Detective Sutton is a detective with the police department in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. In 2008, Detective Sutton met Sam and Dean — who he knew by their aliases of FBI Agents Bonham and Watts — as he was investigating the murders of several women. The killer was never caught, and the case went cold.

When women begin turning up murdered in the same manner as the ones 4 years previous in Coeur d'Alene, Detective Sutton is again put on the case. He is called out to the scene of the murder of a white woman in her 30s at the Henley Auto-Wash. He's not surprised to see "Agents Bonham and Watts" there again and comments that the case has been reopened. Dean asks him if they have any suspects, but Sutton responds that the killer had been thorough and hadn't left much identifying evidence behind. Dean thanks him and Detective Sutton leaves him and Sam to their investigation of the crime scene.
