Synopsis

Dean checks in with Frank Devereaux and learns that Dick Roman has a lot of new projects overseas, as well as a new Biggerson's in Butte, Montana. He's more concerned about Bobby's Numbers, but Frank doesn't have any progress on what Dick is doing with the field in Wisconsin. Dean's frustrated, and Sam is sleep deprived because of the disruptive hallucinations of Lucifer he has been having. They decide to take a case a few hours away in Portland, Oregon, where a ballerina named Irina danced herself to death to Swan Lake.

When Sam and Dean arrive at the Portland Police Department, they ask for the crime scene photos. What they see, Irina's feet blown off and her ballet slippers sitting pristine next to her, make them think that this is a case for them. They request the slippers from the officer in the evidence room, but they're missing. The officer tells them that his daughter Tracy, a ballerina, must have grabbed them, and Sam and Dean run for the girl's bathroom. They arrive in time to see the slippers force Tracy to her feet and spin her in a circle, so they grab her and Dean pulls the slippers off her feet before she is injured. Sam, now sure that the slippers are cursed, is careful not to touch them, but when they're in their Pontiac Firebird the shoes somehow move from the trunk to the back seat. Sam comments that the shoes appear to be Dean's size, and Dean admits that he suddenly has a strong urge to dance ballet.

They head into the shop that sold the slippers, Out With The Old, and demand to know where the shopkeeper got them. He tells them that his mother kept the slippers in a special box, which turns out to be a curse box. Sam quickly puts them back inside it before Dean can put the slippers on his feet. They then flash their fake FBI badges and ask the shopkeeper, Scott Freeman, where his mother got the slippers. He doesn't know, but they were with a lot of other items, all in specially crafted boxes. After his mother passed away, he wanted to get rid of all the strange items she'd been collecting.

Trivia & References

"Out With The Old" is the first part of a saying, "Out with the old, and in with the new."
The cursed ballet slippers is a reference to the Hans Christian Anderson story The Red Shoes, in which a vain girl's shoes are cursed to make her dance continuously, until she has her feet cut off. Even then, the shoes continue to haunt her until she prays for mercy.
Black Swan is a 2010 psychological thriller by Darren Aronofsky about ballet dancers competing for the role of the White Swan and the Black Swan in Swan Lake. Dean also refers to Prince Siegfried, who is the lead male ballet dancer role. Dean's comment about "tutu on tutu action" refers to the lesbian sex scene in the movie.
Dean: I hear they have good coffee in Portland.

Sam: Dude, that's Seattle.

Seattle, Washington is the coffee capital of the world, and the city of origin of the Starbucks franchise.
The police station bathroom in which the girl finds the ballet shoes is almost identical to the police station bathroom used in 2.07 The Usual Suspects.
Sam: Geez! You okay there, Baryshnikov?

Dean: Yeah. Yeah, I'm "pas de done."

Mikhail Baryshnikov is a Russian born ballet dancer who defected to Canada in 1974.
Dean's phrase "pas de done" is a play on the ballet term pas de deux.
Sam: Hey, with enough curse mojo you can turn a freaking pencil into a weapon of mass destruction.
In 4.17 It's A Terrible Life, a man committed suicide by stabbing himself in the neck with a pencil.
Sam uses the alias Bruce Hornsby - the name of an American improvisational musician - when reporting of the death of the woman killed by the cursed kettle.
The cursed gramophone was sold to Brenda Gluck, 413 River Street, and a vintage gentlemen's magazine sold to Peter Yankit, 27 Johnson Lane. Gluck may be a reference to Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck, an 18th century opera composer. Yankit is an entrendre for wanking, and Johnson is a slang for penis. The staircase in Brenda's house appears to be the same staircase used in 1.05 Bloody Mary.
Hallucifer's torment of Sam by singing Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" fifty times in a row is a likely reference to Ghost, in which the main character, a ghost, sings "Henry the 8th" over and over to convince a medium to do what he wants her to do.
Frank mentions that a new Biggerson's Restaurant has opened in Butte, Montanta. Frank assumes it is Leviathans who have opened it.

The woman who dies after drinking boiling water from the cursed kettle, also has some Biggerson's coupons on her counter.

Butte was previously mentioned in 7.14 Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie.
Sam orders a "triple red eye" coffee from the barista. Young Sam ordered the same thing in 7.03 The Girl Next Door.

This is probably a reference to artist C.M. Coolidge's famous series of oil paintings showing dogs playing poker.

Frank tells Dean that Dick Roman is funding an archaeological dig, a factory in Saudi Arabia and a fishery in Jakarta.
A sign in the police station says "Abusive language will not be tolerated & will be prosecuted by law".
Joyce & George drove a BMW 320i with the number plate YGA 6L8.
Dean does his research at the Lampliter Gallery Cafe.
Before George, Joyce had 4 assistants, all of whom she ate after they displeased her.
Joyce's coffee order was for a "Grande non-fat no-whip white mocha, one pump sugar-free, double-shot espresso".
Joyce killed the antique store owner and made it look like a car accident (driving off a cliff).
She also killed Mr Marshall, the hardware store owner, and told George to make it look like he had fallen asleep in bed while smoking a cigar and burned to death.
When Dean tells Sam about Bicklebee Realty he says "There's this new company, never even tasted real estate..." but on their website on the laptop screen in front of him it clearly says "With over 20 years experience in the Real Estate Market, I'm one of Portland's top realtors. Sam and Dean drive a Chevrolet pickup (number plate BVO 570) in this episode - possibly a reference to the still on lockdown Impala.
The coffee shop George go to is called Mojo Java. The power of cursed objects is referred to as "mojo" several times by both Sam and Dean.
"Bad Moon Rising" which plays in this episode as Sam and Dean arrive at Frank's trailer, was also played in 1.22 Devil's Trap as the Impala gets hit by a demon-driven semi-truck. Earlier in this episode, Sam fell asleep at the wheel and nearly had another semi accident. This episode ends much like the other, with the song playing and a lot of blood, making it appear as though the characters are dead, although this is neither confirmed nor denied in the episode.
