Synopsis

The boys arrive at Harvelle's Roadhouse to find Ellen and Jo in a heated argument. Jo has discovered a potential case in Philadelphia, and Ellen refuses to let her leave the Roadhouse to become a hunter. Jo gives the case to the Winchesters, in which blonde girls in an apartment building are disappearing. The boys discover ectoplasm in the apartment of the latest victim, a sign of strong supernatural manifestation. As they search the building they run into Jo who has followed them from the Roadhouse. Jo explains that Ash has laid a false trail so that Ellen won’t know where she is.

With Sam covering part of the building, Jo and Dean scan the other part with EMF meters looking for supernatural activity. They argue as Dean criticizes her for pursuing hunting when she has other options in her life. Jo’s EMF meter starts registering activity, and within a wall vent they find a clump of hair from one of the victims. Unknown to them, at the same time another woman is abducted.

The next morning, while researching the case, Jo shares with Dean that the reason she hunts is because it makes her feel connected to her father. They discover that the apartment building was erected over the place Dr. H.H. Holmes, America’s first serial killer, was executed and that he may be holding his latest victim in a hidden room.

While searching for the hidden room, Jo is captured by the spirit of H.H. Holmes. As Sam and Dean try to work out where Jo is being held, Ellen calls, having worked out that Jo is in Philadelphia with them. Dean confesses to her that Jo has been kidnapped and she declares she is catching the first plane there.

Sam works out that the spirit may be holding his victims in an old sewer system beneath the apartment building. Jo is indeed being held there, along with the previous victim Teresa. She manages to hold to spirit at bay with her father’s iron blade until Sam and Dean discover an entrance and rescue them both. In order to trap the spirit, Jo acts as bait to draw him out. When Dr. H.H. Holmes reappears, a contraption releases salt to line the perimeter of the underground chamber, trapping him inside it. As an added precaution, Dean uses cement to seal the chamber, and H.H. Holmes in it.

Ellen catches up with the boys and Jo, and there is a long uncomfortable drive back to the Roadhouse. Angry at the danger the boys put Jo in, Ellen reveals to Jo that her father was killed while on a hunt with John Winchester.

Quotes

Ellen: You know what, you've had worse ideas than that recently. Hey, you don't wanna stay, don't stay. Go back to school.

Jo: I didn't belong there! I was a freak with a knife collection.
Ellen: Yeah, and getting yourself killed on some dusty back road, that's where you belong?! Guys, bad time.
Sam: Yes, ma'am.

Dean: Yeah, we rarely drink before ten anyway.
Jo: So. You gonna buy me dinner?

Dean: What are you talking about?
Jo: It's just if you're gonna ride me this close it's only decent you buy me dinner.

Dean: Oh, that's hilarious. You know, it's bad enough I lied to your mom, but if you think I'm letting you out of my sight... I don't know if you've noticed, but you're kind of the spirit's type.
Jo: You know, I've had it up to here with your crap.

Dean: Excuse me?
Jo: Your chauvinist crap. You think women can't do the job.

Dean: Sweetheart, this ain't gender studies. Women can do the job fine. Amateurs can't. You have no experience. What you do have is a bunch of half-baked romantic notions that some barflies put in your head.
Dean: Mazel Tov. You just found your first spirit.
Jo: What do you.. what do you remember about your dad? I mean, what's the first thing that pops into your head? Come on, tell me.

Dean: I was six or seven, and uh, he took me shooting for the first time. You know, balls on a fence, that kind of thing. I bulls-eyed every one of 'em. He gave me this smile, like... I don't know.

Jo: He must have been proud.
Jo: I was still in pigtails when my Dad died, but I remember him coming home from a hunt. He'd burst through that door like, like Steve McQueen or something. And he'd sweep me up in his arms, and I'd breathe in that old leather jacket of his. And my mom, who was sour and pissed from the minute he left, she started smiling again. And we were... we were a family. You wanna know why I want to do the job? For him. It's my way of being close to him. Now tell me what's wrong with that.
Jo: Thanks, Ash. And if you breathe a word of this to my mom... That's right. I will. With pliers. Okay. Moyamensing prison. Built in 1835, torn down in 1963. And get this. They used to execute people by hanging them in the empty field next door.
Sam: Holmes built an apartment building in Chicago. He called it the Murder Castle. The whole place was a death factory, they had, uh, trap doors, acid vats, quick line pits... he built these secret chambers inside the walls. He'd lock his victims in, keep them alive for days. Some he'd suffocate, others he'd let starve to death.
[Jo squeezes past Dean]

Dean: What are you- Ugh. Shoulda cleaned the pipes.
Jo: What?
Dean: I, uh, I wish the pipes were cleaner.

Jo: Shut up. I can fit in there.
Jo: Scream all you want, you dick, but there's no way you're stepping over that salt!
Jo: Dean. It turns out my Dad had a partner on his last hunt. Funny, he usually worked alone; this guy did too, but... I guess my father figured he could trust him. Mistake. Guy screwed up, got my Dad killed.

Dean: What does this have to do with—
Jo: It was your father, Dean.
Dean: What?
Jo: Why do you think John never came back? Never told you about us? Because he couldn't look my mom in the eye after that, that's why.
Dean: Jo.

Jo: Just... just get out of here. Please, just leave.

Trivia & References

The episode is named after a play by French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre, called Huis Clos (translating to "No Exit"). The best know line from this play is "Hell… is other people." In the play, three people are locked in a windowless room expecting to be tortured. No one arrives, but by probing each other's sins, dark secrets and thoughts they torture each other.
Dean: Young girl's been kidnapped by an evil cult.

Sam: Yeah? Girl got a name?
Dean: Katie Holmes.
Sam: That's funny. And for you, so bitchy.

When Katie Holmes started showing interest in boyfriend Tom Cruise's religion, Scientology, it was negatively noted by many. Some suggested she had been coerced or "brainwashed" into it.
Dean: That's ectoplasm. Well, Sam, I think I know what we're dealing with here. It's the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
The Stay Puft Marsmallow Man was the mascot of the fictitious Stay Puft Corporation in the movie Ghosbusters.
Dean says "Mazel Tov" to Jo, in response to the discovery of a hidden vent. Alona Tal, the actress who plays Jo, is Israeli.
When Sam is researching H.H. Holmes, we see an old photo of a dead woman. This is in fact a photo of one of Jack the Ripper's victims, Elizabeth Stride, not one of Holmes'.
Jo: I’m here to rescue you.
Jo's comment to Teresa is a direct quote from Luke to Leia in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.
The scene where Jo talks to Teresa through her cell door is reminiscent of a scene in the 1997 film Kiss the Girls where Dr. Kate McTiernan wakes up after being kidnapped from her home to find herself trapped in an underground cell and calls through her cell door for help, a cry that is responded to by other imprisoned women.
Sam, Dean, and Jo sealing up H.H. Holmes' ghost underground with concrete mirrors his real life counterpart. Before his execution, Holmes specified that his casket be filled with concrete in order to deter any would-be grave robbers. Sam makes mention of this while discussing how difficult it will be to get rid of Holmes' ghost.
