Synopsis

Dean is having a case of cabin fever and he claimed that he had washed every car in the Bunker twice. Sam tells him that he hasn’t make any progress in his search about the Darkness. When Sam tells Dean that there might be a case, Dean tells him that he could fill him with the details on their way there.

Sam tells Dean about a possible case in Quaker Valley, Oregon. The local sheriff, Dwayne Markham was found in the woods with his body mauled, so the local officials categorized it as animal attack. Sam believes it might be a werewolf attack, but they both agreed that it was thin but continue on to Oregon anyway. Castiel calls telling Sam and Dean that he couldn’t find anything related to the case they were handling, the boys insist that Cass’ only job right now is to focus to help himself get better, with Sam offering up his room and Netflix to Cass to keep him distracted.

Dean pulled over to a roadhouse with Sam’s objection. Prompting Dean to remind him that it's the same roadhouse where they had a good time with a hunter by the name of Heather after a wendigo case a few years back. Sam tells Dean to have fun, but he is going to find a diner and do some research on the case.

As the night changed into the dawn, Dean wobbles out of the roadhouse and gets inside the Impala to take a quick nap, muttering to himself that “Mistakes were made” as he closed his eyes. He's soon startled by a woman’s voice asking, “Who are you?” from the backseat. As Dean recovering from his shock, Sam’s voice was heard from the back seat. Explaining to the girl that it was his brother. Dean leaves the car to give Sam and Heather some privacy.

AS they get back on the road, Dean begins teasing Sam for his one night stand and puts a tape in the deck and Bob Seger’s "Night Moves" starts playing, and soon the two begin singing along to the song. The boys share their thoughts about settling down, of which they have a very different opinions. While Dean thinks one night stands are all they can have, and are lucky to get. Sam still believe that there’s a still a chance for them to have something more meaningful. Believing Sam to be exhausted, Dean tells him to get in the back and get some rest.

Suddenly Sam woken up to Judy Collin’s "Someday Soon", asking Dean what he's listening to, only to find the younger version of John Winchester in the driver's seat. Sam believing he's having another vision, he’s only here to deliver a message. That the Darkness is coming and only the boys could stop it. Sam insisted that there should be a way to stop The Darkness and John needed to tell him, but John only answered, “God helps those who help themselves.” Sam asked John one last question before he woke up, “Who are you?”

Sam wakes up in the backseat and is offered a can of beer from Dean, who tells Sam that he was singing the song that their mom loved in his sleep. Sam then proceeds to tell Dean about his dream or vision and the message that it brought. Sam tells Dean that the message might be from God, but Dean doesn’t believe him. But Sam tells him that he had his first vision after praying in the hospital, coming clean that he got infected by rabids during that time. However, Dean is still convinced that whatever Sam saw was only a fever dream, a side effect of the infection. Dean tells Sam that he also still dreams about their Dad all the time, but Sam isn’t convinced and still believes that God or something else is trying to send them a message. Dean tells Sam that whatever it is, the Darkness is on them and they are the ones who need to fix this, and agreed to focus on the case they are working on.

The boys finally reached their destination. Dean had seen the corpse and the body was totally mauled and the heart was also missing. Dean coined the term were-pyre to describe the creature that attacked the sheriff. Sam had a copy of the report from the Sheriff replacement, Deputy Donelly. When the deputy suddenly greeted them. He recommended a motel and a restaurant that served the best steak in the steak.

The boy headed to Aunt Mel’s. Dean was pissed because they had to valet park. He reluctantly gave the key to Jessie, the valet. Jessie with an excited face drove away and called her friend to pick her up. The girls then drove around town. They were just having fun when Jesse’s phone rang and her boss asked her to come back soon. Jesse’s friend couldn’t find her purse and was forced to leave the car without it.

Dean dropped Sam at the Sheriff house to ask if the wife had seen anything. He went back to the woods where the body was found because he felt that something was not right with the crime scene photos. Castiel called when Dean was observing the scene. Cass found a creature in the lore that matched the boys’ findings. Dean insisted on calling it the were-pyre. But Cass didn’t get it and proceeded on explaining the lore. The creature was called a Whisper in the lore. Cass told Dean that silver would work but it was better to decapitate it just to be sure. Dean reported his findings. The crime scene was totally staged. Cass continued explaining the creature while the deputy stopped by. The deputy then attacked Dean. Cass who was totally oblivious of what was going on, continued talking. Only to find that some of the details didn’t match a Whisper characteristic, and agreed to call it the were-pyre. With all the noise Dean and The Deputy making outside, Cass stopped explaining and kept calling Dean because something was clearly going on. Dean ended up decapitating the deputy’s head but weirdly, the head was still alive. Dean decided to put the head in the cooler box.

