PROLOGUE

Blackwater Ridge
Lost Creek, Colorado

INT. DARK WOODS - NIGHT

There are dark woods, with glimpses of two tents and a small campfire. Crickets chips in the background. The sound of twigs breaking under the weight of something heavy are audible, accompanied with heavy breathing and low growls. Shadows are visible within the tents.

INT. TENT - NIGHT

Two hands playing a video game fill the screen, clicking rapidly on the button. A YOUNG MAN is shown to be playing it, with another YOUNG MAN in the background behind him, apparently playing the same game.

The second YOUNG MAN, BRAD, glances up.

BRAD
Dude, you're cheating.

FIRST YOUNG MAN, GARY
No, you just suck.

INT. WOODS - NIGHT

View of one tent then rapidly moves to the other. Growling is again audible. Camera focuses on second tent. YOUNG MAN inside, TOMMY, flips his phone around presses a button and holds it up.

INT. SECOND TENT - NIGHT

TOMMY
Hey HALEY, day six, we're somewhere out near Blackwater Ridge.

He is video-recording himself on his phone and we see a shadow pass across the tent wall behind him as he continues speaking.

TOMMY
We're fine, keeping safe, so don't worry. Talk to you tomorrow.

He presses a button and the video stops. He turns the phone around and brings it into his lap.

INT. FIRST TENT - NIGHT

BRAD flips his video game shut and tosses it away, unzipping the tent door.

GARY
Hey where you goin? My moment of victory.

BRAD
Nature calls.

OUTSIDE - NIGHT

BRAD leaves, zips the tent and walks to the edge of the campsite and begins to unzip his pants. Camera lowers to the flames of the campfire.

A crack and a growl sounds from the woods and BRAD jerks his head up to look toward it. Growling and more cracking is heard, and we see brush moving as something moves behind it. BRAD peers toward the sound but sees nothing, so looks down and shakes his head.

BRAD looks up suddenly, a loud growl is heard, he leans forward, looking into the woods. More brush moves. Another growl. BRAD's eyes widen and he screams as there is a fierce growl.

INT. SECOND TENT - NIGHT

TOMMY is laying in his sleeping bag and looks over confused as BRAD screams.

INT. FIRST TENT - NIGHT

GARY still playing his video games looks toward the sound.

GARY
BRAD?

INT. SECOND TENT - NIGHT

TOMMY sits up.

TOMMY
GARY what's going on?

GARY gets up and unzips the tent, looking out cautiously. There is a loud growl and GARY looks up slowly. He scream and is violently jerked from the tent.

INT. SECOND TENT - NIGHT

TOMMY sits up as GARY's screams fade. He pants heavily as he dives to turn off the electric lantern. The tent is dark and he sits back up, looking around as a shadow rapidly circles his tent, panting and growling sounds audible.

TOMMY turns in circles to follow the shadow and he breathes heavily with fright. Then all is silent and TOMMY sits shaking as he listens. A clawed, five fingered hand-shape tears through his tent wall, and TOMMY screams, diving forward away from it. He lands on his back and lies screaming as the camera zooms in on his face and then cuts to black and silence.

INT. GRAVEYARD - DAY

SAM moves though a graveyard, a bouquet of wildflowers in his hand.

SAM
I, uh, you always said roses were--

Close up of the tombstone showing the words JESSICA LEE MOORE, Beloved Daughter, January 24th 1984 ~ november 2nd 2005. Roses border the stone, and a small round picture of JESSICA sits above her name.

SAM
Were lame, so I brought you ah...

ALDEN EHRENREICH

SAM stops speaking. Camera focuses close on JESSICA's picture. SAM struggles to compose himself and bites his lip. Angle shot of him through a metal fence, surrounded by tombstones.

Camera focus on JESSICAS picture again. SAM sighs heavily, breaths deeply and his eyes fill with tears.

SAM
Jess-- oh god.

Shot of JESSICA's tombstone and SAM kneels down, tears in his eyes as he chokes up.

Supervising Producer
PHIL SGRICCIA

SAM shakes his head.

SAM
I should have protected you.

Close up of JESSICA's picture. She is brunette and smiling widely.

SAM
I should have told you the truth.

SAM leans forward and lays the wildflowers at the base of the tombstone. Suddenly a dirt covered hand shoots up through the ground and grips his wrist.

HIGHWAY

INT. IMPALA-DAY

SAM is sleeping with his head against the IMPALA's window and he jerks awake, blinking rapidly. "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner is playing.

MUSIC
Hot blooded, check it and see,

SAM looks confused. DEAN, driving, looks worried but says nothing.

MUSIC
I've got a fever of a hundred and three.

The IMPALA speeds down the road.

