Synopsis

A demon, Dar, is being tortured. She tells her torturer that he has lost his soul and any ethics he had. Her tormentor is Sam Winchester, trying to find Dean and Crowley.

Back at the bunker, Sam keeps researching — looking for signs of demonic activity by tracking weather events, cattle deaths, and crop failures, and by calling other hunters. He wanders into Dean's bedroom and looks at the only clue he has, a note left presumably by Dean that reads, "Sammy let me go."

Sam finds what he think may be a clue — a man called Drew Neely who had killed his family and disappeared three years earlier has been found dead. Sam theorizes that Neely was possessed by a demon, who may have possessed Dean and left Neely's body to die. Sam calls to share the news with Castiel, who is anxious for news of Dean. Picking up that Cas is seriously unwell, Sam backtracks and tells him not to worry, that the clue probably isn't anything.

At a bar called the Black Spur, Dean is singing karaoke—badly—and later has sex with a waitress called Anne Marie. He warns her not to get attached as he's just passing through. Crowley interrupts them, and he and Dean go to play foosball. Later, Dean notices a guy harassing Anne Marie, follows him outside, and delivers a severe beating to him in front of a shocked Anne Marie.

Hannah visits Castiel. She tells him that Heaven is being rebuilt; Metatron is in jail, and reconciliation amongst the angels is proceeding. However, some angels remain on Earth, and recently two of them — Daniel and Adina — killed an angel who tried to get them to return to Heaven. Hannah asks for Castiel's help in finding them, and he agrees.

In Wisconsin, Sam is investigating Drew Neely's death. When the police show him the security footage from the Gas-N-Sip, Sam recognizes Dean. In the footage, Dean is reading a porn magazine when Drew draws a blade and attacks him. Dean fights back and kills him, stabbing him repeatedly with the First Blade. Sam believes that his suspicion that a demon is possessing Dean has been confirmed when Dean's eyes flash black on the tape. He travels to the store himself, where the clerk gives him Neely's phone.

At the Black Spur, one of Abaddon's demonic followers attacks Dean, who fights and kills him.

Sam finds a text on Neely's phone that had alerted the demon to Dean's presence there, and realizes that the demon had also been an Abaddon loyalist. He calls the number, and Crowley answers, revealing that Crowley has been sending Abaddon loyalists after Dean. Sam vows to save Dean or die trying. Crowley taunts him, saying he's jealous that Crowley is Dean's best friend now, and informs him that Dean is not possessed, but that the Mark of Cain has twisted his soul into something demonic.

Sam traces Crowley's location via an app, a move which Crowley has anticipated. Crowley tells Dean of his talk with Sam and that Sam is coming, to convince him that it is time to leave, as he wants Dean to come with him to Hell and rule alongside him. He explains that he had been sending demons after Dean because he knows that Dean needs to kill to 'feed' the Mark of Cain. He leaves after telling Dean to choose whether to come with him and rule Hell, or not.

During the night, Dean drinks and sings karaoke — even worse than before — and drinks a lot more, even shoving a man off the stage when the man tries to usher him away. Later, when he's in bed, Anne Marie brings him some water. He proposes that they take off together, but she says that when she saw him beat her ex, she realized he wasn't a good man. Dean is cruel to her, and she leaves, sadly commenting that she knows she is so damaged she'll probably think that she deserved it.

Hannah and Cas travel to find the two rogue angels. Hannah confronts Cas about his fading grace, but he angrily rebuts the implication that another angel die for him to get more. They find Daniel and Adina, who want to stay on Earth, having found much there they enjoy. Hannah persists — insisting that they must return to Heaven; Heaven needs rules to operate. A fight ensues, during which Castiel has to kill Daniel to save Hannah. Adina escapes. Hannah continues to insist to Castiel that Heaven needs rules, but Cas says that the chaos on Earth can produce good things — art, hope, dreams, love — that Hannah points out are "human things."

