and we'll call it square. Guys. Thank you.

Dean: You can thank us when we get you to heaven where you belong. Okay, until then, enjoy your time with your mom. The, uh, uninterrupted, 24/7, no-escape quality time.
Kevin: Dick. Hey, before I go... Will you guys promise me something?
Dean: Yeah.
Sam: Anything.

Kevin: Can you two... Get over it? Dudes, just 'cause you couldn't see me doesn't mean I couldn't see you. The drama, the fighting... It's stupid. My mom's taking home a ghost. You two... You're both still here.

Trivia & References

Dean: Crowley, this is Dean. Call me when you get this.

Sam: Really, Dean?
Dean: What?
Sam: That's your third unanswered voice mail. Did you ever think maybe he's not that into you?

Possibly a reference to the self-help book, He's Just Not That Into You.
Dean and Sam use the aliases "Agents Nicks and McVie" referring to Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac.
Sam: D. Webster? As in like Daniel Webster?

Dean: Well, I know a lame Crowley in-joke when I see one.

The storage lockers were rented under the name "D. Webster." "The Devil and Daniel Webster" is a 1937 short story by Stephen Vincent Benét. It is a retelling of the story of Faust in which a farmer sells his soul to the devil and is defended by Daniel Webster. The real Daniel Webster was a famous 19th century orator and senator.
Dean: All right, why don't you take Corridor Q? I'll go with Del the Funky Homosapien.
A reference to underground hip-hop artist Del the Funky Homosapien.
Bartholomew: I knew you'd be an asset. No one's as motivated as you to take him down. I've had my hands so full with the factions, it's distracted me from the real goal. But with you by my side -- the new boss and the ultimate rebel working together -- think of the message that would send to would-be dissidents. They'd finally understand that resistance is futile. Think of the bloodshed we could avert... what a united angelkind could accomplish in Heaven... elsewhere.
"Resistance is futile" is a line famously uttered by the Borg in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