MUSIC
Come one Baby, do you do more than dance?

SAM rubs his eyes.

DEAN
You okay?

SAM frowns quickly at DEAN.

SAM
Yeah.

Producer
PETER JOHNSON

DEAN nods.

DEAN
Another nightmare?

Co-Executive Producer
RICHARD HATEM

SAM clears his throat.

Co-Executive Producer

Executive Producer

DEAN your whole life you never once asked me that.

DEAN
Just thought you might want to. Never mind.

Look man, you're worried about me, I get it, and thank you but, I'm perfectly okay.

DEAN
Mmhmm.

SAM
Alright,

Produced by
CYRUS YAVNEH

SAM picks up a map.

SAM
Where are we?

DEAN
We are just outside of Grand Junction.

Created by
ERIC KRIPKE

SAM fold a map in half, focusing on a large red 'X' in permanent marker in the upper left side. Th coordinates 35-111 are written above the 'X'.

SAM
You know what? Maybe we shouldn't have left Stanford so soon.

DEAN
SAM we dug around there for a week, we came up with nothing. If you wanna find the thing that killed JESSICA--

SAM
We gotta find Dad first.

DEAN
Dad disappearing and this thing showing up again after twenty years?

Teleplay by
ERIC KRIPKE

DEAN
It's no coincidence.

Story by
RON MILBAUER

TERRI HUGHES BURTON

DEAN
Dad'll have answers, he'll know what to do.

SAM
It's weird man.

Directed by
DAVID NUTTER

SAM
These coordinates he left us, this Black Water Ridge,

DEAN
Yeah what about it?

SAM
There's nothing there.

The map shows that the red 'X' is over an gray area with ridges for mountains and the words "Lost Creek Wilderness Area" below the words "Black Water Ridge. The black numbers '35-111' are above it.

SAM
It's just -- woods. Why is sending us to the middle of nowhere?

Tires squealing, the IMPALA passes a brown and beige sign that reads "Welcome to LOST CREEK COLORADO National Forest."

RANGER STATION

The IMPALA is parked in front of a log cabin type building. A sign beside the IMPALA reads "RANGER STATION Lost Creek Trail, Lost Creek National Forest.

SAM
So, Black Water Ridge is pretty remote,

INT. RANGER STATION-DAY

SAM
It's cut off by these canyons here.

SAM is walking around a table with a 3D topical map of the area, while DEAN is inspecting a photo on the wall. There is a cluttered desk in the background, and a map on the wall behind it.

SAM
Rough terrain, dense forest.

A close-up of Black Water Ridge is shown.

SAM
Abandoned silver and gold mines all over the place.

DEAN
Dude, check out the size of this freakin' bear.

Close-up of the photo, which shows a huge bear laying on its stomach and a smiling hunter posing behind it. SAM moves to DEAN's side.

SAM
And a dozen or more grizzlies in the area. It's no nature hike that's for sure.

A MAN walks up behind SAM and DEAN.

MAN
You boys aren't planning to go out near Black Water Ridge by any chance?

SAM
Oh no sir, we're Environmental Study majors from UC Boulder. Just workin' on a paper.

DEAN pumps a fist.

DEAN
Recycle man.

MAN
Bull. You're friends with that HALEY-girl, right?

DEAN
Yes. Yes, we are. RANGER-- WILKINSON.

RANGER WILKINSON
Well I will tell you exactly what I told her. Her brother filled out a Back Country permit sayin' he wouldn't be back from Black Water until the 24th. So it's not exactly a 'Missing Persons' now is it.

DEAN shakes his head and mouths 'no'.

RANGER WILKINSON
Tell that girl to quit worryin'. I'm sure her brother's just fine.

DEAN
We will. That HALEY-girl's quite a pistol huh?

RANGER WILKINSON
That is putting it mildly.

DEAN
Actually you know what would help, is if I could show her a copy of that Back Country permit, you know so she can see her brother's return date.

INT. OUTSIDE-DAY

DEAN
Yeah

SAM
What, you cruisin' for a hook-up or something?

DEAN
What do you mean?

SAM
The coordinates point to Black Water Ridge so what are we waiting for? Let's just go find Dad. I mean why even talk to this girl?

DEAN
I don't know, maybe we should know what we're walking into before we actually walk into it.

SAM
What?

DEAN
Well since when are you all shoot first ask questions later anyway?

SAM
Since now.

DEAN
Oh really?

HALEY'S HOUSE

INT. AT HALEY'S-DAY

DEAN knocks on a door. A pretty dark haired girl opens it.

DEAN
You must be HALEY COLLINS. I'm DEAN this is SAM, we're uh we're Rangers with the Park Service. RANGER WILKINSON sent us over. We wanted to ask you some questions about your brother TOMMY?