On his way to the Black Spur, Sam's car breaks down. A man, Cole, stops to help, but reveals he rigged Sam's car to stop, and kidnaps him. In a barn, he prepares to torture Sam for Dean's location, alluding to some connection to Dean hinted to earlier in the episode, which has lead to him now wanting to kill Dean. He uses Sam's phone to call Dean, who answers as he is driving. Cole demands Dean meet him or he will kill Sam. However, while Dean plans to find and kill Cole one day, he is perfectly willing to let Sam die since he had already told Sam not to come looking for him. Dean says that whatever trouble Sam is in now is his own problem. Dean ends the call by hanging up on Cole.

Sam: He's not your pet.
Crowley: My pet? He's my best friend, my partner in crime. They'll write songs about us, graphic novels -- The Misadventures of Growley and Squirrel. Dean Winchester completes me, and that's what makes you lose your chickens.
Dean: Okay, see the deal was we howl at the moon. No time stamp, no expiration date.
Castiel: Perhaps I've been down here with them for too long. There is seemingly nothing but chaos, not all bad comes from it. Art, hope, love, dreams.

Hannah: But those are human things.

Castiel: Yes.
Dean: Now you listen to me; there's no trade, there's no meet up, there's no nothing. Except the 100% guarantee, somewhere down the road I will find you and I will kill you.

Trivia & References

The episode's title could be a reference to the Pearl Jam song "Black," which is about a man lamenting the loss of his girlfriend/significant other. The ideas in the lyrics are somewhat reflected by Crowley's comments during his phone conversation with Sam.
Mickey, the Gas-n-Sip clerk tells Sam that Dean was yelling "Say my name!" as he stabbed the demon. This may be a reference to a quote from Walter White in the Breaking Bad episode of the same name, where he demands a drug dealer "Say my name!" — in this case, the name of his alter ego Heisenberg.
Dean: You lied.

Crowley: Who do you think you are talking to here? Does the Tin Man have a sheet metal willy? Of course I lied.

The Tin Man is a character from the Wizard of Oz. He doesn't obviously have a penis, at least in the movie.
Crowley: We've howled, we've bayed, we-we've done extraordinary things to triplets, all of which have been massively entertaining, I will treasure our Flickr albums forever. But now it's time we accept what we are and go back to work.

A reference to a scene from the 2008 movie Taken where Liam Neeson's character threatens a kidnapper over the phone with the quote "I will find you, and I will kill you.".

Minutiae

On October 6, 2014, the day before season 10 premiered, the CW aired a documentary-style special called A Very Special Supernatural Special looking back at the last 9 seasons of Supernatural in the lead up to the 200th episode. The special was also included on the Season 10 DVD and Blu-ray. You can also watch the special here.
The season 10 title card uses an inverted pentagram. Whereas a normal pentagram, or pentacle can be seen as a symbol of protection, the inverted pentagram signifies the descent of spirit into matter or the carnal and ungodly side of mankind.
Raquel Riskin, who plays the demon Dar, previously played Amber Greer in 5.06 I Believe the Children Are Our Future.
Sam's arm is seen in a sling because Jared injured his shoulder and had to have surgery. It was still healing when filming for the season commenced. The injury occurred while wrestling with Osric Chau at Jus In Bello Italy 2014. Watch video of Osric relating how it happened. The explanation given in the show is that Sam was injured by a demon while he and Cas were searching for clues to Dean's disappearance. Sam wears the sling in the first four episodes of the season. Jared had previously wore a plaster cast on screen in season two for episodes 2.05 Simon Said through to 2.11 Playthings, following an on-set injury to his wrist.
The books Sam is shown to have been researching at the Men of Letters Bunker are titled Demonic Possession, A Practitioner's Guide to Exorcism, and Rituals of Human Possession.
As Sam is reading an article about Drew Neely on his laptop, the name Robert Leader is referenced as one of his relatives. Robert Leader was assistant art director/set designer on Supernatural.
