A Fic header is the information included at the beginning of a piece of fanfiction. Variations may also be found on other types of fanworks. The header provides information in summary, which is mean to be a useful guide to readers. In addition to the story title and author, the header may also contain:

  • Word Count
  • Rating: Systems of ratings vary, but a commonly used standard is the MPAA system used by the Motion Pictures of America which is G, PG, PG13, R, NC17
  • Pairings: Pairings relates to characters in a sexual or romantic relationship whether Het or Slash. In a Gen fic, the major characters may be listed
  • Fic Warning: The intention of warnings is to list story elements that may cause upset or just not appeal to certain reader. Often they end up being an advertisement for what sexual kinks are involved! Spoilers may also be warned for.
  • Disclaimers: Fanfic will often include a disclaimer acknowledging the original creators of the text on which a story is based. They may be phrased in semi-legal tomes - "The author acknowledges that Eric Kripke and Warner Brothers are the rightful owners of these characters and settings. No profit is made from this work", to the less serious "Not mine - I'm just playing with them"