Dean took a picture of the were-pyre’s teeth to Cass so he could check it. He then found missed calls from Sam and called him back immediately. Sam said that he got jumped and he managed to escape, taking the unconscious Mrs. Markham with him. Dean went to pick Sam up. A machete he used previously, fell under the front seat. Cass called right after Dean picked Sam and Mrs. Markham up. Cass informed them that the creature was a ghoul and vampire-like creature called Nachzehrer. Dean coined another new term, a Ghoul-pyre. Cass continued to explain their characteristic and told the boys the only way to get rid of them is to remind them that they were dead by using the Charon’s Obol. A Charon’s Obol is a coin in ancient Greek mythology that was put inside the mouth of the dead people so the dead could use it as a currency to be taken across the river to the underworld. So the boys need to put a copper coin inside the Nachzehrer mouth and sever their head. If they managed to kill the alpha, the pack will turn into the human form. The boys needed to find pennies because it was the only coins that were made of copper. Sam went inside a mini market. Mrs. Markham became conscious and Dean tried to explain every thing to her. She opened the lid of the cooler box because the noise inside and was shocked to see an animated head inside. Dean moved the box to the trunk. Mrs. Markham then said things about family and told Dean if he agreed that we do everything for our family. She then attacked Dean. The deputy had turned her and her kids but her husband didn’t want to be turned that was why he was killed. Mrs. Markham went back to the woods to put the deputy’s head and body together. The deputy turned out to be an alpha. He was living a quiet life but since The Darkness came, he started to build up an army. He claimed that The Darkness would come for every one. He then revealed to Dean that he got Sam heading to a trap and he would turn Sam. Dean managed to find the hairpin that Piper (the girl Sam had a one night stand with) and got himself unlocked. He then grabbed the alpha who was driving and they crashed into the road block.

Dean also managed to find a purse that Jessie’s friend left earlier. The purse was filled with pennies and next to it was a machete that he had used earlier. After a vigorous fight, Dean managed to killed the alpha. Mrs. Markham was turned back to her human form. Dean took a look at how battered the Impala was and whisper “Oh, Baby. I'm so sorry.” And stroking her gently.

Mrs. Markham was conscious and asked Dean to help her get to her children. Dean figured that Sam might also be there agreed to it. Dean tried to turn on the car but the engine won’t started. After a few cough, the engine was back on. A very grateful Dean blew a kiss to the car.

They arrived at the Nachzehrer’s former nest. All the Nachzehrers had changed back to their human form. Dean helped the limping Sam got into car. They discussed of how the monsters were also freaked out by The Darkness. Dean told Sam that they’re gonna end this thing now which Sam replied by asking if they could do it starting tomorrow instead. Dean told Sam, “Let’s go home.” and Sam, pounding the dashboard with apparent affection answered. “We are home.”

Dean started the engine again, with the whistle and the rumbling of the engine, he said, “There’s my girl.” He turned up the volume and Night Moves started to play as the boys went back to the bunker.

Quotes

Dean: Where's the beer?

Sam: Under the smoothies.

Dean: Where's the rest of the beer?
Dean: Mistakes were made, mm-hmm.
Dean: Piper? That's awesome. Heather. One-night wonders, man. Shoot, we're lucky we still get that at all.
Sam: Hey Dean, um. You said when you saw the Darkness you weren't sure if it was the real thing or a vision, right? I think I've been having visions too, lately. It's just images, I mean more of a feeling, really. But I just had one right now, and-and Dad was in it, but it wasn't Dad like the Dad I grew up with, it was Dad when he was our age, and I guess it wasn't really Dad just someone pretending to be Dad.

Dean: Okay, what makes you say that.

Sam: For starters, he told me everything I wanted to hear.
Dean: As far as Dad goes, I dream about Dad all the time.

Sam: You do?
Dean: 'Course I do. It's usually the same one too, we're all in the car I'm sitting in the driver's seat and Dad's sitting shotgun. But there aren't any shotguns, and there's no monsters, no hunting, there's none of that. It's just he's teaching me how to drive, and I'm not little like I was when actually taught me how to drive, I'm sixteen and he's helping me get my learner's permit. Of course you're in the back seat just begging to take a turn, we pull up to the house -- the family house. I park in the driveway, and he looks over and he says, 'perfect landing son.' I have that dream every couple of months, it's kinda comforting actually.
Sam: I always dream about Mom, usually the same kind of thing though.
Dean: Normal life?

Sam: Yeah. Normal life.
Dean: Hey Cass, tell me you got something that doesn't involve chicks in prison.

Sam: Bet you never thought you'd say that out loud.
Castiel: It's a Nachzehrer.
Sam: Come again?
Castiel: A Ghoul and Vampire-like creature.

Dean: A Ghoul-pyre! Huh?
Dean: Oh Baby, I'm so sorry.
Sam: So it was Deputy Dumbass, huh?
Dean: Yeah, Deputy Dumbass. You know he was trying to build an army?
Sam: Dean even the monsters are scared.
Dean: Let 'em be. You and me, we're stopping this now.
Dean: Okay mom, let's go home.

[Sam taps on the dash]

Sam: You know what? We are home.
