During Top Notch Wrestling's stop for their show in Brimson, Missouri, Shawn has a match with Larry "The Hangman" Lee. During the match, Larry performs his finisher by placing a noose around Shawn's neck. Shawn panics as the noose tightens a little too much as he's hoisted up into the air.

After the match, Shawn confronts Larry at his locker, telling him that he almost died in the ring. Gunnar Lawless appears to defuse the argument, and Shawn scoffs, pointing out that the "old-timers" like to stick together. After warning Gunnar to keep Larry "on a leash", he leaves the locker room.

A few nights later, before Lawless' match with Hellrazor, Shawn spots Duke and Gunnar talking quietly and exchanging something. Shawn assumes that Duke is Gunnar's drug dealer. Later that night, Shawn is drinking heavily at the local bar. When he goes to order more alcohol, Gunnar attempts to stop him. Irritated, Shawn confronts him about an incident at their Fort Worth stop where Gunnar got him kicked off the card for not intentionally losing the match to another wrestler by the name of Crazy D. Shawn accuses Gunnar of just being worried that he'd steal his thunder. Gunnar quips back that he has no worries about that. All of a sudden, Shawn punches Gunnar who falls to the floor. Just as their promoter Rio appears, Shawn voices his assumption that Gunnar is doing drugs. Gunnar insists that Shawn is lying, but Rio just breaks the men apart and tells them to rest and sober up.

During the night, Shawn's motel room is broken into by Gunnar who kidnaps him for Duke—who is actually his crossroads demon. Gunnar ties Shawn to a chair and Shawn tries to apologize to him and begs him not to hurt him. Duke then enters the room, flashing his red demon eyes. Duke offers to give Harley whatever he wants in return for his soul and assassination requests from time to time. Shawn refuses the offer—surmising that, since there is a Hell, there's a Heaven he could still get into too. After severing one of Shawn's Achilles tendons, Duke holds his knife out and orders a reluctant Gunnar to kill him.