HALEY
Lemme see some ID.

DEAN
Ah, here you go.

DEAN holds his ID up to the screen door.

HALEY
Come on in.

DEAN
Thanks.

HALEY sees the IMPALA behind them and looks surprised.

HALEY
That yours?

DEAN
Yeah.

HALEY
Nice car.

DEAN mouths 'Oh man' to SAM as he and SAM follow HALEY into the house. SAM rolls his eyes.

SAM
So if TOMMY's not due back for a while, how do you know something's wrong?

SAM and DEAN are standing the dining room as HALEY brings bowls of food to the table, where a young TEENAGE BOY, BEN, is sitting.

HALEY
He checks in everyday by cell. He emails photos, stupid little videos, but we haven't heard anything in over three days now.

SAM
Well maybe he can't get cell reception.

HALEY
He's got a satellite phone too.

DEAN
Could it be he's just havin' fun and forgot to check in?

BEN
He wouldn't do that.

HALEY
Our parents are gone. It's just my two brother's and me. We all keep pretty close tabs on each other.

SAM
Can I see the pictures he sent you?

HALEY
Yeah.

HALEY pulls up some picture on a laptop.

HALEY
That's TOMMY.

HALEY clicks on another photo and then on a video.

VIDEO
Hey HALEY, day six, still out near BLack Water Ridge. We're fine, keeping safe, so don't worry okay? Talk to you tomorrow.

DEAN
Well, we'll find your brother. We're heading out to Black Water Ridge first thing.

HALEY
Then maybe I'll see you there. Look, I can't sit around here anymore. So I hired a guide. I'm heading out in the morning and I'm gonna find TOMMY myself.

DEAN
I think I know how you feel.

SAM
Hey, you mind forwarding these to me?

HALEY
Sure.

BAR

INT. BAR-NIGHT

A game of pool is going, loud music is heard. A waitress carried a tray with beer glasses across the room.

SAM
So, Black Water Ridge doesn't get a lot of traffic.

SAM and DEAN are sitting at a table with SAM's leather bookbag

SAM
Local campers mostly. But still, this past April two hikers went missing out there, they were never found.

DEAN
Any before that?

SAM opens a leather folder and takes out a photocopy of an old newspaper.

SAM
Yeah. In 1982, eight different people all vanished in the same year. Authorities said it was a grizzly attack. And again in 1959 and again before that in 1936.

SAM takes his laptop out of his bag and opens it to the video HALEY forwarded him.

SAM
Every 23 years. Just like clockwork. Okay, watch this. Here's a clincher. I downloaded that guy TOMMY's video to the laptop. Check this out.

SAM fast-forwards through the video until he reaches the part where a shadow crosses the tent wall behind TOMMY. SAM plays it in slow motion.

DEAN
Do it again?

SAM plays the video again, slowing it down on the shadow part.

SAM
That's three frames. That's a fraction of a second. What ever that thing is, it can move.

SAM goes through the three frames again. DEAN hits SAM's arm.

DEAN
Told you something weird was going on.

SAM closes the laptop.

SAM
Yeah. I got one more thing. In '59, one camper survived the supposed grizzly attack. Just a kid. Barely crawled out of the woods alive.

DEAN
Is there a name?

SURVIVOR

INT. SURVIVOR'S HOUSE- NIGHT

OLD MAN, MR. SHAW
Look Ranger, I don't know why you're asking me about this. It's public record. I was a kid. My parents got mauled by a--

SAM
Grizzly? That's what attacked them?

MR. SHAW hesitates then nods.

DEAN
The other people who went missing that year? Those bear attacks too? What about all the people that went missing this year? Same thing? If we knew what we were dealing with, we might be able to stop it.

MR. SHAW
I seriously doubt that. Anyways, I don't see what difference it would make. You wouldn't believe me. Nobody ever did.

SAM
MR. SHAW, what did you see?

MR. SHAW
Nothing. It moved too fast to see. It hid too well. I heard it though. A roar. Like no man or animal I ever heard.

SAM
It came at night.

MR. SHAW nods.

SAM
Got inside your tent.

MR. SHAW
It got inside our cabin! I was sleepin' in front of the fireplace when it came in. It didn't smash a window or break the door. It unlocked it. You know of a bear that could do somethin' like that? i didn't even wake up 'til I heard my parents screamin'.

SAM
It killed them.

MR. SHAW
Dragged em off into the night. Why it left me alive, been askin' myself that ever since. Did leave me this though.

MR. SHAW moves his collar to the side and exposes four ugly raised scars, the longest about 6 inches long, about an inch wide.

MR. SHAW
There's somethin' evil in those woods. It was some sort of a demon.
